Republicans also hosting rally at headquarters

Three candidate forums will be hosted next week for voters wanting to learn more about those running for local office in the July 15 primary.

The Fayette County Branch of the NAACP is hosting a forum on Monday, July 7, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Sams Auditorium, 205 LaFayette Avenue in Fayetteville. Candidates running in the July 15th general primary for probate judge, county commission, school board, tax commissioner, state house and senate and public service commissioner are invited to participate.

Candidates will have the opportunity to greet constituents, present their platform and respond to questions and concerns from the voters.

The Fayette County Republican Party also will holding two more candidate forums: one for school board candidates at the Gathering Place in Peachtree City on Tuesday, July 8 from 7-9 p.m. and another forum for the candidates for sheriff, probate judge, and district attorney at the Fayetteville Library on Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 7-8:45 p.m.

Questions can be submitted at the beginning of the program to be asked of the candidates.

The Republican Party is also inviting the public to “an old-fashioned political rally” Saturday, July 12 in the parking lot behind the Party Headquarters at 111 South Glynn Street. This lot is at the corner of Ga. Highway 54 and South Glynn Street across from the county’s administrative complex.

The candidates will attend and there will be balloons, hot dogs, sodas, and much more. Interested persons can stop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., organizers said.

Golly, who needs the Citizen when you can attend a Republican party candidate forum where questions are carefully scrutinized in advance and "sanitized for your protection"?

I'm beginning to think that there is some method to the Republican Madness here.

By deliberately avoiding questions and keeping voters in the dark, they hope to drive down interest in political races and discourage people from showing up at the polls.

Then the hardcore republican't faithful can show up and vote their candidates, and easily install a slate of candidates with a paltry 8 to 10 percent of the voting populace.
