Another side to Rev. Wright/Patriot

We're more than just 'sound bites' This is not shared to change anyone's opinion of this man - just to give more information.

In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,' gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.

In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)

The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery.

For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation.

What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.

While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/ sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.

Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the country?

After leaving the service of his country, the young African-American finished his final year of college, entered the seminary, was ordained as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a large church in one of America's biggest cities.

This man is Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retiring pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.

While his service is commendable, it in no way negates his "God damn America" rants and Obama's looking to this hate-monger for mentoring and spiritual advice.

Where are Wright's positive comments about America? I haven't heard any. So who's the "real patriot"? Whatever patriotism he might have had, he let hate and bitterness consume it.

(BTW, President George W. Bush served in the Texas Air National Guard.)

Sen. McCain was a POW but has never publicly (or privately that we know of) cursed America. So, if the standard is "actually sacrific[ing] something" rather than "merely talk," then John McCain is your man.

The good scum bag Rev. can’t be bad because, He served in the Military, just like that poor black kid in Alabama that robbed and killed the college student and then pistol whipped a 70 year old woman. His mom said the Iraq war caused him to do it.

Give me a break; scum is scum.

They both are scum.

So, let me get this straight. You see the quite accomplished Rev. Wright, military veteran, lauded and honored; the man who has had counsel with past presidents; the man who has been supported by people who actually know him (such as white biblical scholar Martin Marty); the man who lead a church of thousands of law abiding, benevolant people; you see him as "just like" the accused murderer of the Auburn coed?

Wright is far worse; this man has a good education he knows the meaning of his words.

The ex Marine that killed the college student was just a stupid run of the mill street thug.
For some reason you seem to want to give a free pass to anyone that served in the military.

Wright can’t be all that bad he has a couple of token white preacher friends that like him and he served in the military.

The man preaches hate toward white people plain and simple. I’m sure you being a black man wouldn’t find one word of his sermon offensive he doesn’t preach hate toward blacks.

Take off your aviator glasses your seeing everything way to dark.

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - A jury convicted an iconic civil-rights figure of incest Thursday after concluding that he had sex with his teenage daughter 15 years ago. The Rev. James L. Bevel, 71, a top lieutenant to Martin Luther King Jr. who also helped organize the Million Man March, faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced.

But he’s ex military and was a top lieutenant to Dr. King so he can’t be all bad I guess he’s just a misunderstood scum bag I wonder what church he attended.

Dang at least old scum bag Jimmy Swaggart got himself a ho instead of doing his daughter.
