AN EDITORIAL OPINION — Disrespecting our Citizen readers and voters

AN OPINION

Click here to go to the forum.

The four sheriff candidates, four (see update below) board of education candidates and the district attorney of this judicial circuit all have refused even to answer The Citizen’s tough questions for our online political forum.

DA Ballard says, “I don’t blog.”

The sheriff candidates — whom we once thought were strong men ready for a demanding job answerable to the public — banded together to say, “We believe that participating in a forum of this type will ... be unproductive ... and would consume an enormous amount of time which we feel would be better spent on more constructive business.”

The four (see below) board of education candidates — including two incumbents — were offended by our tough, pointed questions. “We are running a positive campaign and believe these questions are negative in nature. The challengers will not disrespect the current members of the board.” Write softer questions and we might condescend to answer, they in effect said.

Well, somebody has gotten disrespected in this mess of mass political cowardice — the 43,000 readers of this newspaper (a minimum estimate, since that’s how many homes we deliver to each week) and the nearly 53,000 people who visit our website.

By rejecting the tough questions, these candidates have demonstrated an arrogant disregard for the thousands of voters and taxpayers in this community who will never go to a sparsely attended, antiseptic “meet and greet,” so-called forum with its carefully screened, milquetoast “questions” and who depend on this news source to acquaint them with the character of the candidates and the issues they must face.

Ballard, Babb, Hannah, Mindar, Simmons, Smith, Smola, Jensen-Linton and Aasen have ducked maybe the only hard questions they will be getting this political season.

They are all running as Republicans.

What a sorry scenario.

Whatever else they may have done or accomplished previously, they now seem ... small.

We draw voters’ and taxpayers’ attention to the candidates who did not duck the tough questions. Their responses and the “negative” questions are reprinted in this issue as well as online.

We invite you to consider their political courage and their sense of responsibility to the voters and taxpayers.

Read the questions. See if the questions asked some important things you want and deserve to know.

See who answered. And then vote.

[UPDATE: Tuesday night, July 1]

Post 1 Board of Education candidate David Houston has sent in his responses to The Citizen's questions.

We welcome his responses. They are posted on this site in the Board of Education forum topic.

We also would welcome any reconsiderers in other races as well. — Cal Beverly

But answering all the off the wall comments on here is too much to ask of them, in my humble opinion.

Submitted by 30YearResident on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 7:55am.

The candidates aren't ducking the "hard questions", each of them are very open at the multitude of forums they attend and people are more than welcome to show up and ask the questions "In Person".

They are objecting (and I agree) to the type of anonymous ridicule laden blogging that goes on in an online forum (just read some of the "Recent Comments" on the right side of your screen). Once that starts, it becomes an endless cycle of trying to keep up and respond to the lies and misleading comments placed in the anonymous blogs by (usually) the competition.

On line forums are NOT a good idea and I applaud the candidates for banding together in rejecting it.

Submitted by susieq on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 8:04am.

The candidates are not saying "no" to the voters. They are saying "no" to the anonymous bloggers. If voters have questions, all they have to do is call the candidates and ask.

Following in the tradition of my Presidential candidate I am totally changing my position on this question which I will later cleverly rationalize as having been my position all along. Just because we are entrusting them with $200,000,000 of our money does not mean that they should have to answer difficult questions. Therefore, the good bloggers here should be able to come up with some questions that the candidates can answer. I am willing to go out on the limb and start:

Question 1: Ginger or Mary Anne?

Submitted by sageadvice on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 9:41am.

Cal shoulda started wif such questiones, but worked his way into the tough ones like Ginger or Mary Anne. Aint no gud anser tuh thet one---Ginger for a date, Mary Anne fer your chidren!

"What we have here is a failure to communicate."

First, to answer your question: Mary Anne, for sure.

A related topic: Is the professor gay?

Now down to the more serious business of crafting a list of answerable questions for the candidates.

(1) Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?

(2) If you had a choice between (a) winning the election and (b) contracting mad cow disease, which would you choose?

(3) Boxers or briefs? (should be an easy one for the cops)

(4) How many wingbeats per minute must a swallow maintain in order to carry your average coconut?

(5) Suppose that Fayetteville were Mayberry. Who is Andy? Barney? Floyd? Goober? Gomer? Howard? Aunt Bea? Opie?

(6) How many Fayette sheriff's candidates does it take to screw up a forum?

(7) Henry or Colonel Potter?

(8) Look at the candidate to your left and offer one compliment and one criticism.

(9) Choose the sheriff who most fully manifests the qualities that you value in a sheriff:

(a) Buford Pusser
(b) Sheriff Cooley
(c) Andy Taylor
(d) Matt Dillon
(e) Boss Hogg

(10) A pitcher has just thrown the fewest possible number of pitches that can be thrown by one pitcher in a complete game. Did he win or lose? What was the score? Was he home or visitor?

He lost.
1 to nil
His team bats first.

First through 8th inning, each batter hits first pitch and is thrown out or ball is caught. In bottom of ninth first batter takes first pitch over the fences for a homer ending the game. 24 pitches.

Am I write or is I rong?

But it would be 25 pitches, right? 3 per inning for 8 = 24, plus the homer in the 9th.

Of course, what this little puzzle doesn't tell you is how the guy would feel watching that ball sail over the fence when he was on the verge of pitching a super-perfect game.

When I played league ball as a teen I once pitched a no-hitter and lost, due to errors. Hmmmm.... It's tempting to take that as a sort of metaphor for life.

The long disenfranchised voters have been given an opportunity to speak out. This is historic. Now the real important questions can be asked.

This method was tried by the Citizen Newspaper in Tyrone’s Election last Fall. It unmasked Tyrone’s secret government. Questions asked at the forum led to the firing of Town Mgr. Barry Amos & Asst. Mgr. Valerie Caldwell. Both are now under investigation to find out why they paid themselves huge funds that were not budgeted.

The forum questions also unmasked the elected representatives, Mayor Rehwaldt, Councilmen Tracy Young & Eric Dial and Appointed Planning Chairman Gordon Shenkle.

All these candidates publicly promised to seriously examine, change or repeal Tyrone’s destructive zoning ordinance. But as soon as they were elected each one of them voted no to any change. Their big lying faces pictured in the Citizen, at the Forum, with quotes of promises they never intended to keep.

Like all politicians they took a hot issue and used it just to get elected. Many, many thanks to Cal and his newspaper for giving the people a voice they otherwise would not have had. Keep it up.

Those candidates that don’t want to participate can be identified as the ones you definitely don’t want to vote for. Maybe our so called people’s representatives will be taught a lesson for the future.

Submitted by buckstopshere on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 10:50pm.

Politicians in this county have had an atitude that they are above the little people that they were elected to serve. They have tweaked by-laws to get rid of transparency and squashed the people's right to be informed. I think the arrogance of these elected officials will ultimately be their swan song!
Cal, thanks for looking out for us simpletons that try to do the right thing each day. All we want is to be heard, answered politely and treated with respect. Is that too much to ask?
If you listen close enough, you can hear the crashing sound of the good ole boy club here in Fayette County!!!

Submitted by PTC_factchecker on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 10:01pm.

I'd like to take this moment to remind those who review this site of a very simple fact.

Most of the world is not like you.

Blogging, chatting, and online posting may be a trend that is growing, but for the vast majority of folks, it's just not what they do.

Cal presents two statistics he thinks are important:
Well, somebody has gotten disrespected in this mess of mass political cowardice — the 43,000 readers of this newspaper (a minimum estimate, since that’s how many homes we deliver to each week) and the nearly 53,000 people who visit our website

Cal - the population of Fayette County is nearly 90,000. I would strongly suggest that a good portion of those who review the website are NOT Fayette County residents. I further suggest that a good portion of those whose lawns get littered with the Citizen each week look at it long enough to let it hit their trash cans.

I went to the Metro Fayette Kiwanis forum for the Commission seats, and it was depressing to see so few people actually show up. I certainly didn't see you there, Cal. In looking at all the forums available in the days coming up to the election, however, I see that the average citizen has MANY opportunities to meet the candidates face-to-face, watch what they say, and do something a blog can never do - watch HOW they say it.

Why do YouTube and television debates work well? You can actually see the people answering immediately. Anybody can take the time to craft a response for writing...heck, written responses are the easiest to let others write for you!

So, I say to you, instead of whining that no one will answer your questions, show up at these forums with your video camera, asking the same questions, and see how they answer. Then post the videos online. You want to see how politicians act under pressure - put a video camera in their face.

I'm sorry your pity party isn't going the way you wanted it to....but your response is juvenile and making the discussion about you, not about the issues.

And for those of you too lazy to actually attend a forum, who love to blast from your keyboards, I'm afraid of you showing up at the polls. You're not informed enough to vote.

Submitted by tc on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 11:54pm.

What makes you think we haven't attended a forum? Why would you assume that we are lazy and ignorant? How do you know who uses the web site? By the way, the population of Fayette County is more than 107,000 - not that it really matters. For those of us who have attended more than one forum, we have been rewarded with many rehearsed and repeated speeches by candidates who don't care enough to vary their presentation. Frankly, I think it's great to have as many avenues for different types of communication as possible.

Voice of Fayette Future's picture
Submitted by Voice of Fayett... on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 4:49am.

Of the many forums I have attended, I found them to be of limited value mainly because tough questions are NEVER asked. Frequently you will have softball moderators like lawyers like Doug Warner or Dennis the Menace and they wouldn't dare upset anyone from the developer Chamber crowd. Their bias is obvious.

True, the forums give you some feel for how the people behave and speak and carry themselves. But if you already know the candidates you don't walk away with much.

What these people are saying with the Boycott is that if there is information they don't want us to have, we won't get it. You have to sue 'em and then one of these lawyers makes a bundle defending it.

Hannah: isn't his wife's employment a concern? DA: Would you testify as a character witness for a defendant again? Simmons: Why did you take down the glowing endorsement from your former chief? Hearn: are you going to bring back the county people that were discharged and what is your view on the employee plan since you were a former employee?

These are valid questions. Their rejection means that you can expect the same response if you file Sunshine Law request.

The cameras in the back of the auditorium? Those events were taped by Comcast for later local broadcast. I admit that I don't know the broadcast schedule but then, I was there and probably would not watch it again. And for the record, it was not Cal but John Munford was there.

What is wrong with having many different avenues available to keep people informed? Unfortunately, no single medium, print, broadcast or electronic will reach everyone. So why not have multiple opportunities to interact with the candidates? Not everyone has the same chance to go to forums or blog or meet the candidates. Not everyone who does not go to the forums is lazy, they might just be busy with life.

I blog here, I go to the forums and I talk to the candidates when the opportunity presents itself. I am a VERY informed voter. I think you are making too many assumptions about the quality of the information here and the intelligence of the bloggers. Stick around, you might learn something.

And the population of Fayette County is currently estimated at 106,000.

But, I appreciate you calling these candidates to the carpet. If these politicians wants softball questions they should go interview at the SF Chronicle, or LA Times.

Thanks for making it a point to draw out the thinner skinned bureaucrats, and shedding light on the citizens that will elect these folks.

How pitiful Cal….the real story is the fact that a handful of citizens willing to do public service stood up to your negative, trash bashing blogs. So pitiful, that you’ve now repeated the story of their incredible fortitude to even dare defy you three times in one day. Now the headlines change again….no matter how you write it Cal, they didn’t disrespect the voter or the reader; they simply demanded respect for themselves. Something you’re not willing to give. Why do people feel that political office does not have to be earned, and that it is a privilege to serve? Thin skin and politicians does not work. If a citizen asks a ludicrous, baseless question, anyone worth a taxpayer's dollar should be able to verbally handle such a situation. That's easy stuff compared to turning the crime rate around, controlling currently uncontrolled growth, or raising our schools' math scores. Such refusals to address citizens in raw, unfiltered forums may leave many a politician wondering why there was no return on their campaigning dollars invested.

GEORGIA’S SUNSHINE LAWS??

Submitted by tc on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 9:14pm.

I don't see how the proposal for The Citizen Forum is any different than submitting anonymous questions at one of the community forums EXCEPT that the candidates might actually see the questions online. At a recent commissioner's forum, for example, I saw the number of audience members who submitted questions - only a fraction of those questions were actually asked. Although there are some obvious risks associated with an online forum, the candidate really holds the cards in the way he or she responds. If someone is running for public office, they should be accessible and accountable to the community they are serving. Transparency in government starts with people-to-people encounters. Forums such as the one this newpaper is attempting to launch this year are the wave of the future. They will require some tweaking, but will ultimately encourage more citizens to be active in the political process. Move on and upward!

I am having trouble trying to reconcile the stated objections of the sheriffs candidates. While it is easy to recognize that none of the sworn officers want to contradict their sheriff, they have been following his orders their entire careers, they have to break from the pack, and show that they want to earn the job, rather that inherit the position.

I know two of these deputies and have met the third. They are all honorable men and by my standards excellent law enforcement officers. It is difficult to break with the chain of command that has been the constant throughout their careers.

Someone is going to have to step out, or lose the race to the outsider.

Submitted by the weasel on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 10:40pm.

I too am having a great deal of trouble deciding who to vote for as our new Sheriff. Several years ago Fayette County had a wide-spread reputation for NOT being the place you would want to commit a crime. That has gradually changed. It appears that Fayette County law enforcement did not keep up with the times, the growth of the county, and what has been happening in the surrounding counties. The tough reputation seems to have vanished.

I was at the Fayette Pavillion tonight. In a period of 15 minutes I saw two people pulled over by Fayetteville Police. About an hour later, I saw two more people pulled over by the Fayetteville Police - this time on 314.

I visit the Pavillion fairly often and had never witnessed this much police activity before. This made me wonder if this increase in police activity was triggered by Dave Simmons and his comments regarding the amount of crime in Fayette County that is not reported to the public. Then I thought of how the other 3 candidates all come from the current Sheriff's department. Would they continue "business as usual" because that is how they have been trained and what they know.

When I left the Sheriff's forum the other night there were things I liked about every candidate although I leaned toward either Babb or Mindar (although Mindar seemed a little immature). Now I think I may be voting for Simmons. He would bring fresh ideas and a new plan for the department. Maybe that is what we need?

Good grief.... these are the same guys that kick in the doors of the drug thugs and such. And these guys are so thin skinned as avoid a few challenging questions raised by the concern citizens they propose to serve? Puzzled

Respectfully guys..... give it up.

What a sad little group of politicians.

As $age pointed out if we write her in or Muddle and they get the majority of the vote for Sheriff they could actually be the next Sheriff.

The school board is just as sad. In my opinion we really have never had anyone with backbone on the school board anyway so.......it's hard to lose something when you never had anything to begin with.!!

County commission is the same: hard to lose good people if you never had any to begin with!

You and the candidates just don’t get it.

Asking questions of candidates via a blog/forum is old hat. Have you read either of the candidates WEB sites that are running for the Office of the President of the United States? Have you ever heard of ‘youtube.com’ or CNN?

Cal could just as easily e-mailed or snail-mailed each candidate the list of questions and asked for a written response from each candidate. The method by which the question is asked is IRRELEVANT.

Personally I can understand some of the fear the WEB poses to these candidates. Have you seen some of their WEB sites? Some of them look like they were put together by volunteers with law degrees or people that used to be CPA’s.

The FACT of the matter is that the candidates are simply afraid of the questions being asked. They only seem to want to answer ‘softball’ type questions like; What’s your favorite vegetable?

Cal’s questions, and hundreds more, are being asked because Cal has gleaned them from the hundreds or more that the TAX PAYING CITIZENS of Fayette County have expressed on these blogs.

I ask you, and the candidates; what difference does it make how the questions are asked?

If the BOE candidates think that the questions have a negative connotation they shouldn’t be surprised. Hears why: 1. After many, many months of redistricting meetings where just about everyone felt they got the shaft in one form or another. 2. After years of complaining about ‘out of county’ students attending Fayette County schools NOTHING HAS CHANGED! The BOE gave us poor lip-service but actually did NOTHING!

The candidates for county Sheriff are just as bad. Many of Cal’s questions came directly from posts on these blogs.

Are you trying to tell me that because I blog, my question isn’t valid? Because I have a CCW or drive a Chevy I’m not allowed to ask my questions of a candidate via the WEB?

This isn’t China. This is AMERICA!

If you didn’t read it in another blog I’ll summarize what happens to TOUGH questions that get submitted at these candidate social gatherings. THEY NEVER GET ASKED! The local censor always seems to not pass the TOUGH question up to the podium. These are STAGED events. Do you not understand that?

Before I forget, a candidate for public office has NO right to not answer a ligament question from a tax paying citizen regardless of how it is asked!

Maybe I should add that I feel the questions could be answered however it is the responses that cloud the ISSUES and the defense of the answers by the candidates have no end. People can say anything based on hearsay and NOT fact based which is why I say this forum is not good. Allow them to answer the questions that the CITIZEN proposed and let it be. Let the readers make their own judgments without the PEANUT gallery responses.

At times it is easier to stick our heads in the sand and just go with the flow as we go about living our hectic lifestyles. If things do not affect us personally, why should we go through the trouble of wanting to try to change it? I am very grateful to Cal Beverly and the Citizen for helping me see how the actions of elected officials touch home. It is easy to just be concerned about the presidential election, the rising price of gas and food, and not realize that we are being violated right under our very noses. Because of the Citizen, I decided to launch my own investigations, look into people's track records and make my own conclusions. I have a vested interested in my community because although I am a transplant, this is MY HOME, this is where my tax money is spent, and after being here for two decades, I am tired of the "elite club" which wants to rule with ego and not with the best interested of the people at heart. Last night, even when my very tired spirit and body were telling me to stay home after a very long day, I decided to attend the Forum at the Fayetteville Library. I am very happy I did! Ballard wants to hold on to his position so desperately that I don't think he realizes what an embarrassment he is to our community. I could not believe it when last night he spoke about being a character witness for someone in his prayer group - someone who had previously been convicted of child molesting, someone with a drinking problem, and the list goes on. Come on, Scott, just because a person goes to the same church as we do does not make the person eligible for canonization. The man poses a threat to our society and that is the bottom line. Please don't give us the song and dance routine about the subpoena...What made my stomach turn was Ballard's response to a question about giving internet child predators probation: since when does it matter whether the person had physical contact with the child; he has it in his mind and that is more than enough for many of us parents. Ballard your choices have hindered our community, and it is time for you to just go back to being a lawyer and not a county official.
I decided to stay for the rest of the Forum, even though my stomach was rumbling from not having dinner, and I was beginning to yawn from the long day. I am very glad I did. I truly needed to hear what the 4 gentlemen running for sheriff had to say. Babb, you certainly do not have my vote. You kept asking the panel to repeat the question, at times you did not answer the question being asked, and when asked why you should be elected sheriff you named Ballard as one of your supporters...a no-no in my book. The other gentlemen were quite articulate, but Mindar kept nodding in agreement to what his opponents had to say. Mindar, you are running against them, not agreeing with their platform - your own platform has to be much more unique than theirs. I found Dave Simmons to give the most educated and innovative answers, and hope and pray that the people of our county give him a chance. He brings much more experience to the job than the others combined, and best of all, he is not part of the elite club, the good ole boys that want to rule the roost. We are very fortunate to still have a decent county, and we need to do all we can to protect it from the evils of other surrounding counties. Let's get active and get out and vote!

The over 100,000 residents of Fayette County are NOT represented by the relatively few participants on this blog. Those who have attended the forums, viewed the candidate’s websites, and spoken with respected neighbors and friends will make an informed vote on July 15. The decision of the majority of the citizens of Fayette County will not be based on what they read on The Citizen blog. Many are expressing tremendous respect for the decision of those candidates who chose not to participate/accept the invitation of The Citizen. For the past two years it has been my pleasure to realize that the majority of the citizens in Fayetteville and Peachtree City ARE NOT represented by some of the opinions expressed on this site. It is true, if the paper is read, once the reader browses the ‘ads’ and looks at the local news regarding high school scores and student achievement – the paper is thrown away.

I don't know about others but I do read TheCitizen--I read the news, Editorials, Letters to Editor, Free Speech and everything but the sports pages--though I do glance through them. Reading TheCitizen, paper copy and on the internet keeps me up on what is going on in the community. By reading it online daily I know if there has been a crime committed, if a developer is trying to pull another dirty trick, if there is work going on in the area that woudl cause traffic problems and what other citizens are thinking. Eventually, like all papers, it does go in the trash. I appreciate tremendously that there is a local paper and that it offers an internet copy and a place to voice our opinions. The AJC and other papers do not keep you up on local issues. Thanks to TheCitizen and its staff for keeping us informed . Ido not always agree with the journalists who are featured but still like to read their views.

Do you really want to be an informed voter?
First understand, unlike the statement of one blogger, a candidate does not give up his or her right to refuse to answer a question from a tax-paying citizen. He simply made that up. Several candidates have proven that already.
Secondly, I don’t think any of the candidates are afraid of the so-called “tough questions”. They might not even be opposed to answering them. What they are opposed to is all the lame brain, ignorant and stupid blogs, responding to their answer. It has to be similar to a man cleaning out his septic tank by standing on the bottom and bailing with a bucket…you will get it all over you no matter how good a bailer (or blogger) you are.
Also, how is it that you would conclude Cal is representing every blogger on this site; and, do you squeal with delight every time someone identifies the group as the little people, or the common man, or such? Well, you ask, what else could he possibly be doing? Selling newspapers, and ads is the business he’s in. Why would you think he would be doing anything else? You’ve read it somewhere…other than that, just about anything goes, or, are you going to let those who do not have an opponent have a free pass? Cal may give bloggers “a voice” if you want to refer to it that way, but every blogger is compelled to respond, and the responses to a candidate’s statements or answers run the gambit from, “I like that answer and that’s why I’m voting for you”, to, “You must think we little people are fools, we’re going to vote you out this time, you’ve got to go”.
It seems that some bloggers are just 5 or 6 questions (or answers) away from voting for Mickey Mouse. And, you put the monkey on the back of the candidate to make you an informed voter.
Why don’t you compromise? Why don’t you visit the all-popular Candidate Website, get the candidate’s email address, identify your self (with the name your mother gave you) and ask your question in a sincere, straight forward manner of the candidate. If they answer it, and they probably will, their answer goes straight to you, without 10 to 20 village idiot comments setout directly below it. Check the rules, there is no restriction on “village idiot comments”, I checked. If you didn’t read all those comments, you would probably already be an informed voter. On the other hand, if you feel compelled to read them all, you probably don’t desire to be informed, you’re just easily entertained. And, it is free as long as it last.

You are either naive or trying to fool some.

You say to ask A PIOLITICIAN A QUESTION AWAY FROM OTHERS AND HE WILL PROBABLY ANSWER YOU.
I think there is no doubt of that.
The problem comes when you ask a follow-up question, and then another follow-up question, and then a detailed follow-up question, and then he simply walks away rather than say what he really thinks!
It happens all of the time on TV.
I think you know that!
Just ask one how many horse thieves he had in his past extended families back to the Mayflower, and the conversation will be over for a politician.
Ask me and I'll say that I'm not sure but very likely at least one---I know some made liquor---but I don't. That would however cost me a vote or two! One needs to lie and be deceptive if a politician.

and I'll go line for line with you where it states that a candidate has a RIGHT to not answer a question from a tax paying citizen.

"First understand, unlike the statement of one blogger, a candidate does not give up his or her right to refuse to answer a question from a tax-paying citizen. He simply made that up. Several candidates have proven that already." was NOT what was stated.

The title of the original forum post was, "I respect their right not to answer YOUR forum". If you can show me something in the Constitution that backs that up I will retract my statement.

"What they are opposed to is all the lame brain, ignorant and stupid blogs, responding to their answer."

After careful consideration a few of the "I wont respond to the negative connotations of your questions" have changed their minds and have indeed responded.

I would suggest you research the answers to the questions that some of the candidates have posted. You will find that the "lame brain, ignorant and stupid" bloggers have given praise to those that have responded. They, the "lame brain, ignorant and stupid" may not have agreed with the answers given but thanked the candidate for at least having the fortitude to reply.

"Also, how is it that you would conclude Cal is representing every blogger on this site"

Know one said Cal was representing EVERY blogger. You did.

"you put the monkey on the back of the candidate to make you an informed voter."

Just where are we supposed to put the monkey if a candidate is unable or unwilling to answer the question(s) of the voters? Just how is the "informed" voter to decide if the candidate won't answer the voter’s questions? Are you suggesting we use a Ouija-Board to choose the best candidate?

"Why don’t you compromise? Why don’t you visit the all-popular Candidate Website, get the candidate’s email address, identify your self (with the name your mother gave you) and ask your question in a sincere, straight forward manner of the candidate."

I'll do you one better. I went to the candidate forums and pronounced/spelled my name for the sponsor, submitted my questions and they were never asked. So what good did that do?

You assume that if I'm attending a 'sponsored' candidate forum that the candidates will receive/respond to my questions. You are mistaken.

"On the other hand, if you feel compelled to read them all, you probably don’t desire to be informed, you’re just easily entertained."

Unlike you I try and gather as much information as possible before I make a decision that can cost me and my fellow tax payers $200,000,000.

If it’s ‘heads’ then you’ll vote for candidate “X”, that’s your decision. The rest of us would rather take our time and make an educated decision with the information provided if that’s okay with you.

Unless I missed something you are now agreeing with me, at least in your 07/03/2008 blog. I feel better.
I believe a person, candidate, as well, has every right that any other person has unless his or her rights have been restricted somewhere. You might not like it. But rights don’t go away just because you don’t want someone to have them. I’m still not sure whether you want candidates to have the same rights as other citizens or not. But,I sure do.

But enough of this, I’m going to sleep.

My original statement of, “and I'll go line for line with you where it states that a candidate has a RIGHT to not answer a question from a tax paying citizen”. was an open invitation to you to go through the Constitution line by line if necessary and show me where it states that a candidate has a "RIGHT" to NOT answer a question.

A candidate can make a "CHOICE" to either answer or not answer but they have no “RIGHT” not to answer unless they plan on invoking the Fifth Amendment.

Perhaps answering Cal’s questions would have put one or more of them in a self incriminating position.

This is classic theater. A bunch of dumb Republicans critisizing Republicans.

I have some news that most of you are going to have a very, VERY difficult time understanding: Democrats love America (gasp), don't actually have membership cards for Al Queda (ooooh), and really do represent working-class Americans.

That would be YOU.

99% of PTC residents are regular working-class folks.

And yet you think you have something in common with Rush Limbaugh who just signed a 400 million dollar contract. Get real. HE doesn't know you, and doesn't want to. He'd rather run off to the Dominican Republic with Viagra, get divorced (again for the third time), pop pills, and tell you how to think. He wouldn't give you the time of day.

Fantasy land is at Disney. Not PTC. It's time for a lot of you to grow up and stop voting based on your hearts or what some billionaire on the radio tells you.

Use your head. It's not popular, but it actually works.

Now, flame away!

I may not make the money Rush does, but I definitely have alot in common with him. I have listen to him on the radio, read his books, and many newsletters. I love his online site. He is one of the most entertaining and funny people I have ever heard. He made the Clinton years bearable (mostly). He has an amazing ability to assess a subject or situation and see angles that no one else does and he makes me THINK. More than anything, he articulates so many of the same beliefs that I have and does it so well. He isn't perfect and does not claim to be perfect but he is a patriot. There is no doubt in my mind that he loves this country. I have listen to him for 15plus years and he has been a blessing to me.

I am right with you. I have enjoyed listening to Rush for years. I love your comment of making the Clinton years bearable(ALMOST).
Heck, show me a perfect person on this earth. Rush can take the heat and give it back even hotter.
Hey, I should have flunked college to make that kind of money that he does. People bash him all the time I think it makes him want to do his job even more. More power to you Rush.
I am sure if Obama get President that Rush will have us laughing even harder than Clinton. At least I know Rush will make it bearable (alot of almost). I am glad that we have flunk out college guys that some people don't think they have a brain and they make the money he does. Maybe, I should have flunked college. LOL
I do truly admire him for his courage to say the things he does and take the heat. I am sure he's got his armor on for Obama just in case.
USArmybrat you said it Rush is a true patriot. Since we like Rush does that make us conservative?
There seems to be alot of liberals on here. Do like me ignore them.
We will just listen to Rush and laugh while they fight over who is right.

I hope all is well. I've been incredibly busy, but my blogging bros and sisters are always close in thought, if not in person. Which leads me to a few questions...

What do you have in common with Rush?

I doubt it is the drug habit or the illegal viagra through customs thing.

His mom said of his college years, "He flunked everything." Pretty impressive start (source: Wikipedia).

What do think of the term "Halfrican American?" Your kindred Rush used that term to describe the democratic presidential nominee and Halle beautiful Barry. Do you think that is an appropriate term?

What do you consider "alot" of ex-spouses?

How did you like the song, "Barack, the magic negro?"

Do you make fun of people with neurological disorders if they are famous (read Michael J. Fox)?

In 1992 while Rush was still on television, he defended Marge Schott, then owner of The Reds, as being "punished for simple words." Yes, Rush the free speech advocate felt that Marge Schott should not have been disciplined for saying the following things as a Major League owner. Keep in mind, I have sensored Marge's words for this web site: From Wikipedia:

"On November 13, 1992, Charles "Cal" Levy, a former marketing director for the Reds, stated in a deposition for Tim Sabo, a former employee who was suing the team that he'd heard Schott refer to then-Reds outfielders Eric Davis and Dave Parker as "million-dollar ni##ers."

"Levy, a Jew, also alleged that Schott kept an old Nazi swastika armband at her home and claims he overheard her say "sneaky g@#da*n Jews are all alike."[2] The next day, Schott issued a statement saying the claims of racism levied against her were overstated and that she didn't mean to offend anyone with her statement or her ownership of the armband. On November 29, Schott said the "million dollar ni##ers" comment was made in jest, but then stated that she felt that Adolf Hitler was initially good for Germany and didn't understand how the epithet "Jap" could be offensive.

During the same season, a former Oakland Athletics executive assistant, Sharon Jones, is quoted in the New York Times as having overheard Schott state: "I would never hire another ni##er. I'd rather have a trained monkey working for me than a ni##er," before the start of an owners' conference call.[3]"

You know, USArmybrat, I can think of many, many Americans that I would say I have "alot in common with." Rush is not one of them; not close; not by a long schott.

Cheers,

Kevin "Hack" King

What do I have in common with Rush? My belief in this country, for starters, and our people. We both believe that anyone can make it here, if they are willing to work hard at it. We both believe in the unlimited ability of this country. All countries have their dark chapters in history, but the USA is the BEST, period. I believe Rush has suffered for his addiction problem alot more than you know. Flunking out in college? Rush has spoken about that many times, along with talking about the times that he was fired from jobs. He uses it as an example of how you can have so many strikes against you and still succeed in life, as he has in so many ways. Much of what Rush does in the parodies about other is poking fun to make a point. I hate the ugly words that Schott used and her racist attitude but I believe, like Rush, that she has the right to be a moron and say those words. Our freedom of speech is not just a freedom to voice nice thoughts but is a protection to us all, even the morons like Schott. Got to go...hope you and yours are having a great summer!

Just what kind of entertainment do you like?

Limbaugh will make a lot of static for the next four years at least over either Obama or McCain.
Any USA President is his "meat." He is working however to put the actor, fuzzy brain, and spendthrift, "Reagan," on Mount Rusbo!

Many other "conservatives" are briefed by staff on anything he says of interest to them.
Corporations, mostly devious ones, pay him handsomely to promote Snapple, or expensive radios or some such crap at excessive prices at their Island conventions and of course to his employer.
