Tyrone Council fires long-time town clerkWed, 06/11/2008 - 1:15pm
By: Ben Nelms
Nearly 20 years with the town of Tyrone came to an abrupt end Tuesday night for Town Clerk Valerie Caldwell, as council members voted 4-0 to terminate her employment with no explanation. The council went into executive session after a lengthy budget meeting designed to whittle down nearly $740,000 in projected town expenditures. They emerged less than 20 minutes later and, as the public portion of the meeting opened, a motion was made to terminate Caldwell immediately. The vote, with no discussion, was unanimous. Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Don Rehwaldt did not give a reason why the termination was made. Rewaldt did acknowledge that the town has a personnel policy and that it might include a procedure for progressive discipline. Personnel policies that include progressive discipline measures customarily include procedures for various infractions, including those of a gross misconduct nature that warrant immediate termination. The Citizen has requested a copy of the policy. Many in Tyrone have long called for Caldwell’s termination, as they did for that of former Town Manager Barry Amos. Allegations by some of a variety of improprieties relating to the job performance of Caldwell and Amos have existed for more than a year. Amos, with Caldwell in tow, was the central feature of last year’s election campaign. login to post comments |
