Police chase, arrest gun-waving trio in PTCMon, 04/21/2008 - 1:17pm
By: Ben Nelms
Following a multi-car police pursuit down Ga. Highway 54 that ended near Holy Trinity Catholic Church, police arrested three young men Sunday afternoon related to the discharge of an Air-Soft gun that looked like a “solid black gun with a big barrel” at an adjacent motorist at a stoplight. Arrested in the incident was a 15-year-old Atlanta male charged with pointing a pistol at another, disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm, according to Fayetteville Police Chief Steve Heaton. Also arrested were 17-year-old Fayetteville resident Kelvin Bernard Hunt and a 16-year-old College Park male, both on charges of disorderly conduct, Heaton said. Heaton said the air-soft gun shoots round, plastic projectiles powered by compressed gas and is sometimes used as a practice weapon for law officers. The orange tip had been removed from the gun, causing it to appear to be a real weapon, said Heaton. "If you take the orange tip off there's no way for officers or anyone to know it's not real. The results could be tragic," Heaton said. "Parents need to be mindful of what their kids are doing." Fayetteville resident Jimmy Poole called 911 after the weapon was pointed in his direction while he was stopped at the traffic light at Hwy. 54 and Grady Avenue in Fayetteville. That call, along with a description of the vehicle, led moments later to police from Fayetteville and Peachtree City and deputies from the Fayette Sheriff’s Office corralling the vehicle in Peachtree City at the traffic signal at Hwy. 54 and Walt Banks Road. Before it was all over, eight patrol cars were blocking the Walt Banks Road intersection and the three men in the gold Grand Am were in handcuffs in the back of Fayetteville patrol units. Interviewed at the scene, Poole said that while waiting at the traffic light in Fayetteville he had turned in the direction of the car upon hearing loud music coming from it. Poole said the driver turned to a passenger in the rear seat, after which the passenger held up a handgun, stuck it out of the car’s window and pointed it in Poole’s direction. Poole told police he heard a couple of pops coming from the direction of the car. “It was a solid black gun with a large barrel,” Poole said. The vehicle turned on to Grady Avenue, but came back onto Hwy. 54 minutes later, headed toward Peachtree City. Poole saw the vehicle after dropping his son’s friend off a short distance away, and he began following it. Poole was still on the phone with 911 giving a description of the event and the vehicle. Poole said that as he entered Peachtree City, traffic was backed up east of Walt Banks Road and blue lights were flashing. Poole pulled into a nearby bank parking lot where he was interviewed by Fayetteville police officers. He walked with officers to the stopped vehicle while the three men in handcuffs sat in the rear seats of Fayetteville Police cars. After the car — displaying a Fayette County license plate — was towed and the three men were taken back to the Fayetteville City Jail, Poole reflected on the scary incident at the traffic light. “I was just going to drop off my son’s buddy and get some brakes at Auto Zone,” Poole said. “I guess things can change in a minute.” login to post comments |
