It’s going to be a competitive race to see who will replace A.G. VanLandingham on the Fayette County Commission.

When qualifying ended Friday, five candidates had qualified for the race. For the first time in many elections, the race will pit Democrats versus Republicans. The candidates are:

• Wendy Felton, 43, a Democrat who works part-time as an accounting clerk for the city of Fayetteville.

• Robert Horgan,42, a Republican, and the only non-African-American in the race, who is the franchisee for Mr. Transmission in Fayetteville.

• Malcolm Hughes,49, a Republican who is a CPA.

• Charles Rousseau, 45, a Democrat who works for Fulton County as an assistant director for parks and recreation.

• Emory Wilkerson, 45, a Republican, who is an attorney.

The election is March 21 and Fayette County Elections Supervisor Margaret Malone said the winning candidate must receive 50 percent plus one vote to be elected. If no candidate receives a majority, the runoff election would be April 18.
