Let's escape for just a little while with a challenge. I'll list what I think is the best Rock'N'Roll song of all time, then I'll list the song, still Rock'N'Roll, that makes ya want to sing along , and lastly, I'll give ya the best " one hit wonder". Your challenge, if you accept it, is to top them. Judging, of course, starts imediately after I list my favs.GOOD LUCK and have fun!

Have you ever heard the story about how "Credence Clearwater Revival" took their name?
From a country roadside sign that said "Credence Clearwater----REVIVAL"

Bands apparently were named in those days about things "different."

(Sage, your comments about my music taste (below) may not be 100% accurate.)

Sorry to be so late on this but I’ve been out of town. Rereading it today I have to say the main thing that springs to mind is that y’all are really old! Alman Brother’s? Hey, I went to Duane’s funeral and love the band but that was in 1971. Freebird? Great song! Has anyone heard anything from this century?

I constantly apologize to my kids for bringing them into the world at a particular point in time when music reached a new low point in history. But hey, who knew at the time right? Besides they get to listen to all my stuff which is apparently the same stuff you all listen to. Old, old stuff.

However, there is a lot of music out there and there is a tiny percentage that's good. You just gotta hunt for it. To help ease you into modern times, here are some rock and roll songs from this decade:

Feels like tonight – Chris Daughtry
Put you lights on – Santana and Everlast
Sorry – Buck Cherry
Shine – Collective Soul
What it’s like – Everlast
Paralyzed – Fingers Eleven
I Alone – Live
Sex and Candy – Marcy’s Playground
Two Princes – Spin Doctors
Tears on my Guitar – Taylor Swift
Apologize – Timberland
Into the night – Santana and Nickleback
Cliffs of Dover – Eric Johnson
Billie Jean – David Cook

And if you want to watch your kids faint dead away download a copy of California Love by Tupac and Dr. Dre and just casually put it on while they are within hearing distance.

I just looked up the words to "Free Bird" since I didn't remember ever hearing it. Couldn't have heard or understood the words anyway if I had if it is like most.

It is about the worst song (words) I have ever read. I probably have heard it played on the radio but don't remember it by a title or music.

About what I get from the words is a rocker dude is telling the gal he is leaving and she can't go and he certainly can't stay there with her.
He pretends to be some kind of "bird" as the excuse. I suppose she just hopes that she isn't pregnant, and he really doesn't care.

That is it---nothing else! Our NBA players do this game all of the time!

I was sober when I read it and that may be the problem.

I don't suppose the girls will ever learn due to most of them not wanting to learn!

The best Americana songs are by James McMurtry (Lonesome Dove guy’s brother). I’m nominating him in three categories:

Best song about the north Texas southern Oklahoma crystal methamphetamine industry (a specialty category): Choctaw Bingo

It’s about a family reunion. The people attending get stranger and stranger.

Sample verse that can be printed here:

Bob and Mae come up from some little town
Way down by lake Texoma where he coaches football
They were two A champions now for two years running
But he says they won't be this year no they won't be this year
And he stopped off in Tuska at that "Pop's Knife and Gun" place
Bought a SKS rifle and a couple a full cases of that steel core ammo
With the berdan primers from some East bloc nation that no longer needs 'em
And a Desert Eagle that's one great big ol' pistol
I mean .50 caliber made by ******* Hebrews
And some surplus tracers for that old BAR of Slayton's
Soon as it gets dark we're gonna have us a time we're gonna have us a time
Have us a time

Best current protest song (a category out of fashion since the draft ended): We Can't Make It Here Anymore

Best anti-war song: Cheney's Toy

If you happen to like these, check out “Where’d You Hide the Body” and “60 Acres”.

JeffC, as a long time supporter of your father (my mom went to Texas with the Peanut Brigade) and a person that appreciates and enjoys your posts I hate to correct you but...James McMurtry, who I agree is a great artist, is Larry McMurtry's son not his brother.

He plays Atlanta about once a year, most recently at Smith's in ATL.

Why is it that people always have to put music, people and things in a category? I mean, music....in itself is great and so are many people. There are many different genre's and many different people and many different opinions (that's just what they are, opinions and you know what they say about that right?) Anyway, what's the point in expressing derogatory expletives about any one group or song? On the flip side, perhaps there's something you may be lacking in understanding and that could be the reason for your obvious distaste for "freeturd" as you so wrongly (in my opinion) described Lynyrd Skynyrds song "Free bird". I'm truly sorry you feel that way. I love a huge variety of music; from Christian, Rock, country, Easy Instrumentals, Blues/Folk, Bach, Chopin and so much more. I appreciate something different in each genre. I have to admit, I can't seem to find much to appreciate in hateful music such as punk, heavy metal and especially gangster rap. I don't see the point in listening to something that is going to make me feel angry. Anyway, Free Bird has a special meaning for me and perhaps that's part of the reason I love the song. A very good friend of mine; his name was Nick Christof used to hang out and listen to music with myself and my friend "Karen". We were a little younger than Nick, but that didn't matter to him. He was always kind to us. We always played Free Bird and sang out loud, not caring who heard us 10 blocks away! Anyway, Nick was murdered one night...some sorry excuse for a human being shot him in the neck. So, while you may loathe "Free Bird" I will always hold it dear. Isn't it great that we live in a Country where we have the freedom to express ourselves? Hmmm, or do we?

I don't like "Stairway to Heaven" either(ever heard of backward masking?) I do, however, very much enjoy Led Zeppelin cranked up to "11"

You must not have been 16 and living in the south when Skynyrd hit the scene.

I've heard that Free Bird was written as a tribute to Duane Allman. I've never put Skynyrd in the same category as the Allman Brother Band. I think of the latter primarily in terms of their connections with various jam bands, and their incredible instrumentation and improvisation. Skynyrd is a sourthern rock band that I associate with, say, Marshall Tucker or Moilly Hatchet. But I'll still crank up the radio when those open notes of Free Bird come on.

Anyway....

How do you get a Skynyrd fan off your front porch?

Pay him for the pizza.

ANY song by Johnny Winter(please don't add an "S" to his name). But not his studio stuff, I'm talkin' live and in semi-living color. I saw him at the ga dome, circa '94, at the blues-n-barbeque bust. He was playin' an instrumental passage in a song, reached with his right hand to grab a bottle of(gasp)water, and with only his left hand fingering the frets sounded like 3 guys playin', WHAT A RUSH!

Best rock song: "With or Without You" by U2. (Check my choices for "best sing along song" below for worthy contenders.)

Best sing along: "Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol ("Patience" by Guns N' Roses is a close second).

Best one hit wonder: "More Than Words" by Extreme. Other contenders are "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star and "Take on Me" by A-Ha.

Don McLean did have success with at least two other songs so after careful consideration my choice for best one hit wonder would have to go to Scott McKenzie for "If Your're Going To San Francisco". for the rcord, I mostly agree with Muddle when it comes to music.....that being said

Best Rock song: Sugar Magnolia-The Grateful Dead
followed closely by any # of G.D. or A.B.B. songs

Best Live- Again, mostly any Dead tune or Allman's and "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen

1 Hit wonder- has to be Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the sky"

Sing Along- Most older classic Springsteen, U2 or REM....of course. for me The Dead or Allman's is in there too.

BTW- It's Greg KiHn Band not KiLn and Steppenwolf not Stephen Wolf...... which brings me to another fun game.....

MISQUOTED SONG LYRICS! My wife spent MANY years prior to meeting me thinking that the song Radar Love by Golden Earring (one hit wonder anyone!) was called Red Alert.....so that's my entry....GO...

"once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right"
"listen to the thunder shouting, "I AM, I AM, I AM"

"Uncle John's Band"--The Grateful Dead

"The Weight"--The Band

"Fire and Rain"--James Taylor

I'm a big ABB fan having first seen them with Duane in 1971. Snappy, Hutch and Grateful Doc-glad we share musical tastes. Muddle, don't know if you still follow the ABB but in case you don't here is something interesting. 3 or 4 years ago ABB started playing Layla. I've got a couple of live versions and they nail it. Derek Trucks, who is drummer Butch Trucks nephew plays lead on it. Steely Dan is another favorite as well as Van Morrison and the Beatles.

ABB releases about 20-30 live shows a year. Three years ago they did three nights at the Fox and never repeated a song except one. They played Dreams each night with Warren Haynes, Jack Pearson, and Derek Trucks playing the lead one night each.

They're only doing a limited # of shows this summer cause Greg is recovering from treatment for Hepatitis C. No Atlanta date yet.

YES I still keep up with them!

The combination of Derek and Warren is a thing to behold. We didn't see any shows last year, but we saw them twice thre year before--Chattanooga and Atlanta. I see that their playing Red Rocks in August, with Mule playing the following evening. My wife and I drove out to COloroda to see them at Red Rocks in 1999. That evening happened to be Derek's official debut with the band. Good Lord, has he soared since then!

I believe Derek is playing with Santana tonight in Birmingham. My son and his wife are going. Have you seen any of these sets?

That's one of the few I've never seen but want to. Played Chastain last year but I had to miss it. Doesn't do a lot of shows. I understand, despite his talent, that he has a little stage fright. Those that went said it was awesome. Interesting tidbit...no opening act. He started at 7:30 and ended at 9. My kind of show since I'm over 50. Short sweet and to the point.

I'd love to see him at the Fred but he's way too expensive. I'm sure it's over $100,000 a night.
