FAYETTE COUNTY?

Wow, after a few days of reading these entries, there is no doubt that there are some true racists in Fayette county. This blogosphere provides provides the anonymity needed so that one can show his/her true colors. However, as a black Fayette countian I have a different perspective on a few things. Having been in this wonderful county since the early eighties, I have seen growth that has brought with it many changes. As we began to grow, Fayette county was known to be the number 1 county to live and to raise and educate children. That being said, I hope that this Clayton county situation works itself out. Our county has already began to change due to the fact that Clayton county residents insist on crossing the border to do their shopping. If Fayette county were to endure an unwanted influx of Clayton county residents seeking an accredited school, Fayette county will, in a matter of time turn into Riverdale, Riverdale road, Jonesboro road, etc. If you think you see For Sale signs now, in a year or so there will not be a true Fayette countian left.

There are racist in every corner of the world. Nothing is going to change it.

I congratulate you on your willingness to see the truth on the Clayton County situation. If you moved here in the 80s, you'll probably agree things have declined around here lately.

I won't let my wife drive to the Fayette Pavilion alone. The ride to
Atlanta used to be a breeze too.

That's an interesting euphemism.

If we could see ourselves as others see us, we would vanish on the spot.

You've expressed an interesting point of view from someone who has been here for sometime. Not all of Clayton County families are so unlike those here in Fayette. The first family publicized for using a false address from Clayton - actually lived in Hampton - and they were 'white'. The price of homes in Fayette is a natural barrier for keeping 'unwanted/unlike 'us' - undesirables - regardless of color - out of Fayette County. Fayette County schools are achieving because: outstanding faculty; interested/involved parents; supportive community. As the economy changes, more mothers may be going to work - and not have the time to volunteer in their community school; teachers who live some distance from their workplace may opt to teach closer to 'home'. Let's hope that the involved parents in Clayton County can succeed in ousting their current School Board; achieve the changes for accreditation - and build a credible school district for their children. What some refuse to realize is that 'blacks' are already here in Fayette. They have the same interest in protecting property values, school system, and safe shopping areas as 'whites' do. Not all who seem unaware of this are anonymous. Many are keeping an eye on a certain 'lawyer'. His views would never be acceptable for one in the DA's office or a judgeship. He has a right to his opinions as a private practice attorney.

Point taken DM. Having experienced my k-12 years here, it is just disappointing to envision such a catastrophe as would occur if even a few of the CC population were to relocate to our school system. I will be the first to say that my comments could be taken as sounding territorial, even elitist. However, I do so out of my love for Fayette county; out of the fear that due to that incompetent school board next door, we may have to contend with a class of people that will drag our system down, resulting in black and white residents leaving.

I do hope that CC does pull it around. I did read in the AJC that a meeting held yesterday had a very dismal attendance including elected officials.

I read that article also - and I'm not familiar with the 'law' here in Georgia - but I'm amazed that these parents hadn't started a petition a long time ago regarding the incompetence of this school board and calling for a recall. It's my understanding that a 'new' school board is one of the requirements of accreditation. Has a list of criteria been published? September is here - when one thinks about putting meaning strategies in motion to effect change.

You are most right; there isn't much time left and much needs to be done.
