McIntosh athletic director Steve Cole announced today via e-mail that Brad Campbell will be the new baseball coach at McIntosh.

Campbell has 19 years of head coaching experience. He was most recently the head baseball coach at Carrolton High from 1995-2002.

"Coach Campbell took a few years off from baseball to enjoy watching his sons play in college, but he is excited about this opportunity he now has to lead the McIntosh baseball program," Cole said in the e-mail.

In addition to his time spent at Carrollton, Coach Campbell's baseball resume includes coaching jobs with Cedartown, 1990-1995; Villa Rica, 1988-1990; and Paulding County, 1985-1988.

Campbell was the only coach Cole interviewed for the position.

Campbell was hired two weeks ago to fill the McIntosh football team’s vacant offensive coordinator position.

When Cole hired Campbell, coaching baseball was briefly discussed because, Cole said, he knew then-McIntosh baseball coach Toby Black would be leaving in the near future, plus he was impressed with Campbell's baseball experience. But, when he was hired to coach football, there was no stipulation that Campbell would have to coach both sports.

“I knew that Toby could go at any time,” Cole said. “I was surprised that he got out of coaching so quickly. I was prepared, though, When we were going through the [hiring] process with [McIntosh football coach] Glenn [Griffin], I knew that Brad had baseball experience, and I knew that we would possibly be losing our baseball coach.

“I told Brad that Toby could be gone at any time, and I asked Brad if we would be interested. He said he would talk about it when the time came.”

Well, the time came this week, and Cole turned to Campbell, who accepted the job.

Experience was one of the primary reasons Cole decided to name Campbell as McIntosh’s new baseball coach.

“Coach Campbell’s experience is impressive,” Cole said. “He played in college [West Georgia], and he has 19 years of coaching experience. He has a tremendous amount of experience and enthusiasm. We won’t miss a beat with him stepping in for Toby.

“It will be a seamless transfer.”

Campbell replaces Black, who resigned as McIntosh's coach following the Chiefs' season-ending loss Friday to Jones County in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

Black had served as McIntosh's head coach since 1996.

Wow, that was fast. A new coach hired less than a week after a "surprise" resignation fo the old one? It makes you wonder what went on behind closed doors. Maybe the new coach can pump some life into a sport at the school other than soccer.

Come on baseball fan get off the Field of Dreams. If a recreation program like Little League is the “feeder” to McIntosh, you don’t honestly think the coach is going to be able to compete with the high schools in metro Atlanta that are fed by competitive programs. In fact they probably won’t even be able to compete in their region! The only reason soccer does so well is all the competative programs in the area.

That's not what I would call "not competing" in the region.

First, Coach Black's resignation was not a "surprise" as anyone close to the McIntosh baseball program would know. Second, Little League is by no means the feeder program for McIntosh or Starr's Mill for that matter. Most of these kids leave LL and start playing competitive ball around the age of 12 or 13. You can look at LL's numbers by age and verify this. Finally, as Spyglass wrote McIntosh finished 3rd in the region this year and made the state tournament. Placing 3rd in a region of 9 teams by any definition should be considered competitive in the region.
