Elmer Gantry
Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons made this fictional preacher, of Sinclair Lewis's novel, come alive on screen in the 60s. The Sister Falconer character may have been intended to emulate Aimee McPherson and other female preachers of the day.
Anyway, the intent of the novel was to indicate that one could be "religious." and at the same time a fraud. Just a way to make a good living!
The discussion lately about what goes in in churches, other than worship, and especially the predominantly black churches, reminded me of that old movie.
The "acting out", even in church, is important in the black heritage it seems.
If you noticed in the clips now being shown often of the Reverend Wright, Obama's preacher, someone will on occasion run up behind the preacher and pat him on the back for a statement he just uttered, also there will be one or more "directors" on either side of the stage, seemingly directing responses desired.
There is also constant shouting from the audience, who generally stand and make incredible motions and signs.
They have every right to do any and all of these things of course.
It is just, in my opinion, not taken seriously by other races when the words spoken are designed to intimidate other races, and criticize them for the current condition of the black population.
There are also many white churches and other organizations who preach and support the same kind of provocation toward other races.
Maybe another 7000 years is needed to improve this situation!
If only Adam and Eve could have made us all either white, or black only.
