When the top two teams in the classification meet, it makes sense that it takes over 90 minutes to determine a winner. It doesn't make the game any less intense though for players or fans.

The second ranked Starr's Mill Panthers hosted the top ranked Lakeside-DeKalb Vikings in a Class AAAA quarterfinal match earlier this evening and the two teams remained deadlocked through regulation and two overtime periods. Lakeside-DeKalb won 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance to the state semi-finals.

The loss is particularly heartbreaking for Starr's Mill and their fans as the Panthers dominated play throughout the game, outshooting the Vikings and even having a goal by Gray Phelps halfway through the second half called back due to what many in the stands felt was a questionable offsides call.

In penalty kicks, Gray Phelps, Sam Martin, Colin Mallon and Danny Hojaij connected on their shots. Lakeside DeKalb's winning shot appeared to have been stopped by Starr's Mill goalkeeper Chris Ward but it ricocheted in the net and gave the Vikings the win.

the starr's mill coaches, fans, and players can say anything they want about the game on friday, but it's lakeside who goes on to the semi-finals. it seems that those people above have a hard time facing the loss, and that's probably because they think they're the first team that's ever had success in possessing the ball in lakeside's half and attacking their goal. but really, that's just our style. druid hills, st. pius, and whitewater all thought the same thing. but all of those teams fell victim to the same impenetrable defense and explosive and effective countering abilities that starr's mill couldn't defeat. you'll find that having more possession and shots on goal is not the same as winning the game. and as for the loss being "particularly heartbreaking", due the poor attitude of the losing team and fan body as a whole, this result is particularly pleasing to lakeside's players and fans.
