Fayette County deputies arrested four burglary suspects Thursday afternoon after they sped away from a Fayetteville police officer investigating a burglary call, police said. The sometimes harrowing chase along Hwy. 54 into Clayton County lasted for 25 minutes before the suspects pulled over in the parking lot of a strip club on Metropolitan Parkway in Atlanta, said Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. By the time the suspects peeled away from the officer at the Cornerstone Chevron gas station, the initial report was that their van was reported stolen and the driver had a warrant out for his arrest, Hannah said. Fayette County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ward and deputies Kevin Kahl and Mike Helton got behind the van as the pursuit continued along 54 West into Clayton County, with the suspects’ vehicle passing other eastbound vehicles, forcing some westbound vehicles off the road to avoid collisions, Hannah said. The pursuit winded up Tara Boulevard, down Old Dixie Highway and along a number of other roads before the suspects’ blue passenger van pulled into the parking lot of the Gold Rush strip club, Hannah said. The driver ran away on foot and was apprehended by Clayton County police officers who joined the pursuit, Hannah said. The other three passengers, two men and one woman, didn’t have time to get out of the car and were apprehended right away, Hannah added. In addition to assistance from Clayton County’s police and sheriff’s department, the Forest Park police department also assisted in the operation, Hannah said. Hawk 1, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office helicopter also took part, though it had to back down briefly once nearing Hartsfield airspace before it got clearance to proceed from aviation authorities, Hannah said. The driver was identified as Timothy James Parker, 38, of Union City, Hannah said. In addition to charges from the initial incident that might be filed by Fayetteville police, the sheriff’s office plans to file several traffic charges including reckless driving and improper passing violations for the part of the pursuit that took place inside the county limits, Hannah said. login to post comments |
