Whitewater Students host children's field day

A group of students from Whitewater High School are hosting a children’s field day on May 4 to raise funds to build an orphanage in Uganda. The idea to raise funds for children in Uganda, who have been left homeless due to civil war, the HIV/Aids epidemic and malaria, was born after some students had watched a documentary film in one of their classes about the plight of these children.

One of the students, Sara Crawford, then contacted the Ugandan Orphanage Relief Fund, a non-profit charitable organization, based in Chicago, Illinois, to see how she and her friends could make a difference in the lives of these ill-fated children. She designed a T-shirt, then with the help of the school administration and her friends, organized a T-shirt sale first at Whitewater High School, then moved on to Fayette County High School and Georgia College and State University. Nearly 500 T-shirts have been sold.

This group of students then decided on their next fund-raiser project: a children’s field day, aptly called Children for Children, which will take place on Sunday, May 4, behind Whitewater High School, between 1:30 and 5 p.m. The high school students have organized over 15 field events for children grades K-5 to include prizes, clowns, magicians, food and drink. There will be a nominal entrance fee of $6 per participant.

I must admit that I am Sara's aunt in Alabama, but I just HAVE to say that I am so very proud of her! Now a days when so many kids are into drugs, and trouble, and lives going no place, and then you see one that has made such a mature effort to help a needy group! No one pushed her into it- she just did it on her own!
I am so pleasantly amazed, and so very proud of her! I think she is setting a standard that many kids can follow. An example to show that even at this young age, one can make a REAL difference in the world, and in the lives of those who really can use the help! It's not all about the typical teen age things that make them happy such as music, movies, shopping- it also a real "feel good" to help others! Gosh I am proud of her! Keep it up young lady!

I am proud to have such positive young people in our community. We will be there.
