Are you paying attention to the 'new' America? If Atlanta goes 'white' - that does not mean that it will never have another African American mayor. The United States is now in the process of showing the world that we have the ability to judge people by the content of their character and not by their race or gender. The young people moving into Atlanta - white, brown, red, black - are living and working harmoniously together. LEAVE THEM ALONE!!

"The United States is now in the process of showing the world that we have the ability to judge people by the content of their character and not by their race or gender."

This statement of yours implies that up until this point, America has not had the ability to judge people by the content of their character and that everything is race based. Sounds just like Michelle Obama when she said that up until now, she never has been really proud of America.

Furthermore, the fact that 90% of blacks are voting for Obama means that most of them are voting on him based on the color of his skin.

By the way, what does the acronym "FUBU" mean?

And what exactly do you mean by "LEAVE THEM ALONE!!" ??? What are you implying that I am going to do?

"the fact that 90% of blacks are voting for Obama means..." the he represents their interests better than any other candidate in the race. Keep the faith.

Too bad we're not all zebra-striped.

But then, of course, there would be fierce battles between the black-on-white zebra people and the white-on-black zebra people.

Occasionally, a zebra from one side or the other might say, "Why can't we all just get along?" But we all know that this is impossible.

I'm interjecting in this little racially-charged exchanged to draw attention to my blog post on Chesterton on race.

The article was written by Tom Houck.

"MLK's Driver Remembers 'Chasing the Dream'"

"Back then [1960s], he says, he was a 'long-haired, bearded, hippie-looking dude' [Democrat Eye-wink ] from Massachusetts. And he was proud to be Martin Luther King Jr.'s personal driver and assistant. 'I was a young white boy finding his own dream through Dr. King.'"

"Houck was soon involved in civil rights demonstrations. He was first arrested in Selma, Alabama, in 1965.

"A high-school dropout, Houck moved to Atlanta the following year to begin work in the mailroom at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which was led by King. He was just 18."

"Driving Dr. King: Activist Tom Houck Recalls Days As Family Chauffeur"

Tom Houck

"Prior to owning his company, Houck worked as an aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 1966-68. He was field coordinator for Congressman John Lewis and now NAACP Chairman Julian Bond in the Voter Education Project from 1970-71. Houck spearheaded a movement to pass the 26th Amendment granting 18 year olds the right to vote, as deputy director of the Youth Citizenship Fund from 1971-1973. He became a noted talk show host and journalist on Atlanta's News Talk WGST 1977-1990. He continued commentaries on WGST and the Georgia Radio News Network until 1997. In 1987 Houck started an "At Large" column for Creative Loafing (South's largest weekly alternative newspaper) and currently contributes opinion columns. Houck was a panelist on the weekly Sunday News Conference WSB TV and Georgia Gang WAGA TV from 1982-2000. He is a frequent speaker to civic and political groups and is currently working on a book Driving Dr. King: Chasing The Dream."

"The United States is now in the process of showing the world that we have the ability to judge people by the content of their character and not by their race or gender." -- Is that why the Dems have Hillary & Obama running? Laughing out loud

Is that why people like Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Michael Steele, J.C. Watts, Larry Elders, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, etc. are called "Uncle Toms" and other vile epithets?

Their "character" isn't judged to be of much value if they're Republican. Shocked

Yes, many people are "living and working harmoniously together" but not if they still think they're victims of "lack of voting privileges; lynching; separate but 'equal' schools; unjust judicial system; racial profiling,"" etc.

I voted for Herman Cain. Did you? Smiling

I love reading columns by Walter Williams, Larry Elders, Thomas Sowell, Star Parker. Do you? Eye-wink

There are people of different colors with diverse views. I got it - but you continue to use 'they' as a catch all for Americans of color. Got it?

They sure talk a good game regarding diversity, but at the end of the day the extremists on this site always fall back to "us" vs. "them".

"They" was used in my blog because I did not know for sure who produced the flyer.

Also, aren't Democrats people of all skin colors and can only blacks join the NAACP? I can assure you that I could care less what someone's skin color is, but "they, the "always complaining people," do annoy me. Eye-wink

Also, I'm an "American of color." What makes you assume that I'm not? Does that give me special privileges?

Denise,
If you don't mind my asking, what color?

Denise Conner's picture
Submitted by Denise Conner on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 5:15am.

Why, a RED-blooded American, of course! Eye-wink

Don't let my avatar picture fool you. It's not really me. Just ask $Dollar$ who the pretty blonde is.

You once said, “I am pretty well known by many.” Is this really you? Laughing out loud

Or is this really you, if you don't mind my asking? Puzzled

Although in that same thread you said that knowing who a person is should not make any difference in the validity of the ideas expressed, you seem to indicate that my skin color does, and then you ask a question that could compromise my anonymity. Like you (white, black, brown, red, blue), I prefer to remain anonymous.

Submitted by susieq on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 7:29pm.

You are wrong again. I am not that big. I won't use the F word (FAT) out of respect for Cy. LOL

I don't care what color skin you have. You're the one who brought it up -- "American of color."

"Wrong again" -- I've come to the conclusion that Dems have a very limited vocabulary. I hear that one all the time from "Sniffy." Laughing out loud

I wasn't referring to the size of the lady (I know you're not over-sized Eye-wink), but her cuisine choice. Laughing out loud

BTW, I notice that you like to wear red, too. I heard about the impassioned speech that you made. Really stirred up your supporters.

That's Betty Hutton (denise's avatar), an old actress from the 1940-50's who died last year.

Betty starred in 'Annie Get Your Gun' (avatar pictured) and also in 'The Miracle of Morgan's Creek' about a young woman who wakes up after a drunken night with a group of departing soldiers to find herself married to one of them — she can't remember which one — and pregnant. (oh..insert shocked smiley face here...one of denise's favorite smileys!)

$, you already told everyone that it's a picture of Betty Hutton. The OLD memory's not what it used to be, is it? Maybe you smoked too much grass back in Beserkley. Puzzled

There's more irony in that avatar than a guy with ADD driving a Ford Focus!

And the gal's name in that film was Trudy Kockenlocker (!!!)

I loved one review of the film: "the unfortunate confusion of promiscuity with patriotism."

How fitting!

You forgot to cite Wikipedia; that's becoming a habit with you! Shocked Here’s the rest of the story: Laughing out loud

“In 2001, The Miracle of Miracle's Creek (1944) was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' The film ranks #54 on the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list of the top 100 funniest films in movie history. It was remade in 1958 with Jerry Lewis as Rock-A-Bye Baby.”

And GO HERE to see the "promiscuity" quotation in context.

“But in the end, the movie holds up the ‘higher aims’ of the Hays Code, in that it is a ‘powerful force for the improvement of mankind.’ [Director Preston] Sturges says in his memoir, "I wanted to show what happens to young girls who disregard their parents' advice and who confuse patriotism with promiscuity.’”

“He sees Trudy's marital blunders as a natural progression towards a responsible one. Her transition affects the entire Kockenlocker clan, as her sharp-tongued 14-year-old sister Emmy (Diana Lynn) and violently protective father (William Demarest), journey from selfishness to familial warmth.” Smiling

“In her first major leading role, Hutton finds an ideal outlet for her exuberant persona. Eye-wink Her enthusiasm could be cloying, but in Morgan's Creek, it lends Trudy an endearing awkwardness of the naove [sic] girl bursting to bust out. It's easy to understand why she wants to go out with the soldiers and to sympathize with the burden of her mistakes.”

Well, I guess you had something there when you said, "I can see why you aspire to emulate her." Laughing out loud

you'd really enjoy that film. Is that your viewing choice tonight? Or isn't it racy enough? Or maybe it has too many soldiers in it and just a touch of patriotism that would turn you off? Puzzled

Does a "light, light latte" have a lot of extra milk in it? Kinda reminds me of Mayor Ray Nagin's remark about his "chocolate city." Laughing out loud

Just don't mention lattés to Sniffy Mainly out of Steam or Hack. They get touchy about stereotyping.

Actually, according to MS, I'm just like other "typical Fayette County, card-carrying Republican women" who "rant at the PTO meetings or ride in the scooters through the aisles at Wal-Mart." Shocked

BTW, isn't ivory illegal and cruelty to animals?

if "they" really wanted to take part in the system, to make it better for everyone, EVERYONE, how would "they" go about doing it that would be socially and politically acceptable to the people of this county? I mean, a lot of people on here operate under the assumption that anything "they" suggest will automatically be bad for the county without even giving fair consideration. "We don't want to be like Clayton County" is the standard refrain as if this county exists only for those who have lived here forever and retain government control. If you change the assumption and assunme that "they" are working for the betterment of all, then any proposal might just get a fair hearing . Keep the faith.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

I feel that most citizens of Fayette County feel the way you do. Thank heavens!
