Look! Up in the tree! It’s a plane!

Crosswinds Tuesday morning are thought to be responsible for causing a small private plane to become lodged in a tree as the aircraft was attempting to take off from a private airstrip on Ga. Highway 92 north of Fayetteville. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The Piper Cub with two passengers was taking off from the Hwy. 92 property at approximately 9 a.m. when it hit crosswinds that caused it to “belly-up” in the tree, Fayette County Sheriff’s Capt. Tommy Pope said after interviewing the pilot.

The plane came to rest in a tree near the take-off site. The plane and its two occupants, pilot W.A. McLendon and passenger P.E. Johnson, were found to be uninjured after Fayette fire crews arrived with a ladder to extricate them from the tree, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Whiteside.

Representatives from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. NTSB is arranging for a private contractor to remove the plane from the tree, Whiteside said.

From the NTSB database:

The pilot of a Piper J3C-65 stated he was conducting a personal flight with his friend. He allowed his friend, a non-certificated pilot, to control the airplane on takeoff. At lift-off the passenger lost control of airplane and it veered to the right. The pilot took control of the airplane, but was unable to maintain control of the airplane. The airplane collided with a tree about 100 feet to the right of the end of the runway. The pilot did not report any flight control or mechanical anomalies prior to the accident.

What a shame piper cubs are so cute and cheery. I hope they get the plane down with minimal damage.

cracked and the fuselage is not twisted it should be an easy fix. My guess is that they'll at least replace some fabric.
