A baby is a punishment.

Children are a gift from God. Ps.172:3
Behold, children are a gift (heritage, inheritance) of the Lord; The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. 5How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate." (FAMILY) Building and security are essential for a family.
The Lord blesses His people with children and so, He builds your homes. Also, He is the One you should ask to protect your families, to keep them safe and secure.
The NASB says here that children are a gift from the Lord.
I like that translation because it reminds me of another gift given by the Lord: eternal life. In both cases, life is a gift from God.
As with the earlier verses, as Christians you are to trust the Lord with your families. You are to lift them up to God, pray for them and seek His will in their lives.
It is one of the most difficult things, sometimes, to trust the Lord with your children, when your children are hurting, sick, or in danger.
Children are a blessing, to those who build upon the Rock of Christ, who trust in the Lord to keep them

Blessings can be burdens

In our present society the truth is children are made to be burdens but not by the parents who love them. I believe the statement being made by Obama was to shed light on the fact that too many young single mothers have a hard time making ends meet. They have a hard time getting good pre-natal care, it is nearly impossible to get affordable child care so it not the child that becomes a burden rather all the obstacles faced by having them.

It is our societies systems that need to be challenged not the religious beliefs on who's children are more worthy of being cared for and protected.

Obama doesn't think children are a burden, he just doesn't want his daughters to face the up hill challenge of trying to raise one in a society that doesn't provide support. It is time for change.

The Role of "Society"

Raising any child is a challenge, it can be a blessing if the parents want to make sacrifices for their decision to have a child.

"Society" didn't hold a gun to their heads and tell them to procreate, that is a choice they made on their own. They need to live within the means of a one "bread winner" household if child care is too expensive.

Don't expect the rest of "society" to be thrilled with or support your lack of planning or foresight.

That sounds like you're talking about accepting personal responsibility! Some sure don't want to hear about that. It's a lot easier to just blame the faceless "society" for not supporting them regardless of what choices they made.

Has it, or maybe I should say, can it, occur to the right-wingers that Iraqis, Palestinians, Iranians, Muslims, Hindus, and all other peoples other than professed christians, feel the same way and want the same thing for their children? It is so heartbreaking for me to see the suffering of the Iraqi and Palestinian people, especially the children. Reply to this and tell me where your rightousness comes from. Tell me why you intend to vote for another war mongering maniac, and especially tell me why I no longer hear about Jesus being the Prince of Peace.

Seriously though, why is this such a big deal to the male species anyway? Virgins? It just seems to make more sense that if you were going to be in heaven after you blew yourself up, you would want to be with women who...well...knew what they are doing... right?? Virgins just don't know the ropes, so to speak, and they are so...needy. I mean really, think about it. After a hard days work of blowing themselves up wouldn't they rather visit a brothel with experienced hookers?

There is so much drama involved with 'deflowering' a virgin, and 72 at that! Gosh! There would be tears and alot of hand-holding and then they'd probably want to cuddle ALL night!

It's always been proof to me of just how insane suicide bombers really are. 72 virgins? Why virgins and why 72???!!!! One is like tough enough and 72 would be ridiculous. Who came up with the 72 number anyway? Same goes for the polygamy types.....you really want more than one wife? Crazy!
