PTC shopping center vote tabled

A developer’s request to exceed Peachtree City’s shopping center size guidelines by 25,000 square feet has been sent back to the drawing board for two weeks.

Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett said at tonight’s City Council meeting that the plan was “close” to earning her vote, but she wanted to increase the buffer along Hwy. 54, along Planterra Way and abutting the Cardiff Park subdivision. Plunkett said she also wanted to see an easement that would allow the city to build an access road across Planterra Way to reach Huddleston Road should it be needed in the future.

The matter now goes back to the city’s planning commission for consideration and is anticipated to be back before the City Council at its June 19th meeting.

Plunkett said she also wanted in writing the type of landscaping that would be done by the developer in the median of the highway, an offer made at the meeting to sweeten the deal.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has told Capital City Development that the shopping center would meet the state regulations for having a traffic light on Hwy. 54, which would be in-between the current lights at Planterra Way and MacDuff Parkway.

Why do we keep building more and MORE retail space when there is so much retail space struggling or VACANT? There are spaces in PTC that have been vacant for ***years*** now. I honestly and truly can't understand why the council keeps approving more retail space? I must be stupid - will someone explain it all to me??

Just because there are empty spaces around is not grounds for the Council to not approve new buildings. IF the zoning is in place, the owners are free to build within the zoning guidelines. I'm not saying it good business practice for the developers, but the Council's hands are tied in many cases.

Sort of like, you can add a room to your house, as long it's within the setbacks etc. It doesn't matter whether or not the rest of the citizens think you need it.

I would be laughed out of town if I asked the city to let me use/buy
city streets to enlarge my house. I, an average citizen, would not be able to build a house that did not fit the lot--too big-wrong kind, etc. Of course, with the status quo in Peachtree City these days, if you are a developer or one of the "in crowd" exceptions are not the exception. Also, if my house became an eyesore the city would cite me and I could either correct it or be hit with a hefty fine and have to correct it anyway. Stores close and remain closed and deteriorate and nothing is done about it--this is true with many big box stores. Look what has happened in other counties when Wal-Mart, etc have closed a store. These companies open the stores, if they are profitable they may stay open, if not they close them, claim a loss and move on and the community is stuck with an eyesore and loss of tax income.Since they open so many one or two stores closing is no big deal.

Anyone reading the papers these days can see how many restaurants, stores, big boxes etc are pulling out.

With Mr. Haddix and Mr. Sturbaum, and hopefully Ms. Plunkett on board maybe now we can start doing something about retaining what is left of our community.

as saying I would have voted against the original K-mart Big Box, and everyone since then. But that means that we couldn't have had a Kroger either.

I believe this area was already approved for 150K square feet, with the developer seeking an additional 25K square feet. I'm not convinced this will be the ruin of PTC.

The most glaring empty retail in PTC that comes to mind is the old Buckhead Brewery Building. And I believe that is a failed Walgreens Flip that caused someone to be holding the bag.

Are you saying the Council could win a lawsuit against a developer/builder by denying zoning/permits based on empty buildings elsewhere? I guess anything is possible, but it's not likely.

I can't figure out what they are thinking either....it takes a year or two to get approval to build, then they build which takes 8 months then they occupy, then they are out of business in 4 to 6 months and we have to stare at empty buildings for years - Case in point the San Francisco bread company, Little Gym, Smoothie whatever, which I might add is just across the street from the other "new" shopping center. This is just one little section - look around, this is happening all over Fayette and Coweta County - but according to the officials we are still in growth mode....ugh!!!

Plunkett will vote for this development eventually, that's a given.

She hasn't got the stomach to fight it. She's a wimp!

While I'm telling you the future, I might as well tell you she'll run for mayor in the next election too.

Any takers?

The cops need a new big box low end store to set up drug stings. The wallytrash mcBULLY gave us is getting used too much. Good job planning on a new drug buy place, (oopppps), I mean low-end retail thing. Brilliant!

If it is a strip mall, and trashy, and you can find it in riverdale, its good enough for us.

You could see local government "at work" at tonight's city council meeting. Many long hours of hard work from city staff, city commissions, petitioners, citizens and others came to a culmination - almost tonight and it was a treat to watch it happen. Take notice PTC, our mayor's 'Gomer Pylish' mannerisms are an embarrassment, Boone should be relieved of his seat ASAP - remember his words from tonight, "...it's not our job to micro-manage...." The "D"-ynamic Duo continue to keep their campaign promises of representing the whole city and we are grateful for your genuine actions. The real treat was to watch Cyndi-sational get her way with additional conditions on a project that will no doubt - be built. Cyndi has realized that with the council locked in a 2-2 vote on most issues, she 'has the Power' and is not reluctant to use it!! Please be kind, meow!!

I was beginning to think that you were following in the wake of our clown of a mayor. It is good to see that you really have the best interests of our town at heart. Maybe with Mr. Haddix, Mr. Sturbaum and now you--we can prevent some of the damange that our "esteemed" (and I use the term loosely) mayor and his cronies seem bent on doing to Peachtree City. Keep up the good work.
