I have been trying to figure out why so many former Georgia Democrats of old are now calling themselves Republican. Or Libertarian
I finally figured it out when I read something about why Virginia Republicans were mostly Democrats long ago.
There is a difference in the newly named "liberals" as defined by Limburger, etc., and the democrats of old.
To put what they were in a few words it can be summed up as: the old democrats were moderate to liberal republicans.
The old republicans still hated Lincoln for what he did but were outvoted all of the time with their Poll Taxes; their questioning of certain voters at the ballot box; their selective sharing of fortune with only certain people; and their ability to control labor costs and work rules for democrats.

There are still a few "democrats (Nunn, for instance) who are closet republicans and have found no need to come out as republicans.

There might even be a few "Whigs" around Georgia!
