County begins taking land for bypassTue, 04/29/2008 - 3:46pm

For the first time in recent memory, the Fayette County Commission voted Thursday night to proceed with condemnation of property for a public works project. The vote, according to interim County Administrator Jack Krakeel, will help speed up the process for building the West Fayetteville Bypass. “Once we have all the property in hand, we anticipate to start grading in two weeks,” he said. The bypass is expected to be built in three phases. The first phase starts in the Huiet Road/Lester Road area in the geographic center of the county and proceeds north across Ga. Highway 54 and ties into Sandy Creek Road. The second phase extends from Sandy Creek Road to Ga. Highway 92 in the area of Westbridge Road in north Fayette. The funding for both phases comes from $50 million in local funds. The final phase begins in the Huiet Road/Lester Road area and extends south to Redwine and requires state and federal funds to complete. At a meeting in March, Commission Chairman Jack Smith said there was no intent to four-lane the bypass or Sandy Creek Road, but said the county was acquiring right-of-way for four lanes in case future commissions saw the need to increase the lanes. Completion for the project is expected to take 18 months. login to post comments |
