"Deadly Magnolia" arrested

It was a case of “doctor shopping” that brought notoriety to a woman who has seen more than her share of it in times past.

Seventy year-old Fayetteville resident Patricia Radcliff Taylor, known previously as the “Deadly Magnolia,” was arrested Feb. 26, charged with receiving 3,700 Hydrocodone tablets from area doctors in the past 21 months.

Taylor’s arrest came at the culmination of an investigation that have been underway for the past several months, said Fayette Sheriff’s Drug Task Force (DTF) Lt. Jody Thomas.

Taylor was charged with three counts relating to misrepresentation and fraud under the code section dealing with unauthorized distribution of controlled substances, Thomas said.

Taylor is accused of visiting various doctors and filling the prescriptions she secured at a number of area pharmacies, said Thomas.

Thomas said future charges against Taylor are pending.

Securing sufficient evidence on prescriptions drug cases is a lengthy process, Thomas said, due to the number of subpoenas that must be obtained.

Taylor, formerly Patricia Allanson, is famous, perhaps infamous according to some and has been the subject of an American Justice television documentary and a book.

Taylor's motives were questionable when her husband went to prison for the murder of his parents. She later served time for the attempted murder of her husband’s grandparents. And after her release, the Deadly Magnolia was suspected of attempting to kill an elderly couple so she could benefit from their changes to their will.

So she finally got arrested. Somehow I don't feel safer now although I appreciate the hard work of our police officers. There more "deadly magnolias" out there and our kids are still at the risk of drug popping so until I don't see all the drug dealers in jail, as a parent I will never have peace. I am aware this will not happen in my lifetime...

Doesn't seem like you were TOO concerned, seeing as it took you over a year to make a comment.

One had to wonder when Law Enforcement was going to actively address the huge problem of prescription drug abuse. The damage to our senior population from "out of control" doctors and the danger to our society from illegal resale of prescription drugs simply boggles the mind of those who have been victims.

My mother died in 1998 of massive amounts of prescription pain killers and tranquilizers obtained from ONE doctor. At the time I shared the records, complete with now empty bottles, with the FCSO Dare officer. Have any of you ever seen a thousand capsule bottle of Darvon or a 350 capsule bottle of Meprobamate?. “Deadly Magnolia” is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to prescription drug abuse.

Thank you Fayette County DTF.

Your mother isn't the only one who obtained massive amounts of prescription medication from only one doctor. Only about 5% of the population who abuse prescription medications actually paid a drug dealer for them, the rest either had a relative or friend talk to ONE doctor or they talked to ONE doctor themselves. I agree with you MajorMike something does have to be done about these doctors prescribing these medications to anyone who knows what to say to receive them.

If you read the history of "Deadly Magnolia" I don't believe this would be the case with her. I shudder to think what she did with some of those pills. I doubt that she took them herself.

I'm really sorry about what happened to your mother.

Kudos to Fayette DTF! I hope they continue this prosecution with other less-famous members of Fayette county...there are many Dr. Shoppers out there...I know of a case proven in family court where nothing was done (YET). ...drugs are drugs, no matter how you obtain them.

I just read up on her....she was really wicked. It is hard to believe someone could believe her, but I guess people like that are so good at weaving a web.
