Fayette County’s boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Fort Valley State for their Class AAAA quarterfinal basketball games on Saturday and both teams won, placing them in the final four at Gwinnett Arena this week.

The Lady Tigers outlasted Northside, Warner Robins 43-42 to reach the state semifinals, while the boys defeated the Jonesboro Cardinals 45-43. Both the boys and girls led at the half in what were closely contested matches throughout.

Sandy Creek’s girls played their Class AAA quarterfinal game at Mt. Zion, Jonesboro and lost to Monroe Area 56-49. The Lady Patriots trailed the Lady Canes 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but a 12-1 run in the second quarter helped Sandy Creek to a 27-16 lead at the half. Monroe Area’s defense stepped up in the second half, as did their shooting. They scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and sealed the victory with some big shots and free throws at the end of the game.

Morgan Toles finished with 18 points for Sandy Creek, while Kenneshia Rich added nine.

Cuincy Carruthers led the Tigers with 14 points, while Noel Johnson added 11 points and 15 rebounds. Brandon Boykin electrified the crowd with some slam dunks on his way to 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
