Crosswinds Tuesday morning are thought to be responsible for causing a small private plane to become lodged in a tree as the aircraft was attempting to take off from a private airstrip on Ga. Highway 92 north of Fayetteville. No injuries were reported in the incident. The Piper Cub with two passengers was taking off from the Hwy. 92 property at approximately 9 a.m. when it hit crosswinds that caused it to “belly-up” in the tree, Fayette County Sheriff’s Capt. Tommy Pope said after interviewing the pilot. The plane came to rest in a tree near the take-off site. The plane and its two occupants, pilot W.A. McLendon and passenger P.E. Johnson, were found to be uninjured after Fayette fire crews arrived with a ladder to extricate them from the tree, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Whiteside. Representatives from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. NTSB is arranging for a private contractor to remove the plane from the tree, Whiteside said. login to post comments |
