Smokey Bones

zoes's picture

My father will be in town visiting and said he wanted to eat out at Smokey Bones. DH says it is closed and has been for a while. Is there a comparable place in the area? I hate to disappoint Dad....

One thing it won't do is disappoint. I forgot about them.

try Fresh Air on US23 in Jackson. Wow is that pig good. Shane's in PTC isn't so bad, he's a local boy from Mcdonough(sic?) MY semi-humble, grumpy opinion.

I never knew what BBQ sauce was until I was grown!
However, my Grandmother canned pork ribs when I was young and they were most delicious.
The only reason that I can think of that people would put that evil sauce onto good meat would be to hide the fat that ribs have, and so you will eat every bite of it!
Between all the fat and the ingredients of the sauce, one should clog the arteries about the third visit. Or start type 2 diabetes!
These so called "wings," covered with just as suicidal, greasy brown liquid, are even worse since there seems to be no limit as to how many some will swallow!

are at Earnest's Market on Tyrone Road. Prices are reasonable and they have the best ribs I have ever eaten.

Speedi Pig -- 85 South -- is not bad. They have pretty consistent high ratings on their health inspection; quick service; great chopped pork at a reasonable price; and it SMELLS LIKE A BBQ JOINT!!

I heard 'Sprayberry's' in Newnan might be another option for BBQ.

We used to eat at Cafe Pig when we first moved here, until we got sick one night. Haven't been back since.

Earnest's off Tyrone Rd. sounds interesting!

Just had lunch there this week. Actually, it was pretty good. I had the pulled pork with steamed broccoli and a baked potato as sides. Everything was nicely prepared (the broccoli in particular was neither over nor under cooked). This was for just over 7 bucks--not so bad.

The only other time I was there, I had taken my carnivorous brother-in-law out to eat. Not wanting him to think me a New Age pansy, I had a rack of baby back ribs--something that I had always avoided. They were superb. I also had a sample of their Brunswick stew--also good.

I'd say they're worth a try.

We just ate there about 2 weeks ago, so I think it is still open.

This used to be our favorite place to eat in PTC but our last visit, and I do mean our LAST visit, was disappointing. The quality of the food has gone down quite a bit, portions are smaller and the prices have been increased. They've changed the menu, taking away many favorite items, like the Cobb Salad, and replacing with items that are cheaper to make, like Nachos. That Cobb Salad was one of the best items on the menu, piled high with bacon, egg and blue cheese crumbles. They replaced it with a salad that has cheaper ingredients like nuts and cranberries (yuck).

Oh, and they changed the ingredients of the mustard-vinegar based BBQ sauce and now it tastes like cheap corn syrup. This was our favorite sauce that they always had on the table. Now, they don't even leave the BBQ sauces on the table and only bring them in tiny dispensers.

I know most restaurants are having to cut back because of the economy and increased transportation costs but it is sad when it starts impacting small communities, like PTC, that have minimal dining choices to begin with. I predict that these changes to Smokey Bones, in PTC, will most likely put them out of business within 6 months because folks just don't want to pay $14.95 for a plate of cheap ingredients. It's more satisfying, and less expensive, to cook at home these days.

I hope you're not disappointed like we were when you take your dad there.

That not so glowing report makes me hesitant to go there. I've been there maybe twice. The first time was wonderful. The second not so much. Is there a better place you can recommend? What about Melears? I've never been there, but it seems to be doing okay as long as it has been around and has history he might enjoy.

Speedi-Pig across the road a little way up 85 is a lot better. Melears is probably the worst BBQ I've ever had.

Again I find myself agreeing with NUK. If they served Kenny Melear's dog slop at the jail, we would have a Federal Court order slapped on the taxpayers.

The best in the county may well be Speedi Pig. The best barbecue is this vicinity is Fresh Air in Jackson. If you go down I-75, don't miss Smoakies in Cordele.

That IS some excellent BBQ. I haven't been there in a long time, and I'll have to get back over there. As another suggested, Cafe Pig in PTC doesn't disappoint either.

Melear's may have subpar BBQ, but they make the absolute BEST homemade sausage....especially the patties and their pancakes make IHOP taste like those political signs that are all over....(or are they). Went to Smokey Bones once about a year ago...even the cole slaw su^@ed. Just another chain. Speedi-pig makes great smoked wings and the rest is decent. Cafe Pig in PTC is hands down the best BBQ in the area though. In my humble?,NJ boy opinion, nothing beats Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse NY (and now in Manhattan too). Just opinionatin'.

I have to agree with you Doc, Cafe Pig is by far the best BBQ joint I've been to. I've had Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago and even Everet & Jones in Oakland, CA. All have a distinct style, but Cafe Pig is just plain awesome smoked beast. Try the full rack with a little James Brown Hot Sauce (African Scotch Bonnet Peppers).

Flint's on Hegenberger was the best. Otherwise it was the one on San Pablo Ave. The server would look you over and decide if the sauce you chose was the right sauce for you. Last I heard the owners sold, and the chain was gone.

Ate at Smokey Bones tonight and it was great. I love the St Louis ribs with the sweet sauce. It seemed much better than the the previous two visits that we endured.

Cafe Pig is the place. It is hands down the best in our area with a selection of sides that can't be beat. BUT, if the next time I go in there and they tell me they are out of banana pudding I promise you that I will go off the deep end and possibly postal. That's three times in a row and no stinking banana pudding. I'm going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the AFL/CIO, the NAACP and the CIA if they stand me up again with no banana pudding. I may even sue them. Yeah, for damages. Yeah. No banana pudding.... no self control. And that's all I have to say about that.

Plus, from now on I'm staying away from the JB Hot Sauce. That stuff just ain't right. I almost filed a claim with OSHA and EPA on that concoction. Bout burned my lips off my face.

Melears? Never again. I think ole Kenny got a special on some of that tainted Chinese Dog food. Sort of reminds me of.... Soylent Green. Does CJ do biz with Melears? Shocked

There is seriously no good bbq in fayette county. The closest is Southern Pit near Griffin, but that's still not GREAT.

Suprisingly, some of the best bbq that I have tasted in this state is in downtown Atlanta.
Daddy D'z http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/3007204/atlanta_ga/daddy_d_z.html

There are other good places, Rib Ranch, Col. Poole's, but they are north of here. Shame on you southside...

Submitted by ptcjenn on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 7:50pm.

I have to agree about Speedi Pig in Fayetteville, they're good. But if you're talking about Atlanta, Daddy D'z is good but how can you not mention Fat Matt's??? I LOVE their sauce.

Drive even further and Col. Poole's in Ellijay ( I think that's where it is) is really good too. It's the place with all the pig 'headstones' out on the hill next to the restaurant.

BBQ is such a subjective thing. To sauce or not to sauce? As they used to say, "Put three Southerners in a room and you will have four different opinions about BBQ!" I will say that "pulled pork" is the only way to go. Anyone who takes a knife to BBQ is committing a sacrilege. Keep the faith.

Even a dead fish can go with the flow.
