Feather-fluffing

The Reverend Wright explained about what he has been saying in church that has many upset on TV this week.

He also explained about Obama saying that the reverend said somethings that he didn't agree with.

Here is the explanation: Obama is a politician and I am a preacher. Obama must say what a politician must say, and I must say what a preacher must say!

As to the sermon in question, the reverend said he was misunderstood, that the things were said on TV, etc., out of context, and that it would take scores of years for most white people to fully understand how the black churches operate!

Now, I have to say that the reverends speech on TV this week was clear, calm, no shouting, no heavy breathing, no one patting him on the back and saying yes, yes.
I understand most of that preaching culture---some white churches do similar things.
What I don't understand is why must a church audience be excited into thinking that God should damn the USA, etc., etc., etc. And then deny you said it in that context! All just because whites don't understand where he is coming from. Maybe they don't--maybe he meant damned for one instance only, I don't know, but he should tell us which.
Hey, you can only come from one direction no matter who the audience is.
Frankly, I think that sort of preaching is deliberately done to keep the hackles raised.
I realize that some heritages do structure sentences and even words differently than others and can have two or three meanings---take the one you like!

I could understand all of this controversy if Rev Wright was the one running for office. My opinion is that you say that you don't want to hear what he has to say and move on.

can do for you, but aisk what you can do for your country.

According to reverend Wright this is what Jack Kennedy said in 1961.

Mr. Wright wanted to know how to spell aisk!
His comments were in reference to the way black kids were speaking, according to whites.

There are poorly speaking whites, no doubt, but this example was very weak and can only hurt the reverend.

There is no defense for such talk as some of us have as far as butchering the English language. A good offense to teach them better would help. Midwestern states in general do an excellent job teaching their students to speak correctly, regardless of their socio-economic status.
Why not mimic that?

Listen to the 'words' in context.

I think that you are agreeing with the reverend concerning his sermon that has caused controversy.

So, I will answer your comment from that standpoint---or do you have several other pages to throw in to put the six words you printed "in context?"

When ever I have to listen to a 1-3 hour sermon in it's entirety, that has 6-8 different interpretations within it, to understand anything about it, I think maybe that is just a way to say what you want to say somewhere in the middle of the sermon and then cover it up with other "context." Those listening will of course get the intent!

Muddle is a master at this! (I mean a PhD.).

What Dollar meant:

I can never understand anything anyone ever says if it contains more than a sound byte. Thus, I always assume that the reason why everything sounds nonsensical to me is that the person is talking nonsense. The truth of the matter is that I am a bear of very small brain.

You cleared it up for me.
If you were ever to just write a "sound byte" I think your head would explode!
Oh, it wasn't "nonsense" that bothers me, it is the obvious "feather fluffing" as I like to call it.

I'm with President Harry Truman who once said he wanted to hire a one-handed economist adviser and get rid of the "on the other hand" crap! They have yet to find one!

Say what the heck you really mean after YOU consider all of the "on the other hand."

OK.

Dollar is an idiot.

Thank you. Now I know where you are without the fluffing!
I think I know a lot you don't, and you know a lot I don't. Mine is simply more usable, more quickly!

What I am saying is 'listen' and make up your own mind. The sermon is not 1 to 3 hours long. I am saying that too many intelligent people have allowed themselves to be swayed by a carefully crafted segment taken out of context from a sermon delivered the week of 9/11. No one left that church on that Sunday saying 'Down with America' and "Hate Whitey'. But enough. Minds are made up.

Then it would be the first black sermon that I have ever heard that wasn't 1-3 hours in length in its entirety!
How do you know no one left the church saying anything?
The carefully crafting, as you said, was done by Wright!

How many non-Baptist black congregations have you visited? Broaden your knowledge base. All blacks are not alike! 'No-one' is qualifying - so I'll say 'those who were there and interviewed' didn't leave filled with hate towards 'white' people or America.. . including the white people in the audience. Take a chance - and listen. If the sermon doesn't change your mind about the meaning of the 'snippets' - at least you made a decision based on your own knowledge - not what the media wanted to portray.

Sorry - I'm wasting my time. You can't make up or change what you don't have (mind)
