NAACP District Voting Rally, 2/28/08, 7:00 p.m.

Denise Conner's picture

I came across a flyer calling for a District Voting Rally, and here's what's on it:

"EVERY Metro Atlanta county EXCEPT FAYETTE has DISTRICT VOTING!" Shocked

[Shock! Fayette "is NOT like the others!" But "they" are doing their best to bring our county down to the level of Fulton, Clayton, etc.]

"Fayette's ANTIQUE 'At Large' county elections date back to the CIVIL WAR!"

[So what? Aren't "antiques" rare treasures that are worth a lot more? Laughing out loud ]

"No Taxation Without Representation"

[That cry dates back to the American War for Independence, a.k.a. the Revolutionary War. I just wonder what percentage of the taxes the protesters pay, with the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), etc. And just how are "they" not represented? Puzzled Giving them that VERY expensive park hasn't stopped their whining for "more."]

Rally Thursday, Feb. 28,2008, 7:00 p.m.,

County Commission Meeting Room
(during the regularly scheduled meeting)

140 Stonewall Ave., Fayetteville

_______________________________________

This flyer does not indicate who's calling for the rally, but my sources link it with the NAACP & likely Virgil Fludd. If you don't want the National Association of Always Complaining People to dictate how our county is run, then show up Thursday to let them know that we aren't giving in to their demands. There have already been veiled threats of a lawsuit if their demands are not met (typical strategy). Let the commissioners know that the majority of Fayette Co. is happy with our present system.

This is an odd play on an acronym given the author's nature of complaining about the NAACP, the soon to be republican nominee for president, both democratic nominees, "liberalism," the laws of our land with regards to reproductive rights, the alleged turning of our country from God (in the view of some christiany people), social programs designed to keep people from dying of hunger, exposure, or treatable illnesses, or the use of tax funds for anything other than building jails. Hmm. go figure.

The panic emanating from this blog, over District Voting in Fayette County, is reminiscent of raising the Yellow Fever flag to scare away Union soldiers during the Civil War - bring on fear and panic to scare away the bad guys.

District Voting will be implemented in Fayette County eventually, so it's in everybody's best interest to educate themselves on this topic instead of instilling panic and isolating ourselves as one of the last county hold-outs in Georgia. No doubt that the Department of Justice will eventually step-in, if we don't make the change ourselves:

A VOTING RIGHTS ODYSSEY

FASCINATING HISTORY OF GEORGIA VOTING

"From slavery to the late twentieth century, white Georgians and their elected representatives implemented an extraordinary array of tactics designed to prevent black political empowerment. These measures evolved in response to changing federal laws and at different times included official black disenfranchisement….and electoral structures such as at-large voting (Fayette's current system) that allowed whites to monopolize government positions."

Department of Justice: "Anyone aggrieved by minority vote dilution can bring a federal lawsuit to stop it. If the court decides that the effect of an election system, in combination with all the local circumstances, is to make minority votes less effective than white votes, it can order a change in the election system. For example, courts have ordered states and localities to adopt districting plans to replace at-large voting, or to redraw their election district lines in a way that gives minority voters the same opportunity as other voters to elect representatives of their choice."

I want the representative of my community to be accountable to..... my community. I will tire very quickly if my representative feels compelled to champion issues which do not reflect the views of my community or if self promotion is the intent. I want this representative to regularly meet with the community. I want my representative to acknowledge those within my community that have different views and not just dismiss them. Finally, I want my representative to be proud of his or her accomplishments.

I apologize for all the “I wants”

I read this post two or three times, and I cannot find anything in it that I disagree with. Surely, we can sit down and reach some sort of common ground with which to go forward, rather than stand back and shout over each others' heads. Keep the faith.

There shouldn't be anything to disagree with as this is the common ground. This is what we should expect from our representatives.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I had to make dinner and do some laundry.

Gee I wish I had the answer on that one. To me, it is just common sense to respect the community that one represents. I don't mind discussing further on this board as I have nothing to hide.

One thing I would like to note are the Clayton concerns voiced by many are in fact real concerns. I'm not talking about the always present "they" vs. “us”. I'm referencing the real concerns that even some Clayton residents are concerned with. Heck, even “sniffles” acknowledged this indirectly with his “lesser schools” post. There needs to some real effort to ensure those in our community that all elected officials do not condone nor accept that behavior and that they are also stakeholders in this community.

that we do not repeat the problems of Clayton County in regards to the schools. We should not look to run, but we should address the problem areas before they get out of hand. There are community awareness forums this week in the schools. We have to support the school districts efforts to tackle these problems by supporting parents.

Solution #1- provide some sort of guided/supervised program after school for students who have no parent at home when school is out. I was very fortunate, as a parent & a teacher to be on the same schedule as my children. I played "soccer mom" many an afternoon...cooked many a dinner...oversaw my share of homework...because, financially, my wife had to work outside the home. Too many of our kids come home to an empty house after school. And as my grandmother used to say "Idle hands are the devil's playground" LOL or as I liked to translate it..."Busy hands are happy hands". Let's work with that one for awhile. Keep the faith.

First, many thanks for your service as a teacher. I perceive it as a very rewarding experience and one that takes special individuals with a strong heart to do. I sometimes wonder how I would deal with a young student that is neglected by his or her parents and is starving for attention. I guess I couldn't make it as a teacher since I probably would spend part of my paycheck on these students in need.

As for the Clayton school issue, you are a better judge than I. Looking at the numbers for school offenses as noted in the AJC, there seems to be a big breakdown discipline. I would have to think that this extends to the home and a breakdown in that environment as well. You mentioned the sacrifices you made for your children. I've made the same ones. I know there are those in Clayton that have done the same thing. But the problem is so large there. Is it a result of a breakdown in the family unit? "Daves mom" any comments?

When the hutchette was in the Clayton schools one of the biggest problems was the parents treated school like a babysitter and not like the learning institution it is meant to be. Busy hands are indeed happy hands.

I agree with you that schools have to be more than babysitting services. To do that they have to educate...to educate they have to teach things that the students don't know...therefore schools have to challenge students to expand their horizons, to go into areas where they do not necessarily feel all that comfortable. We, as parents, then have to get out of the way and let the educators educate. Keep the faith.

I received my flyer from the Fayetteville Democratic Women organization. No one is threatening anyone. Fear of 'them' is getting out of hand in Fayette County. 'Them' are here. "No one is threatening anyone."

Oh, yes, they are -- with a lawsuit if things don't go their way .... "Why this hateful attack?"

I guess I'll see how the "rally," planned to take place during the Commissioners' meeting, goes.

Also, did the "Fayetteville Democratic Women organization" produce the flyers? Why didn't the sponsors put their names on the flyers?

"Tax paying, law abiding citizens, maintaining some of the most beautiful homes and prosperous businesses in PTC and Fayetteville. Many are your neighbors" who DON'T WANT DISTRICT VOTING shoved down our throats by the NAACP. Why don't they concentrate on gangs and crime and errant youth?

"Why don't they concentrate on gangs and crime and errant youth?"

Many organizations and people in our community are able to do more than one thing at a time; gang forums, district voting drives, anti-crime initiatives. I suspect, however, that many of the drunken and weed smoking PTC and Fayco youth have no idea what an NAACP is. I'd say that is a good grass roots drive for PARENTS. District voting, however, is a perfect cause for a politically minded group to take up.

Who is 'they'? There are organizations that are doing just that! They have members from the churches, the NAACP, the synagogues, the mosque, - all concerned citizens who want to continue the good life that we enjoy in Fayette County. What are you doing?

Mainly the NAACP and other "always complaining people."

I have to question just how successful "they" are, though. Eye-wink

But I do know a lot of families (the mom's married to the dad, not shacking up with someone and her kids don't even know who their dads are) who are very successful with their children and grandchildren. (I do pity and support women whose husbands divorced them or died, or husbands in that situation. I even give help to women who have children by several different dads and never married one of them. Their children have a really hard time.)

But, how is district voting helping "the children"? Puzzled

These people already ruined other counties, now they want to ruin this one as well. I love the acronym Denise, they are indeed always COMPLAINING!

Everytime they see a community that is crime free they aim for it to see how quickly they can take it down. It is there life work sadly. This threat of lawsuits reminds me of clayton county 10-15yrs ago. They were determined to get all black leaders......and look at what they did to that county.

You don't get it do you? American blacks are the only ones who want to be consistently singled out......so they can play the race card. If no one knows that you are black it would be harder to pull the race card wouldn't it??

I don't see any other race demanding to be singled out. No Irish Americans, no Swedish Americans no Japanese Americans,.......no Israeli Americans. We just don't see that, because every other race creed and color of people are proud to be here and they want to blend in. They don't want something for nothing.

I trust with your above comments, you'll be the first to hop on a boat for your Mother-land, being an "African American" and all, right?

From your examples - I am white, but don't celebrate St. Patty's Day nor Oktoberfest, although I could claim some German heritage from about 5 or 6 generations ago, but I don't. I'm an American, plain and simple, who is discriminated against because I am white. Nothing the "Complainers" complain about have my best interest in mind.

Five generations ago my ancestors were right here - designated/hyphenated as 'black' or 'negro'. My family has fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam and my grandson is in Iraq. They fought/are fighting for your 'interests'! You're welcome!

So you want to drag your ancestors into this because they fought, or are fighting, for America. Guess what? My ancestors did go to, and some members of my current family are fighting in the, war for America, too, most likely side-by-side yours. So now what's your point?

Simply put, the NAACP doesn't take on any issues that deal with any group of people who aren't black. That leaves me out of it, although I am "white," I'm not 100%, I have other races in me, too. I totally agree with several other posters here who have been trying to point out to you the NAACP is a safety net for black people, no matter the cause, and because there will ALWAYS be a cause.

This is from the NAACP's web site:

" Since its founding in 1909, the NAACP has worked tirelessly to end racial discrimination while also ensuring the political, social, and economic equality of all people. The Association will continue this mission through its policy initiatives and advocacy programs at the local, state, and national levels."

You will notice the "all people" part of the NAACP mission statement. The NAACP has represented women, hispanics, latinos. The NAACP has many white members. There are members from a wide variety of ethnicities.

I am not a member of the NAACP, but I can't let you try to type your conjectures into fact.

this is not where this blog should have ever gone, as it is about district voting.

I posted MY opinion. But if the NAACP works for "all people," then it may want to do more publicity when they (your word here) 'represent' anyone who is not black.

I didn't realize it is your responsibility on this forum to watchdog and not "let you type your conjectures into fact." That was not what I was doing. I stated my opinion for what I have seen played out when the NAACP gets involved and brings it to light in the public eye. Maybe if I had said it was "my opinion" at the top of my post, we could have avoided this.

"All who feel it's wrong to complain about lack of voting privileges; lynching; separate but 'equal' schools; unjust judicial system; racial profiling; crime"

If you are a democrat selected for indictment by Karl Rove and company, it is not 40 years too late to talk about an unjust judicial system. If you are one of the 200 people cleared of their convictions by DNA evidence, you most definitely don't feel it's 40 years too late to fix our judicial system. In an article in USA Today, they outline the typical DNA clearance:

"Most exonerations come from cases from the 1980s and 1990s, before DNA testing was available or widely used. DNA was first used in an American criminal court case in 1987. The Innocence Project — which now has 36 affiliates at law schools and law offices across the USA — says its records show all but two of the exonerations occurred in convictions that happened before the year 2000.

Scheck said the "typical" DNA exoneration case has not changed much over the years. It often involves a sex crime allegedly committed by a black man in which the white victim is often the only witness, he said."

Denise, take off your GOP glasses and see the world as it really is. Republicans aren't the only Christians. Liberalism is not a disease. Conservatism is not a panacea. District voting is in the spirit of the Constitution and is absolutely inevitable (even here.)
And, finally, Americans, by and large, will not fear simply because a conservative says, "BOO!"

No. Go to your sources again. There are citizens in our country who are still intimidated when trying to vote; there is still racial profiling; there are still schools that cease to offer 'equal' education when the student body is predominantly minority; there are still unjust sentences based on 'race' and economic status. 1964 did not change prejudice 'overnight'. It's intelligent, but 'uninformed of the reality of life' individuals like you that make it difficult for meaningful conversation about life in America to progress. If only all could just walk in another man's shoes for one day. Walk with brown or black skin in our country; walk with inferior education - and unprepared - regardless of your color. If these situations didn't happen 'very often' any more, we wouldn't have this discussion. I too love my country - and respect your insistence on believing that your conservative point of view is always right. To some of the others who insist that I don't know about 'hard work' and 'responsibility' - the very fact that I'm an educated women in America, retired from a 'leadership' type job and stand on the shoulders of blacks and whites who have achieved manifests that I have learned how to achieve the American way. That doesn't mean that because you and I have achieved - that we cannot assist to remove the obstacles that prevent others from achieving. If women or minorities or men or majorities don't take advantage of the opportunities - then that is their problem. My point is that the opportunities are not available to everyone - yet.

The only thing that her and the NAACP know is that they were discriminated against in the past. "They" don't want to move past it, because "they" want to use it as a crutch and throw it up in "our" faces every time that "they" want to use it as an excuse for the 70% out of wedlock births in the black community, the high number of black males in prison, low test scores, poverty, etc., etc. etc.

"They" don't want to move past the stain of racism and low expectations, because it would mean that "they" are going to have to be held accountable for "their" success or failure, just like the rest of "us".

I recently heard Mr. Cain (who's a "black" conservative, for those who don't know) talking about his dad (who was married to his mother) and his work ethic. His dad died at the age of 56 (?) but had worked hard, saving as much as he could for the future and spending as little as possible. The money that he left behind (close to $1 million) provided for his wife and her care during her debilitating illness for the next 30 years. The death tax owed at her death was more than $1 million.

“Despite his successes, Cain does not forget his humble beginnings.

His parents, Luther Cain, Jr. and Lenora Davis Cain provided examples of hard work that he would remember the rest of his life. His father at one time worked three jobs: cutting hair in his off hours, working part-time at Coca-Cola as a chauffeur, and working an evening shift as a janitor in a bakery. His mother worked as a domestic. This work ethic would inspire Cain, not only to work hard, but to 'rise up singing,' as DuBose Hayward's lyrics stated in "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess. Singing would come later in his life.

"Cain told Wallace Terry in Parade Magazine, ‘My father never looked for a government program, a government handout. I never heard my father complain about somebody owing him anything. All I ever saw was how hard my father worked to get what he wanted out of life. My mother was my spiritual light -- Mom talked to me about God. She taught me that success is not a function of what you start with materially but what you start with spiritually. Those were my beginnings. They have been with me ever since.’”

In April 2006, Herman Cain [60 - born 1945] was diagnosed with colon cancer and then underwent nearly a year of chemotherapy, as well as surgery to his liver and colon. I wonder if that had anything to do with fewer columns than usual. Puzzled

Where's your proof to back up your statement that "his column [was] dropped by scores of newspapers"?

“STATEMENT BY NORTH STAR WRITERS GROUP IN SUPPORT OF COLUMNIST HERMAN CAIN”

North Star Writers Group is pleased and proud to offer its complete support to our outstanding columnist Herman Cain, in light of ridiculous criticism leveled at him today by the organization calling itself WakeUpWalMart.com.

Mr. Cain's August 23rd column - defending Wal-Mart against its critics and labeling many such critics "Hezbocrats" - was well-written and entirely within the bounds of fair commentary and debate.

Mr. Cain's membership on the steering committee of the organization Working Families for Wal-Mart is a non-issue from our perspective for an opinion columnist and has never been any secret. Furthermore, WakeUpWalMart.com's demand that this group be disbanded reflects its own intolerance of anyone offering a point of view other than its own. If advocacy groups like this want to win in the arena of ideas, they should try making better arguments instead of decrying the very existence of organizations with another point of view.

North Star Writers Group syndicates columnists from both sides of the political spectrum, and we support the right of all our columnists to express their points of view in pointed and thoughtful ways as Mr. Cain has done in this week's column.

Whenever someone takes issue with the blather of Herman Cain, he or one of his surrogates inevitably plays the "cancer card".

"How can you criticize dear Herman, the man has CANCER!"

as if having cancer exempts you from criticism.

"CANCERIST" Laughing out loud

Cancer is classed as a "negative" or feminine, introverted zodiac sign [Ms Extreme Puzzled ] and is ruled by the moon (hiding in the shadows, a creature of the darkness, quite similar to GOLLUM). The astrological symbol for Cancer represents the claws of the crab, or breasts, symbolizing motherhood [AGHHH! poor kids] and the link with the moon.

Cancer is associated with MEDUSA, whose hair was transformed to serpents and her face so horrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn a man to stone.

"The Cancerian has many potential faults. Laughing out loud They can be untidy, sulky, devious, moody [crabby], inclined to self-pity because of an inferiority complex, brood on insults (very often imagined), yet are easily flattered. They can be tactless and difficult yet, because they are normally ambitious, they will curry favor by floating with majority opinions, outlooks and fashions of the day. As a result they often change their opinions and loyalties and, indeed, their occupations, and lack stability. They are easily corrupted and, because they are convincing romanticizers, can make successful confidence tricksters. Their romanticism in another sense make them ardent supporters of causes [Obama-maniac], for example a football team with whose heroes they can identify in a world of fantasy."

"Physically they are average to below average in height, with a fleshy body and short legs in comparison with the rest of them. Their hair is usually brown, their faces round, their complexions pale, their foreheads prominent, their eyes small and blue or gray in color, their noses short, perhaps upturned, and their mouths full. They sometimes walk clumsily."

"People with Cancer active in their charts are subject to coughs, indigestion, gas, gallstones, general problems with stomach, liver and intestines, plus emotional disorders such as depression, hypochondria ["fainting" at Obama rallies] and hysteria [Obama-mania]." Laughing out loud

Please keep your sophomoric mud-slinging inside your fighting-ring , denise. Why would you even put forth the energy to type this into your post?

And do you really believe that people actually read all of your cut and paste jobs or go to the numerous links you spend hours researching and downloading? Like most on here, I scan what you post and look for slivers of original thought, like this juvenile sentence referring to Ms Extreme. And I still don't understand why you would even refer to me in your inane argument.

Isn't there a zygote somewhere that you can go save, instead of spending time posting so insanely?

I'm always amused when conservatives try to portray liberals as latte drinkers, perrier water consumers, or hyphenated name havers.

Christine Todd-Whitman aside, this is a funny story of timing. We had a new vendor on base providing squadron refreshments. They had bottled water for sale right next to our water fountain. We also have a tv in the snack room and it was tuned to Fox. One of my conservative buddies was saying expensive bottled water like perrier was for touchy feely liberals like me. The funny thing is Fox was running the story of VP Cheney's wish list when he goes to hotels; the temperature, thread count of sheets, all tv s tuned to Fox, and A CASE OF PERRIER! The timing was amazing, and I still laugh about it when I see my conservative bro!

Hi, ImJustSaying! That's an interesting question you pose.

In short, I cannot think of any particular tenet of conservatism that I agree with.

As a Christian, I find the basic tenets of conservatism to be incompatible with Christianity.

I recognize that some people may take issue with this, and I'm sure there are a great many people who are able to rationalize their conservative beliefs as being somehow in step with Christian values.

If they truly believe that they can be both a Christian and a conservative, more power to 'em. Who am I to judge? Smiling

That is the difference. Some want law breakers deported immediately. As George Lopez said in a skit when he was being deported, "Oye! Tia! Cover my plate. I'll be right back." The guy that hit me has been cruising with expired tags almost three years. Because he has no real assets, there is no leverage to keep him from running / relocating; no credit to ruin; no house to foreclose; nada. All you can take is his freedom (legally anyway).
