Fayette Shopping?

I can’t really figure out why Fayette County has become the shopping mecca of the world. I guess other areas just don’t have the concentration of stores, but things have certainly changed out there in Fayetteland and it’s hard to tell what the attraction is.

As “active seniors,” we often just go shopping for entertainment when there is nothing else to do. Until about a year ago, used to love schlepping through the various stores at the Pavilion and other shopping areas, but we do this less and less because it’s becoming more and more a bad experience and a waste of time.

There was nothing on the calendar this past Friday night, so we headed to the Pavilion to see what we could see. Some of our former favorite haunts left a lot to be desired. Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx are now just a jumble of stuff thrown in piles around the store. Even if you can see and are interested in something, it’s hard to get to it. Clothes have digressed from being nicely styled name brand items to a conglomeration of crazy junk that seemingly nobody would wear. Target offers a better presentation, but everything seems to be overpriced. Kohl’s is okay, but doesn’t offer anything new anymore. Looks like the same items that were there a few months ago. Ross at the Pavilion is just another crazy mess. It was still early so we went to Ross in Peachtree City. Whew, another jumble of junk. The music playing at that Ross store was really annoying and hard to “shop to.” We left there disgusted as well. Tuesday Morning in Peachtree City also has stuff just thrown on the shelves and around the floor. The merchandising presentation just isn’t appealing anymore, and you don’t feel like you want to spend your money on things that obviously have no respected value. The clerks are sometimes friendly, but often have an attitude and are curt and uncaring. I used to find men’s clothes that I liked at Walmart in PTC. For the past six months, their selection of men’s clothes has been very sad. Like Kohl’s the merchandise isn’t turning over anymore, so it just sits there. The clientele in most of the stores seem to be oblivious women with 3 or 4 kids, who they allow to run around screaming while they pick through the aisles, or gaggles of two or three who scuff along, talking loudly to each other. Young men who are dressed like they just emulated the store racks (thrown haphazardly together) drift around here and there, but don’t even seem to be shopping.

We spent the entire evening shopping, but bought nothing and ended up feeling like it was a waste of time. Now that we have all this retail, and have attracted all of these shoppers, shouldn’t these stores be doing something to keep the customer base? Or is it that the national chains rely on their names to attract business? Or is it the shuffling, scuffing, loud talking, hang-around types that they are trying to attract?

As far as I’m concerned, we don’t need what doesn’t appeal to the community of this area. I’m supporting the Fayette shops less and less for a lot of the reasons above. We used to have to go out of this area to shop anyway, and never minded the journey, so things really haven’t changed much after all, I guess. We’ll just head to Newnan where it seems that shoppers are more welcome and attended to, even though the traffic is just as bad.

That is very sad. First of all take some art classes, you will have fun and it is relaxing.

As to the trashy stores at the pavillion and the walmart in PTC, what were you expecting? They are all low-end trashy stores, you get what you pay for. Target too expensive?? Wow.

Join a book club or gardening club that will keep you busy, and it is much more productive than shopping.

music in Marshall's and how 'bout that Rap at the movies? I was in Marshall's the other day (I won't be back) and over the PA a lady spoke in Spanish. After about 20 minuets standing at check out, I asked what she was saying. The clerk, who had poor grammar, advised me that they were talking about if you open up a credit card today you would get 10% off your purchases. I kiddingly asked her why in Spanish and not in our first language, English? She didn’t know how to answer me. I then asked, was the credit card offer not available to us English speaking Americans? I got a rely, “Thank-you for shoppin’with us, has a good day!”

Here we go again, the illustrious rednecks of Fayette county asking for the Mexicans to go, accusing them of every possible thing going bad in their little bubble. Mexicans build our homes and roads, manicure our lawns, pick up the vegetables and fruits for Publix and Kroger, baby sit our kids and clean up our homes.
The best advice I can offer you rednecks is to attend Spanish class and learn to live in a multi-cultural, globalized world, at the same time you enjoy your enchiladas at La Parrilla. That's the future and IT IS NOT GOING AWAY, whether you like it or not. Otherwise, I suggest you move to Idaho or Appalachia, mi amigo.

Yep, I lived in that multicultural scene. The Chicanos spoke "spanglish" after a few years.

I sense that your are of Mexican or Latino descent, so..... where can I get a GOOD Chile Relleno in Fayette County? A Relleno that is made with an Anaheim chile and NOT packed with ground beef?? How about Pork Green Chile?? I'm craving GOOD Mexican food and NOT that crap they serve at El Parillo or La Hacienda.

Also, do you know where I can get roasted green chiles fresh out of the roaster??

btw - my great grandmother was from Chihuahua, Mexico and entered the US illegally and married for a Green Card. She was a ravishing, raven haired Flamenco Dancer who had 5 kids with my great grandaddy. Her maiden name was Garcia - no kidding!!

I'm always trying to find good chile rellenos too, but they never compare to my mother-in-laws. Hers are the best. She is Mexican, though born and raised in the US and doesn't even speak any Spanish, she cooks the best Mexican food ever. Too bad she lives in California, so I don't get to eat it often enough.

You and I are in search of something that is hard to find - Tex-Mex chile relleno. The Rio Bravo in PTC came close but, they fled the scene.

Actually, chile relleno is prepared in a varied of ways. In Mexico City I've had them with pork, beef, chicken, shrimp and different types of chiles. The best, is the breakfast bar at the Hilton in Guadalajara. Now you understand why I have the &#*@$ weight problem of mine. Don't git me started on tamales. Like you, I hate ground beef as a filling. Smiling

When I fisrt came out here in '87 all we had was Del Taco. I had to import all my mexican fixings from California.

Kindred spirits, those of us who crave the Tex-Mex chile relleno. Casa Grande in Buckhead is pretty good and their salsa is great, plus homemade tortillas and chips. Their baracho beans are good too. Rio Bravo was our favorite place, before they left PTC Sad

Sometimes, I'll end up making my own rellenos at home, roasting some anaheims in the oven, peeling the skin and stuffing them with jack cheese. I have a 1940's Mexican cookbook my mom gave me that has a great recipe for chile rellenos and the secret is to dunk them in a tomato based chicken broth, after they are fried, and this 'plumps' up the relleno. The process takes a long time but is worth it, especially while sipping on a Patron tequila margarita.

I also make my own pork green chile but I would love to find a place that roasts anaheims during the chile season, which is late summer. Out west, we used to go to the chile roasting stands and buy loads of the whole, roasted chiles and then freeze them. They would last all winter and I'd make all kinds of soups and chiles with them.

Have you ever had Hatch green chiles from New Mexico? Yum.

If you're from Calif, then you've probably been here (awesome taquito stands!):

I never did the chicken broth exercise. I think I'll give it try. I always cheated as I would add a little Bisquick after folding the yolks into the egg whites. All this talk makes me my want to do a little Tex-Mex meal.

Olvera Street - absolutely. Would always go there for dinner and then over to Chavez Ravine to watch the LA Dodgers. Those were the days.

in Jonesboro on tara Blvd. they have amazing "little" Tlayudas which are kind of like Mexican Pizzas.....mmmmmmm. Never had their relleno's but worth a shot. La Hacienda and La Parrilla aren't THAT bad, at least for here. Maybe I'm just too far removed from my Tucson daze.....THAT was some good comidas.
Very cool about your great grandma....great last name too!

I haven't seen any Mexicans "manicuring" my lawn. I did see them perform shoddy construction of my home. By the way, I'm an undocumented border agent.

What if the Spanish speaking people learn to speak English, since the US is multi-cultural! Hey, now that's an idea! If I wanted to go to Spain, South America, Central America, or Mexico I think I'd need to learn some Spanish. Since I'm just going to Fayetteville, I don't see how it would come in handy! As for that word "Redneck" that people love to throw around. I bet you don't even know where the word originated from. I saw it on the History Channel. It came from West Virginia, back when they were having all the problems with unionizing the coal miners. One group of unionized coal miners came to assist some non-unionized coal miners who were being threatened by the management. To distinguish the two, the unionized miners wore red bandanas around their necks, thus "Rednecks". I must say, I've never once worn a bandana or seen anyone around here wearing a bandana! I think nowadays that means you're in a gang! I mow my own lawn, clean my own house, we built our own house, grow a few vegetables, and never had any kids. When I was a kid, I picked vegetables on a farm in the summer. Could you see any teenagers nowadays picking vegetables, that would be a hoot! Personally, I think the inmates would be a good source of labor for the farming industry. Any way, that's just my opinion, which usually doesn't amount to a hill of beans!

Anyone who is a freeloader is destroying our country. If they can't speak our language, and they aren't paying taxes they need to go.

We are wasting our resources on people who will never give back to our country.

Just got back from the Pavilion in Fayetteville. Went to the Sports Authority to use my $25 off coupon. Got 2 pairs of hiking boots and some socks for vacation. Went by Dick's Sporting goods just to see if we did get a good deal on our boots. They only had one pair of womens boots and they cost more than both pair that we got at the other place. Dick's store was nicer inside, but the prices were too high! I do most of my shopping at the Pavilion, occasionally I go to PTC or Newnan. I'm not driving all over creation just to go shopping.

Manager robbed at T.J. Maxx Saturday
Mon, 06/02/2008 - 11:37am
By: The Citizen

Fayetteville police are investigating the armed robbery of the T.J. Maxx store at the Fayette Pavilion late Saturday night.

The store manager was accosted by two black males as she entered the store’s office just after 10 p.m., carrying with her money she had collected from the cash registers, police said.
The assailants pointed a gun at her and took the cash register money and also money from the store safe and taped the female manager to a chair, police said.

They then left the store through a rear door, and one employee said they say four black males leaving the store after the incident, police said.

The two suspects from the office were described as black males with medium build, one being about 5’6” tall and the other being about 5’10”, police said.

Detectives are actively working the case and pursuing leads. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at 770-461-4441.

We never go out shopping at night. Did you know the manager and the assistant manager of the Pizza Hut in Fayetteville have both been robbed. I didn't read about it in the news, I heard it from them. Both times as they were going outside to take a deposit to the bank. It's been a year or so since that happened. One had a gun stuck in her face. Our home was broken into the first time we lived in Fayetteville back in the late 1980's. Also, while we were building it an electrician and his son went around to a couple of houses, including ours, and stole stuff.

The Avenue is still a fairly nice place to shop, but I agree, the Pavilion has really gone down hill, especially those discounters like Ross and TJ Maxx. And the lines at the cashier are ridiculous. Tuesday Morning is horrible and I wish they would clean up their store. Just junk piled high and it's difficult to look through the piles of stuff, plus broken items, candles that smell bad, outdated food.... gross.

The drive is probably too much for you to endure, but Lenox Mall in Buckhead is still our favorite place to go to get essentials like school clothes and such, plus it's fun to wander in and out of the high-end stores and just look at the latest fashions and trends.

We're headed to the Red Door Consignment shop in Tyrone to get some fun summer clothes for the kids. I hate spending $12.00 for a kid's tank top when I can get it for $3.00 at a second hand store!

Kind of like making a return at wally world. Get the little sticker at the door and go to customer service to stand in line. Get to the counter only to have a lady use her incredibly long but beautifully painted finger nails to ever-so-slowly pick those same stickers off. Ugh!!!!
