Clayton Co. students

I understand the concerns of the taxpayers and can relate. Would the concern be so great if Clayton Co families paid to attend schools in other counties? The students in that County are being punished for the poor decisions of arrogant adults, which is just as unfair to them as taxes are to us. It just seems that some of these posts are more concerned with the upbringing of the children.

You mean the whole $8,000 per student per year? Well sure, that would be fine with me. If the parents care enough to spend $8k they probably care enough to help them get good grades and teach them to dress and behave like students instead of thugs. Best estimate would be that Fayette would get about 100 new paying students. Welcome them.

Great idea! Except the bleeding heart liberals won't let it happen because it discriminates against the many that don't have $8,000. They have to get a government handout or their rights are being violated. This stupidity started with FDR and was then perfected by LBJ (and he himself actually realized that). It is a sorry state of affairs when even those that want to do the right thing can't - because of the system we have created.

The county has been in slow decline since the 70's. The crap hit the fan in 95 - 96 when Techwood homes was torn down for the Olympics and a majority of those folks were relocated to Clayton county. I know good people who live there now and who have lived there. It is just a numbers game. To many bad outweigh the good.

I think a lot of Fayette residents are afraid that a big influx of Clayton Co. students into our school system will bring an influx of Clayton Co. problems with them. Face it--Clayton Co. is a MESS. It's not just the school system.

Some bloggers have mentioned the belief that parents who are involved enough in their children's future to move to Fayette county just for the better school system would probably be the cream of the crop, and I don't doubt that's probably true. For those families, the welcome mat should be out. But a big influx of potentially hundreds of students from Clayton county would surely water down the quality of the school system here, at least in the short term.

A couple of years ago, we took in a number of kids who were uprooted by Hurricane Katrina. They were generally behind the local kids academically, and it took a while to assimilate them, with some difficulty. Absorbing ten times more kids from Clayton county would be far more difficult, and that difficulty would have nothing to do with funding. Funding would likely also be a problem, but any way you look at it, the probable result would be a lowering of the quality of public education in Fayette County for the foreseeable future.

Clayton Countians are being justly punished for not being vigilant in who they elected.
