Son of "of this and that"...

With all the hoopla right now about the schools here in Fayette County and, of course, our neighboring county, I got to thinking about school governance and, what some of you call, our "government schools" system. It is really taking a beating these days and our representatives don't seem to be too concerned about that fact. Oh, we get alot of lip service, around election time, but we keep electing the same old guys to drive up to Atlanta, and represent the interests that are driving the educational systems downward.

Then I got to thinking about how if we send the wrong guys to represent us, then that is more a statement about our decisionmaking skills as citizens than about the sorry state of our schools. If we truly want to make a difference in the lives of our children, then we would try to leave them better prepared to make intelligent decisions. (This, of course, is the function of the parent, but that is a topic for another discussion...schools should only really be in the business of re-enforcing parental teachings, and expanding scope of knowledge)

And THAT you do at the school level...actually the teacher.student level. So for us to truly change how our government governs, we have to BECOME the government! The school board is elective and, as such, under our control as voters. Yes, there is a State School board and Superintendent, but is is much easier for us to change at the local level. If we think that citizenship education should be a major part of the school's mission, then "Let it be so!". I will murder the latin, with profuse apologies. vox populi, I believe "the voice of the people".

Rather than running away from the "government schools", why not change them into what you want them to be? Keep the faith.
