No country for old bigots

Larry Elder's picture

Bookings to promote my new book, “Stupid Black Men: How to Play the Race Card — and Lose,” have been difficult. Many media outlets — television, radio, magazines — flatly turn me down, because they find the title “offensive.”

The unwillingness to offend, to avoid the appearance of racism, proves one of the main points of my book — that white racism no longer poses a significant problem in American life.

A man’s 7-year-old son spotted his dad’s recently purchased copy, and asked him, “Why is the book called ‘Stupid Black Men’?” Dad wrote and asked me how to answer.

“Well, in writing,” I responded, “sometimes authors say one thing when they mean something different. Some call this ‘tongue-in-cheek’ or ‘irony’ or that the writer is being ‘coy.’ All these funny words mean that the writer really means something very different from what, at first, it seems like he is saying.

“You know how sometimes I’ll look at my watch and say, ‘Wow, time really flew by.’ I don’t mean my watch grew wings like a bird and flew away. I mean that we were having so much fun, it got really late, and I didn’t know it was almost time for dinner!

“You know how Mommy stands at your bedroom door when you haven’t made your bed, and she says, ‘My, this sure looks clean and neat’? She really means, ‘You get in here and clean your room!’

“Suppose Mommy took a picture of your messy room, wrote on the picture ‘My Child’s Clean Room,’ and taped it to the bathroom mirror. Why would she do that? Mommy is trying to get you to do the right thing by showing you how bad your room looks when it’s messy. She wants to get your attention by saying one thing, when she means something different. This book got your attention and got you to ask me about it, didn’t it?

“Now if you read the book, you would find that the book is not really calling black people — or any other group — ‘stupid.’ It says don’t let people confuse you when they say things that are not true. What kinds of things? Things like, ‘Most people are out to get you because you are black.’ Or, ‘Because you are black you can’t do well in life no matter how hard you work.’ Or, ‘White people are really mean to black people.’

“Those things used to be true a long time ago, but they are no longer true. The book is saying life is good. So don’t let people treat you like you are stupid — and make you angry and unhappy with life — by saying things about you, about other people, and about our country that are not true. The book says, ‘Think for yourself. Believe in yourself, work hard and enjoy life. You are not stupid. So don’t let people treat you as if you are.’”

Dad wrote me back and thanked me.

I recently flew to New York to promote the book. I met a lady who described herself as a) an actress, b) performing in Santa Monica, a hyper-liberal town next to Los Angeles, and c) Jewish. Probably not a Reagan Republican, I thought.

Actress: Why are you going to New York?

Me: To promote my new book.

Actress: What’s it called?

Me: Well ... let me first tell you about the book, and then I’ll tell you its title.

Actress: Fine.

Me: White racism no longer poses a major problem in America.

Actress: Really?

Me: You mean, really — that’s what the book is about? Or really — that I actually believe that?

Actress: Both.

Me: “Black America,” if a separate country, would rank No. 16 of the top countries in the world, as to GDP; and the black middle class continues to thrive, an advancement that preceded affirmative action. But Hillary Clinton, before a black audience, accused the then-Republican Congress of being run like a “plantation.”

Actress: I see.

Me: Why do Democrats say things like this? Because without that monolithic black vote — 90 to 95 percent at the presidential level — the Democratic Party cannot win. Democrats have not carried the “white vote” since the ‘60s.

Suppose 70 percent of Jewish children were born outside of wedlock; that the prison population were 50 percent Jewish men; that Jewish urban high schools had a 50 percent drop-out rate; and that 25 percent of Jewish young men — late teens or early 20s — had criminal records, meaning in jail, on parole or on probation. And suppose that the so-called “Jewish leaders” blamed this on anti-Semitism. How would you feel?

Actress: I would resent it.

Me: Now, let me tell you the title. It’s called “Stupid Black Men: How to Play the Race Card — and Lose.”

Actress: Fantastic title.

"The unwillingness to offend, to avoid the appearance of racism, proves one of the main points of my book — that white racism no longer poses a significant problem in American life."

Larry Elder

What Larry says is one of the "main points" of his book is flat wrong. If any of you have seen case studies on apartment leasing, loan interest rates, crime reporting of identical activities by white vs black perps (as seen on "What would you do"), race very often plays a factor. From overturned law cases by DNA evidence (over 200 to date with wrongly decided cases being overwhelmingly white victim and black accused) to high interest rates simply because of one's race, racism does play a part in this country of ours. I don't use it as an excuse, but it cannot be denied.

On the program "What would you do", an ABC show, they staged white youths vandalizing a car while the black actors for the comparison study slept in an adjacent car. More 911 calls were made on the sleeping black boys than on the white kids spray painting the car. The white actors playing vandals, black actors sleeping, and production staff were all incredulous. I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it. A guy made this 911 call:
"Some black kids are laying in a car at """ park. They look like they're going to rob someone." Meanwhile, the white actors were actively spray painting a car in the parking lot as the three blacks SLEPT.

Numerous studies by law enforcement agencies, universities, and human rights organizations have shown that race discrimination is as real today as sexual discrimination. Equally qualified women tend to make less money than their male counterparts, because they are often judged by their gender. Judgments based on skin color come from that same, antiquated mindset. I am in no way saying the black community does not have serious problems with crime, drugs, education, etc. But to somehow ignore facts gleaned from objective studies to proclaim yhe end of race discrimination is bit premature.

The PROBLEM with TV viewing rather than READING is that there's little time for analyzing the message and judging its validity. Eye-wink

Here are some interesting excerpts from ABC's "What Would You Do If You Witnessed a Break-In?"

"There have been times when I've been a witness to things and had to take off work, and it has been really involved. I try to mind my own business," said Mary. Another said, "I should have done something." Several expressed anger that there were so many witnesses who did nothing.

Thankfully, there was one person who responded, "You can't turn a blind eye or a deaf ear if somebody's in trouble," he said [a lesson his father taught him]. "It wasn't [my property being vandalized] but, you know, it was somebody's. We're all in this together."

[There's been a similar program about a lost wallet, with similar responses from people (no matter their color).]

....................

Skin Color and the Public's Response

So we asked those who approached the black kids or reported them to police, "Would you have acted any differently if the boys were white?"

Sang said, "I would have done the same thing. Maybe I would have stopped them sooner."

Joan A. and Martha had a similar response: "I did notice they were African-American young boys in a white neighborhood," said Joan A. "But if they had been white kids, I mean, I would have done exactly the same thing."

Martha agreed, "I might have done it quicker if they were white kids."

"Actually, I probably hesitated because they were black," said Joan D. "I don't like to assume that three black kids are up to trouble. But they were clearly up to trouble," she recalled, laughing. "But had it been three white kids I'd have done the same thing. I might have called quicker."

[There was no similar "test" conducted in a predominantly "black" neighborhood. Would there have similar results?]

....................

The person who called to report the teens sleeping in the car at the park during the daytime was concerned for the many "little kids" nearby. If someone is loitering and perhaps pretending to sleep, then it just might be better to ask the police to monitor the situation than to ignore a possible child predator, rapist, car jacker, drug dealer, etc. who's waiting for just the right moment to strike.

One of the "black" teens said that "it was a hurtful reminder that racism is alive and well, and that people are still frightened by the color of other people's skin."

[There wasn't a "test" using "white" loiterers. Would there have been a similar reaction?]

"'Whether it's because of the media, because of history, we as Americans have an association with blacks and crime,'" [a psychology professor at Yale University] said, emphasizing that "'both blacks and whites have that association.'"

Maybe it's because statistically a larger percentage of crimes are committed by "blacks" compared to their percentage share of the population.

"In 2005, offending rates for blacks were more than 7 times higher than the rates for whites."

That certainly doesn't make all "blacks" criminals, but it could explain why people might take notice of 3 "black" teens loitering in a park. I'd notice, no matter the skin color, because there is so much crime today committed by criminals of all skin colors.

ABC implied that these people reacted to or ignored behavior based on "race" and influenced viewers to come to that conclusion with selective editing, a common technique. "Racism" sells because many find confirmation of their victim status and others are rightly angered by injustice.

"ABC Fakes Muslim Prejudice, Unsurprisingly Finds 'Islamophobia' in America"

Dateline (NBC) set out to stir up the public about G.M. "rolling firebomb" pickup trucks. To "prove" their claims, "testers overfilled one truck's gas tank, used a nonstandard gas cap that popped off on impact, and strapped remote-controlled model-rocket engines to the truck's frame to guarantee a fire."

Sensationalism attracts viewers. Hopefully, this "exposé" will remind us all to evaluate what we read and hear and that people should not be "judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

It sounds like it will be a good book Larry.

I like the example you use with Jewish people substituted for black people. Everyone would be outraged if any other race of people tried to make excuses for their bad behavior and choices. Yet we accept the same excuses readily from American blacks.

With affirmative action everything has been skewed in the favor of any minority and yet American blacks still complain. No matter how much favoritism they have been given, they still want more.

You said something about Larry substituting Jewish people for black people and then said that if any other race was substituted for black, etc. Maybe you meant group of people instead.

Jewish people are in fact, Jewish. That is their religion (Judaism) not race. There are actually blacks that are Jews as well as other races too. Just thought you'd want to know. My high school Jewish girlfriend made sure I knew.

My grandparents escaped from nazi Germany. I have heard enough about what they went through, stories of hardship, and hardwork. Thanks for the lesson on Jewish people.

Based on your grandparents experiences I'll say you knew it was a religion and not a race and that you simply wrote that in haste. We've all done it. My point is too many people get it confused or just don't know any better!

Time and time and time again I find you seeking out every possible opportunity to rail on blacks for being given everything and wanting everything and not working for any of it. Your nauseating repetitive diatribe on us blacks is purely sickening. I don't know what has you stuck on one message, but EVERYONE knows you don't respect the contributions of hard working blacks. We know that you will view us through the same prism for the rest of your life. ENOUGH already! We get it! What SOLUTION DO YOU HAVE for the problems us blacks have that you just can't stop regurgitating? Just blog as BeaverII. Actually, you are beginning to make Beaver look like an understanding human being. I have to say that it would be a challenge for me to try and have a conversation with such a one track person as you have become, and that's unfortunate. Just know that I won't judge you for the sins of others that just happen to be your complexion.

ps. I have never asked from you or taken from you, and the only guilt I have is that I've read your monotone message one too many times.

So, you don't agree with Larry Elders' premise: "White racism no longer poses a significant problem in American life"? Guess you missed the word significant?

Larry Elders: "'Black America,' if a separate country, would rank No. 16 of the top countries in the world, as to GDP; and the black middle class continues to thrive, an advancement that preceded affirmative action. But Hillary Clinton, before a black audience, accused the then-Republican Congress of being run like a 'plantation.'"

Of course, it's your side that calls such men "Uncle Toms" and other disparaging names (Sniffy calls Herman Cain "grubby") instead of celebrating their success and emulating the character qualities that have made them successful. Those who do work hard and practice sound financial principles, whether "white" or "black" or "brown," have the opportunity to succeed in this country like no other.

“Fields of Dreams”

With hard work and unsinkable optimism, Reynaldo Robledo went from migrant worker to owner of a California winery.

“I Will Remember” (An extraordinary story of memory lost and found)

After surgery for a brain tumor when he was only 17, Andrew Engel’s “memory recall score was 68, comparable with that of a person who is developmentally challenged. His only career option would likely be a highly supervised manual-labor job.” It’s amazing what Andrew has accomplished through his perseverance and hard work. (There is often prejudice against mentally disabled people.)

Alonzo Herndon, Atlanta's First Black Millionaire

“An African American barber and entrepreneur, Alonzo Herndon [born into slavery] (1858-1927) was founder and president of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the most successful black-owned insurance businesses in the nation. At the time of his death in 1927, he was also Atlanta's wealthiest black citizen, owning more property than any other African American.”

Auburn Ave. was the "richest Negro street in the world"
and “one of the nation’s most notable black communities” where business entrepreneurs, doctors, attorneys, and others lived, including the family of Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr.

How did these people succeed? How are you so successful? (You got an education, for example.)

Who's "we"? As for watching TV, I was kidding. READING is a better use of time (much more cognitive stimulation). Eye-wink

"Too Much TV: New Study Links Television Exposure With Attention Problems in Children"

Children with ADHD [as well as adults] are easily distracted, get bored quickly, rarely sit still, and often neglect to think before they act [impulsive]. [They're easily confused and impulsive as well.] These characteristics can be a serious detriment to a child’s home and school life.

A new study in the April 2004 issue of Pediatrics found that hours of television [with its rapidly changing images and events that cause overstimulation of the brain] viewed daily at ages one and three was associated with attentional problems at age seven.

One of the many common problems that adults with ADHD exhibit is difficulty concentrating when reading. [Hack: "Can't read it; too long." Eye-wink ]

-.-.-.-.-

"Television Could Rot Your Brain"

When you are watching television, your higher brain regions (the neocortex and midbrain, for example) shut down, and activity shifts to the lower brain. The function of the lower brain, or "reptile brain," is reactive — it merely responds to stimuli (the "fight or flight" response).

Krugman's research also supported the theory that television watching "numbs" the left brain [logic & facts, i.e., reality based] and shifts activity to the right [feelings & imagination], sometimes permanently. This is an ominous thought, as the left brain handles the organization, analysis and judgment of incoming data.

-.-.-.-.-

Consider your brain a muscle, and find opportunities to flex it.

"Read, read, read,"
says Dr. Amir Soas of Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland. Do crossword puzzles. Play Scrabble. Start a new hobby or learn to speak a foreign language. "Anything that stimulates the brain to think." Also, watch less television, because "your brain goes into neutral," he said.

This is, of course, not from clinical research, but from empirical evidence gained from one child, but many ADD children find the same thing, according to those who study such things. I just started it today. Larry Elders and Bill Cosby have a good message for all of us.

Everyone has a story about hard times. The American Indians, the Japanese who were put in prison camps after Pearl Harbor, people who escaped nazi Germany, people from Europe who came here as indentured servants, and American blacks have stories of hard times here also. We are all one big melting pot. Anyone who came here as an immigrant has a story to tell.

Yes, some stories are worse than others. I think everyone can agree that all of these things were wrong. Having slaves was wrong, driving American Indians off of their land was wrong, having prison camps for people that had already become American citizens was wrong.

I just started this book, but Larry's message seems to be the same one my grandmother taught me. The best revenge in life is to work hard and be successful. She operated on the theory that instead of using all of her energy feeling sorry for herself, she would put it to good use building her own buisness. It wasn't easy, but my grandparents did eventually build a very successful buisness.

I do respect any American that is hard working. Most Americans of all races are very hard working. My "diatribe" is against the very, very, few who are not.

I still don't understand why we do not have an American Indian history month or a history month to recongnize all of our men and women in uniform. You and all of the other people who serve with you, past and present are the backbone of this country and the very reason we have a country at all. They deserve more than 2 days a year of recognition.

I guess we really can't have a meaningful conversation if my saying that this author Larry Elder has some valid points sets you off.

Thank you, Hack for your service to our country. Thank you for giving me the right to free speech to disagree with you. I wish you the best in everything.

"I guess we really can't have a meaningful conversation if my saying that this author Larry Elder has some valid points sets you off."

I would never be set off by your endorsing a man's book. I took and take offense to what you said below:

"With affirmative action everything has been skewed in the favor of any minority and yet American blacks still complain. No matter how much favoritism they have been given, they still want more."

Contrary to your claim that your "diatribe" is against the very, very, few who are not," you painted "American blacks" with a broad brush statement which includes me, as I happen to be an "American Black."

Painting the "American Black" with shotgun statements like this, I dare say, won't unite anyone, will it? It's hard for me to feel like you and I are working for the same goals in this country when tax paying, law abiding guys like me end up covered by blanket racial criticisms.

I'm on your side Skyspy. I wish you could see that many, many of us are.

Cheers, and goodnight,

Please show me one excuse I made for bad behavior of blacks. Was it when I said I understood why the gang wannabe's got stiff sentences? Was it when I said the "free the Fayette two" crowd would not be effective because of their divisive message? Was it when I have scolded black youths for thinking they could get quality employment with tats, earrings, and sagging draws?

Ummm, what's my diatribe on whites, exactly?

"What SOLUTION DO YOU and the NAACP have for the issue of blacks committing such a high percentage of crimes compared to whites except to cry racism every time someone brings up the issue?"

Beaver, just be glad your school children are typically safer around guys who look like me (demographically) than they are (on average) around guys that look like you. If you make the blacks cause more crime thing, you might want to qualify what "types" of crimes for intellectual integrity. Very clever use of borrowing from a highly skilled writer. I was ebullient with your alacrity to offer cogent approbation of my thoughts through emulation. Our petulance towards one another is but a facade to hide our ineffable, yet genteel concord.

Hack doesn't need me to defend him but I will anyway.

I missed the part where he blames "whitey" for the problems of the black community. Hack respects anyone that works hard, tries to lift themselves up, to make a better life. He also understands that people need opportunities, something to grab hold of enabling them to better themselves. It's like the saying how can you get experience without getting a job. Contrary to your belief, a great majority of those without just want a hand up not a hand out, the black community included.

And by the way, your PS, real class there!

Gee Larry, I'm having a hard time mustering up a lot of sympathy for your latest flop of a book (#2437 on Amazon's bestseller list as of this morning).

Perhaps there is some confusion amongst the general public regarding your book title? I gotta admit when I heard you were writing a book titled "Stupid Black Men", I assumed you and your buddy Thomas Sowell were writing some sort of joint autobiography!

You and Sowell have carved quite a lucrative niche for yourselves, penning soothing bromides to conservative America, telling them that it is okay to castigate black folks as being shiftless and lazy. The trouble is, your message doesn't resonate very well outside of your core audience, hence poor book sales.
