Armed robbery teens ‘not in school’

Four Peachtree City teens who participated in an armed robbery on the golf cart path near Blue Smoke Park just before Christmas are “not at school” according to a schools spokesperson.

Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said Thursday morning that she couldn’t get into details about the students’ status; all four were enrolled at McIntosh High School.

Fayette County Juvenile Court Judge Tarey Schell confirmed this week that all four were adjudicated delinquent in court last week. He declined to identify any of the suspects nor explain what sentences they received. The judge also refused to say what specific charges they were found delinquent for.

Under Georgia law, a juvenile can be ruled delinquent for committing a crime, for disobeying a court order or for failing to appear in court as required by a citation. An adjudication of delinquency is not similar to a guilty verdict in adult court, Schell said.

The teens’ identities are being protected because they were prosecuted as juveniles. The suspects could have been tried as adults, but District Attorney Scott Ballard said last week that problems with the alleged weapon used in the robbery led to his decision in the matter.

According to police, the male gunman wore a bandanna, took a cell phone from the victim and took items from two other juveniles who were in the victim’s golf cart at the time; the latter two also participated in the planning of the robbery, police said.

The gunman rode away on the back of a golf cart driven by a female juvenile, police said. Before the gunman got away, he punched the victim in the face, police said. The gunman was originally charged with armed robbery, battery and possession of marijuana (less than one ounce). The other three suspects were originally charged with being party to the crime of armed robbery.

It is possible that the juveniles were found delinquent of reduced charges, but Schell declined to say which charges were adjudicated for the four suspects in last week’s trial.

A fifth suspect was arrested recently by police after it was determined that juvenile took part in the incident, police said.

I hope that these juvenile delinquents get prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Too bad they won't be tried as adults. Guess they didn't realize that what they were doing was wrong. First time offenders? pfffft... what a cop-out it would be if they just get a talkin' to and their hand slapped. Oh, that's right. Can't slap the hand. That's abuse and degrading!

What do you want to bet that the reason for the "status" of these predators at McIntosh is being covered up is that they are non-residents of Fayette County and the school booted them out? This stuff always leaks out later - pay attention!
