Sheriff’s race marred by vandals stealing signsTue, 05/20/2008 - 4:06pm

The campaign season is in full swing, with only seven weeks left until the people of Fayette County choose their next sheriff. People understand the important role the sheriff plays in the county, and there is a great deal of interest, and even excitement, surrounding this particular race. The way in which a sheriff will run his department can be predicted in part by the way he runs his campaign. Up to now, the candidates, their campaign staffs, and other participants have appeared to run honorable campaigns. Campaign signs are an important part of a campaign. They increase the public’s awareness of who the candidates are, and for which job they are seeking to be elected. The candidates, campaign staff, volunteers, and supporters spend a lot of energy and effort in talking to property owners and obtaining approval to place the signs. In the last several weeks I have noticed that two candidates, Wayne Hannah and Dave Simmons, have began placing campaign signs at various locations in the county. At many locations I have observed that their campaign signs have been placed near each other. However, when I have driven past these locations again, I have noticed that unknown persons have removed Mr. Simmons’ signs. It is especially disturbing to see a sheriff’s race marred by theft or vandalism of this sort. We depend on the sheriff to set the example for upholding the law, and for creating and maintaining an atmosphere of peace, law, and order. This is key to the quality of life that residents and business owners come to Fayette County to find. I call on the candidates who are running in opposition to Mr. Simmons to set a positive example to their supporters and to others in the county. Let them know that you will not tolerate vandalism, dishonesty, or other acts of lawlessness, now or in the future. The manner in which a campaign is run impacts how citizens view the overall integrity of the government and its officials. I also call on the candidates to make sure your campaign staff and supporters know that you will not tolerate dishonorable acts between now and the primary election day, including the theft or vandalism of campaign signs.
