PTC planning fun for 50th birthday

In 2009 Peachtree City will turn 50, and plans are already underway for a special celebration.

One potential signature event would be a golf cart parade designed to break the world record as determined by the Guinness World Records company, City Leisure Services Director Randy Gaddo told the Peachtree City Council last weekend at its retreat.

Doing so will be difficult logistically due to the sheer number of carts needed, but its possible they may be driven three astride down a section of Peachtree Parkway. The location must be fairly centralized because of the limited driving range of many golf carts which are battery operated.

In addition to the possible golf cart parade, the main event to celebrate the city’s birthday will be the Touch the World festival that’s hosted by the Peachtree City Rotary Club. The festival had its first run in October, with the Dragon Boat races as its signature event.

The races featured teams representing local business entities and groups competing against each other with 20 rowers each boat in Lake Peachtree. The event is also about showing off different cultures, and so music and dance entertainment were also provided in addition to food to keep festival goers happy.

For the 2009 event, its possible that Radio Disney will host the event, providing emcees, games for kids and hosting the event, Gaddo said.

The city already plays host to 45 different special events throughout the year, so there’s no plan to add another one to the mix just for the city’s birthday, Gaddo said. Instead the city will design a logo that would be approved by council and then used by each individual group that hosts each of those events in recognition of the city’s 50th birthday, he added.

Shouldn't the city's 50th birthday be a bigger deal? We might have 45 different special events, but there is really only 1 that gets the whole community involved- the 4th of July parade. We should have more festivals, free concerts in the park by city hall or movie nights at the amphitheater (with new movies and not the Nutty Professor). Shouldn't this be something the tourism association should do? Actually, what does the tourism association even do? Shouldn't they be planning festivals, community events and sporting events? Instead they are wasting their time on the The Fred, which could practically run itself with the right management. So what exactly are those people getting paid to do over there?
