Thanks Beaver. There are great citizens here in Fayette County - especially Fayetteville. How boring if we all thought alike on issues. I will always challenge your 'barbs' regarding race and 'blacks' - and I see I'm not alone. God bless all!

Does it really matter?

Someone please tell me who would have been elected other than the commissioners we have today if we had district voting? We would have the same people in the same seats.

This whole deal is nothing more than a bunch of Confederate flag waving fools who were willing to give their lives to keep the old Georgia state flag and can't stand seeing the days vanish when black folks were forced to live on the other side of the tracks.

The district kind of voting is used all over the country including places a lot better off than Fayette County.

knowing what happens here on the blogs when idealism raises its head, but..."Can't we all just be friends?"...seriously, it would REALLY be nice if just once, ONCE here, we could get into a real political discussion that highlighted differences in philosophy between people without that discussion degenerating into a racial diatribe. Please understand that this is not pointing a finger at any one person or side to the racial discussion. But there needs to be an understanding that all issues do not revolve around race.

Take, for example, the district voting discussion. The point that district voting is about fair and equal representation for all citizens of Fayette County has been completely lost. The fact that people in the southern end of Fayette County who were the first to raise the issue of district voting some years ago has been swamped by the racial animus that has arisen in these posts. Do people not understand that there are those in the county who think that the system of at-large elections is intrinsically unfair as it concentrates power? *sigh* Keep the faith.

Many of the issues in local and national politics, prompt controversy, and much debate.

Most people want what every law abiding person wants. The normal things like a safe clean place to live. Most people want to live in peace.

The district voting issue is very controversial. I could buy off on it if I could see evidence of district voting being successful in other communities. Are there any counties, that are equal or better than Fayette where this has worked to make living even better?. Meaning the same or safer, better schools, higher income, low crime. Has this worked in another county like ours?

thanks for asking. Of the top ten cities in the US (According to CNN/Money Magazine) the only ones close by are Suwanee (Gwinnett Co.; #10) and Lake Mary, FL (Seminole Co.; #4). Gwinnett Co. has four districts with a chairman of the county commission who is elected at-large. Seminole County has five districts. The other eight cities/counties are spread around the country. Most have districts with two having at-large systems. I would provide a link to that, but I do not have that bit of knowledge (three cheers for the technolgically illiterate). I can forward you info if you like. Again, the issue here for me, is not racial as much as fair representation. I appreciate dialogue. Keep the faith.

We could get along if we would realize that other people have different views, that's why it's good to live in the land of the free.
If we didn't insult or says things to offend the other person and respect their views.

After blogging on here for several months, you seem to be very uncomfortable living among minorities. The southeast is heavily populated with African Americans, hispanics and latinos so I doubt that you will EVER feel comfortable here. You may want to consider transitioning to a whiter state and here are the top ten:

WHITEST METROPOLITAN AREAS IN THE U.S.

Some of those places voted overwhelmingly for Obama. Beav wouldn't like the company. Maybe some remote trading post in Alaska would be even better for him.

Or maybe some nice place in Idaho.

Altoona, Pennsylvania, whitest city in America. 96.7% White, 0.5% Hispanic. A veritable Aryan Nirvana for the race-baiters here.

At-large voting got us Greg Dunn, Peter Pfeifer, Eric Maxwell, etc. It causes us to keep electing idiots. I think the negatives with at-large voting far out weigh the positives.

Those guys are not idiots, johenry - Peter may be a little slow and Greg an egomaniac, but certainly not idiots. They would have been elected regardless of whether or not we had district voting. I'm glad they were since they all look out for the entire county. And when they make mistakes it is because they are wrong or misinformed or have their panties in a wad over some personal slight - real or imagined; but they don't make mistakes by being a special interest politician trying to push through some pork-laden project for "his" district.

That's the real danger of district voting - special interest projects and a small special interest group of geographically-joined voters being the only ones to select several county commissioners. Stated once again - under district voting we all lose our right to vote for (or against) all 5 commissioners.

Leave it alone - it is fine the way it is. Unless of course someone has to inject race into it and if that is a factor we can develop a quota system, 1 black, 1 oriental, 2 hispanics and 1 white. 3 of them need to be female or gay. How's that?
