Got Questions Ministries:

Question: "What is Islam, and what do Muslims believe?"

Answer: Let’s briefly examine the history of Islam and the beliefs of Muslims.

The history of Islam
The religion of Islam was begun early in the 7th century by a man named Muhammad. He claimed to have been visited by the angel Gabriel. During these angelic visitations, which continued for about 23 years until Muhammad's death, the angel purportedly revealed to Muhammad the words of God (called “Allah” in Arabic and by Muslims). These dictated revelations comprise the Qur'an, Islam's holy book.

The beliefs of Muslims
Muslims, the followers of Islam, believe the Qur'an to be the preexistent and perfect word of Allah. Further, many Muslims reject an English, or any other language, version of the Qur'an. These are translations of the meaning of the Qur'an, which only exists in Arabic.

Although the Qur'an is the main holy book, the sunnah is considered the second source of religious instruction. The sunnah was written by Muhammad's companions about what Muhammad said, did, or approved.

The key beliefs of Islam are that Allah is the only true God and that Muhammad was Allah's prophet. By simply stating these beliefs, a person can convert to Islam. The word Muslim means "one who submits to Allah." Islam purports to be the one true religion of which all other religions have derived themselves from or been created in a mockery of (including Judaism and Christianity).

Muslims base their lives on the Five Pillars:

The testimony of faith: "There is no true god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God."
Prayer: five prayers must be performed every day.
Giving: one must give to the needy, as all comes from Allah.
Fasting: besides occasional fasting, all Muslims must fast during the celebration of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar).
Hajj: the pilgrimage to Makkah should be performed at least once (in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar).
These five tenets, the framework of obedience for Muslims, are taken seriously and literally. A Muslim's entrance into paradise hinges on obedience to these Five Pillars.

Islam compared to Christianity
In relation to Christianity, Islam has several similarities but significant differences. Like Christianity, Islam is monotheistic, but it rejects the concept of the Trinity. Islam accepts certain portions of the Bible, such as the Law and the Gospels, but rejects the majority of it as slanderous and uninspired.

Islam claims that Jesus was a mere prophet – not God’s Son (only Allah is God, Muslims believe, and how could He have a Son?). Rather, Islam asserts that Jesus, though born of a virgin, was created just as Adam – from the dust of the earth. Muslims believe Jesus did not die on the cross. Although denied by Islam, the Trinity and Christ’s redemption on the cross are central to Christianity.

Islam teaches that the Qur'an is the final authority and the last revelation of Allah. The Bible, however, was completed in the 1st century with the Book of Revelation. The Lord warned against anyone adding to His finished Word (Revelation 22:18). The Qur’an, as a claimed addition to God’s Word, directly disobeys God’s command.

Finally, Islam teaches that paradise is gained through good works and obedience to the Qur'an. The Bible, in contrast, reveals that man cannot measure up to the holy God. Only because of His mercy and love can sinners be saved through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Truth
Therefore, Islam and Christianity cannot both be true. One is God’s Word and one is not. The truth has eternal consequences.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world” (1 John 4:1-4)

Maybe you need new specs since you're over 40 because BPR did acknowledge the source (Got Questions Ministries) at the very beginning of her post.

You & $nif surely do worry about others' perceived indiscretions. Perhaps he's explained to you why he plagiarized Jeff, one of those indiscretions that's supposed to cause someone to be banned by Cal. But then he consistently breaks Cal's rule "No personal attacks on private persons" and gets away with it, doesn't he? Puzzled

Denise, am I your obsession du jure? Oh, that's right. It's "du jour." You corrected that for me last time.

If you need a new military man to follow around on the blogs, I know a HIGHLY educated, highly decorated, 30 year veteran triathlete whom, like you, is never able to admit wrong. Consider me The Citizen's "Match.com" guy for frustrated and repressed conservatives.

Isn't that what "Mr. Charley" is? Or stating as a fact (actually lying) that Beaver is friends with David Duke? Or calling OldBeachBear "Ms. Charley"?

I almost never use slang or contrived names; so, maybe I misunderstood (truly, not like Hillary). However, in the context, of your dialogue with Beaver, I concluded that that's what "blacks" call "whites" who they feel are acting "superior" (I believe that's the word you used) to them. If I'm mistaken, please clarify & post your clarification also where you were using this name.

Is the name derogatory, like a "white" calling a "black" that disparaging corruption of the word negro? Wouldn't a "white" PERSON feel similar feelings to what a "black" PERSON would feel when called n*? Is "Mr. Charlie" synonymous with "honky" (honkie, honkey, etc.)?

Sorry. Never heard the term Ms. Charley - let alone used it. I doubt if anyone in Fayetteville or Peachtree City even heard the term Mr. Charley. Never saw it written with 'ie. If you had to look it up to find out if it was offensive or not - then you know it does not have the same affect as the N word. Have a nice night.

You don't even realize how sad you sound.

Hang on to your 'white' pride Ms. Charley.

...................................................

"Never heard" of it -- "let alone used it"???? Laughing out loud

...................................................

Just because I hadn't heard the slur makes it no less offensive -- which is exactly how you meant it. The "blacks" that I associate with don't call me or "whites" names, and I don't use such language myself. I wouldn't expect them to tolerate such behavior (including cursing) from me either.

And it does have "the same affect" [*e*ffect, actually], which is exactly how you meant it. Children result to name-calling when they are unable to respond factually and logically to another's argument, but adults should know better and be able to apologize when they have done wrong. Smiling

Again I ask, Is "Mr. Charlie / Charley" derogatory OFFENSIVE SLANG, or is the dictionary wrong?

Is "Mr. Charlie / Charley" synonymous with "honky" (honkie, honkey, etc.)?

Submitted by Davids mom on Thu, 05/08/2008 - 5:02am.

These are 'code' words used since the days of slavery for 'white' people or 'master'. Not necessarily negative - sometime used as a term of affection (like the N word). {Please don't say the N word was/is not used as a term of affection - we've heard it too many times in sentences like "I love my N...s" and our N . . s would never 'march'.} Back in September I obviously used Ms. Charley because I didn't think the reader would 'understand' Miss Anne. There are 'code' words used by all Americans when it comes to 'race relations'. That's a whole 'nuther' subject.

Why would you use a term that you stated yesterday that you had never heard of(or used)? This sounds like a good answer for Hillary Clinton to try when she gets caught spinning a wild lie, but I don't know if it works here.

What you just said obviously means not only are you familiar with the term and what it means, you were also last October when you used it. You wanted to use some code word and did, along with the bit about "white pride" like it's "bad" to feel pride about your own race.

So if if David's Illiberal Mother is representitive of Obama's unification movement...... then indeed we have some very tumultuous times in front of us in regards to race relations.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. The black community, for the most part, doesn't desire equality. They have a deep rooted hatred and desire to 'put us in our place'. What little hope we have these days...... Sad

Beepo "borrowed" (i.e. stole) the above commentary from a site called "www.gotquestions.org".

It's a fascinating place that has the answers to many vexing questions of the day. Some examples:

1. The Earth is only 6000 years old.
2. Man and dinosaurs co-existed. (Dinosaurs are sometimes refer to as "Jesus Horses" by Southern Baptists).
3. The proper response by a Christian to someone complaining of racism is to tell them to "get over it! God has seen far worse!"
4. Noah was into race-mixing big time, all his sons married women of different races.
5. Before his fall, Satan was in charge of music in Heaven
6. Satan has been cast from Heaven but still has visitation rights when he and God need to confer.

Just who is “Sniffles”?

You said, "Dinosaurs are sometimes refer to as 'Jesus Horses' by Southern Baptists."

("www.gotquestions.org" attributes "Jesus Horses" to the SBC? GQ actually uses the term "Jesus Horses"?)

"The proper response by a Christian to someone complaining of racism is to tell them to 'get over it! God has seen far worse!'"

"Satan has been cast from Heaven but still has visitation rights when he and God need to confer."

(GQ actually says that God "needs" Satan's help?)

What's your SOURCE for those little $niffli$ms? Surely you aren't misrepresenting (LYING) what "www.gotquestions.org" has said, are you?

Then go to the new Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky (just outside Cincy). They have displays that show people hanging out with dinosaurs. I hear it is very impressive and convincing (though the latter may depend upon other things that are already true of those who wind up "convinced.")

And if that fails to convince you, there is always this:

And this sounds like loads of fun:

"Walk through the Cave of Sorrows and see the horrific effects of the Fall of man. Sounds of a sin-ravaged world echo through the room. Finally, see the sacrificial Lamb on the cross, and the hope of redemption."

What do mean by "though the latter may depend upon other things that are already true of those who wind up 'convinced'"?

Your Ph.D. is in philosophy, isn't it, not one of the sciences such as a
Ph.D. in cell biology from Brown University or physics or biochemistry or geology? I do wonder how you are in a position to judge someone who earned one of these degrees as being "harebrained" and having "an IQ equivalent to your average room temperature."

I cannot let this go by. I personally feel completely competent to call this scientific nonsense. A Ph.D from Brown University is no guarantee that your brain has not since become addled. Who brings these people in when it starts to rain? Having a high IQ is one thing, applying it in a logic way is another. OMG, you are doing children a major disservice by presenting these exibits as scientific facts.

muddle's picture

Interestingly, Ken Ham, of the Creation Museum rejects Intelligent Design Theory because he thinks it makes too many concessions to Darwinian naturalism.

He openly concedes that he (and everyone involved there) begins with the axiomatic assumption that a literal reading of Genesis is our guide to understanding the relevant sciences. And so we have a young earth (fewer than 10,000 years), which means that the Big Bang is yet another naturalistic myth. And, of course, the age of the dinosaurs must overlap the age of homo sapiens. So many species; so little time!

(Ham also argues that, unless one takes a rigidly literal reading of the early chapters of Genesis, all of the rest of the Bible is in doubt. In this, he apparently fails to recognize that one may take the Bible to be inerrant without thereby taking this literalist reading of all passages. This would be equivalent to some of the humorless bloggers here taking offense at good-natured jokes because of an overly-literal interpretation of what was never intended to be serious.)[**see note below**]

Intelligent Design advocates do not proceed with any such assumption. Thus, ID is open to the apparent deliverances of contemporary cosmology, which suggest a universe between 15 and 20 billion years of age. And Michael Behe has recently clarified his own stand on common descent. He thinks that the DNA evidence for such is particularly compelling. (Behe thus appears to be a theistic evolutionist.)

Ham and the Young Earth Creationists (a good band name?) thus cut themselves off from at least two potentially compelling theistic arguments. Standard Big Bang theory is "philosophically repugnant" to atheists who were naturally drawn to the older Steady State Theory. As Robert Jastrow once put it in a celebrated essay,

"This is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but the theologians. They have always accepted the word of the Bible: "In the beginning God created heaven and earth." ... [But] for the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; [and] as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

Philosopher William Lane Craig is known widely for his contemporary development of the so-called Kalam Cosmological Argument, originally developed by medieval Islamic philosophers. Craig is also an expert on contemporary cosmology, and appeals to Big Bang Theory in support of his premise that the universe had a beginning.

Big Bang Theory is also presupposed by the so-called "anthropic coincidences"--the observation that the fundamental constants of the universe were "fine-tuned" at its inception, and that it is astonishingly improbable that this should have been so. The fine-tuning is probable on theism and highly improbable on naturalism.

But if you're a Young Earther like the people running this museum, none of this is open to you.

**A recent CNN headline read, "1000 Tourists Stranded on Cruise Ship." I clicked on the link to the article and discoveredc that the actual number of stranded tourists was 987. Now, 987 is not 1000. Should I suppose that the headline was in error? Did it mislead? Of course not. Whether the claim is accurate depends in part upon what the author hopes to accomplish in making the assertion. In this context, saying that there were 1000 people is sufficient for the task. On the other hand, the difference between 1000 and 987 is significant to the guy who is charged with adding up the fare collected from passengers.

I Kings 7:23 relates the dimensions of a "molten sea" that the Israelites created: it was 10 cubits in diameter and 30 cubits in circumference. But this is clearly in violation of the formula: C=pi times the radius squared. So have we an error in the Bible? Only if we think that we must take a rigidly literal reading of all passages--as if it is a passage written by engineers in a peer-reviewed engineering journal. I suggest that those who follow Ham's strategy are committing a similar error.

What makes you qualified (I don't care about your feelings) -- "completely competent" -- to determine the science or the theology or the reasonableness (sanity) of people that you don't even know? They don't need anyone to bring them in out of the rain. Do you need help?

and I still feel competent. Feelings, what else is there? My only suggestion is to change the name of the museum to "Believing is Seeing" to better explain the process used to create this wonder.

I'll have to go visit that tree. I didn't know it was here in GA.

We took our kids to one of the redwood forests in Washington state several years ago, and they were amazed at the size of those gorgeous trees. Those forests are so magical and spiritual....a place where a person can truly connect with god/God.

There is a terrific book, 'The Wild Trees', that I read last year about this group of scientists who studied the ecosystem that lives and thrives in the very tippy tops of those huge redwoods out west.

It is fascinating, and a book would I recommend:

THE WILD TREES

I'll leave that up to you and Main Friends tree huggers. Me, I thank God for the beauty of it all. God created it.Smiling

It is written:

"'As surely as I live,' says the Lord,
'every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will confess to God.'"

So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

You are kinda calm today. Tell me about it, how did you get so calm?

You usually rip people you don't like.

Are you upset trying to find out who the main friend is, well sorry your guess was wrong. Try again.

It must be all that tree hugging I do...

....or:

ZEN

I don't dislike you. I just find you odd. And I don't think a meeting between us would be a good thing.

I like having a preconceived idea of you, and I don't want that shattered. If you meet Hack, I'll get the low-down on you, from him.

Cheers. It's martini hour....

I don't want to speak for Hack but he could also give you the low-down on me. He met my whole family recently!

I don't want you to continue with this delusion, so I hope you two meet up and resolve your 'main friend' mystery.

Plus your main friend has already said you would give them the low down.

I know your main friend would be close by.

Did you think I was born yesterday.Laughing out loud

Now, I know what you look like, how would you know me?

Hack is a little upset that Obama didn't win Indiana.Laughing out loud

Another insult Hack?

Oh, I insulted your Main friend.

All you do is throw insults to Denise, Beaver and me.

Your not as high up as you think you are. People who go around insulting people all the time are insecure. Quiet a few do it on here.

Yeah, you didn't respond to the post of where you knock Denise dad?

Where's that meeting place, oh I scare you.Laughing out loud

Insults mean insecurity. Do you and all of your Main friend, make fun of people all the time?

I have a two places in my class, you need to sign up to learn respect and how to be civil. That's what I teach my kids at school. Better hurry they go fast, before the year is out the class will be full.

Hope you teach your kids respect and how to be civil, they are our future generation.

Didn't your parents teach you and your Main friends how to have respect and civil to people. It doesn't sound like it, the way you talk to Denise, Beaver and myself.

BTW your what you think is charm did not work.

You say you can take my gentleman's word, I won't give out your phone number. Yeah, and pigs fly. Your mad because I didn't fall down at your feet and give it to you.

Hack I forgot to tell you I am not fond of arrogant men.

Hack take your dang pill.Laughing out loud If your out Yardman has some.Laughing out loud

I don't take dang pills and Denise and Beaver we don't have to.

Your mad, putting down Denise dad was mean, Sniffles putting my sister and mom that was mean.

I don't worry, you reap what you sow.
