Forget about Goodwill; tattoo parlor is coming to the very center of PTC

By: Letters to the ...

I have learned today that Peachtree City is going to have a tattoo parlor. It has already gotten a license and will be located in Peachtree Crossing Shopping Center. This is directly behind McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A and near The Hobby Shop. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from McIntosh High, all places where you can find our young people.

It is my understanding that Mr. Rodney Pendleton applied for said tattoo parlor to be in Fayetteville, but they had restrictions again a tattoo parlor. Evidently, our fair city had no such restrictions.

I was told that there are now restrictions in place, but Mr. Pendleton and his “Area 54 Tattoos” was grandfathered in and will be in Peachtree Crossing Shopping Center for a year. Supposedly, he will then have to relocate to an industrial area.

I don’t want a tattoo parlor on the main street of my town for even one day. And, does anyone really believe they will enforce that rule after a year? I wonder if Mr. Pendleton lives in Peachtree City (found no listing in phone book) and if not, would he would welcome a tattoo parlor in his neighborhood?

When I spoke to the lady in the mayor’s office, I was told that lots of people have tattoos, so people would probably want a tattoo parlor. I informed her that many people also indulge in murder and mayhem, but I don’t want that here either.

Why is it that we never hear of these unwanted tenants until it seems like it is a done deal? Maybe we need to let Mr. Pendleton know that we do not want or need a tattoo parlor — like we let Kroger know we were not happy about their new proposed tenant.

Oh, and for those of you who haven’t heard — our roads were abandoned by our mayor and his crony with Ms. Plunkett casting the deciding vote. I was not surprised as it seems Mr. Logsdon abandoned Peachtree City long ago.

I would suggest you take a few hours and drive around our city and enjoy what is left of its pleasing ambiance. Before too long it will all be gone and we will be just another concrete jungle and definitely not on the list of preferred places to live.

I feel as if I am attending a funeral of a well-know and beloved friend. Rest in peace, Peachtree City.

And contrary to popular belief the shop is NOT closed down and has no intention of doing so!!

Really? Are you kidding me? This will not ruin Peachtree City. I think Peachtree City could use a little more open mindedness and acceptance. This is the most close minded, tight lipped town I have ever seen. Oh and he probably has his number unlisted so people like you can not call him. Plus I have seen this new tattoo parlor and it is actually extremely nice. Why would you want to deny this man making a living just because of selfish hypocritical beliefs? Get over it.

I don't have a tattoo. I don't care if someone else has any tattoos. I care about the integrity of the owner and how he presents himself. When I think of a tattoo parlor, I think of a cheesy hand painted sign on a run down shopping center next to a pawn shop or check cashing store. It's doubtful that that will be the case here. It will take a heck of a lot more than a tattoo parlor to ruin Peachtree City. I say let's give the guy a chance. After all, there were no rules in place when he secured his position here.

As is the case with any business that opens here -- if you give bad service, you're done. It won't be any different in this case. Three Dollar Cafe closed this week. Is anyone shocked?

A word for the mayor and council: I think highly of you all. You might want to make a list AHEAD OF TIME of what businesses you would like to keep out and act on it. You won't be able to rely on peer pressure every time as was the case of the would be Kroger pawn shop. I seem to remember the mayor of Union City giving the same advice to us many years ago when they couldn't block an adult video store from opening there.

If you need some inspiration, drive through Riverdale.

People like you are so self concerned to your own meaningless little life here in our safe little use to be secluded town you forget the big picture and are blind to what is going on in the rest of the world. For an example you are rallied together for argument who knows how many people now for this tattoo shop you consider an issue where where you at when the mayor or whoever supported it when PCT moved tech wood homes into ptc so they could demolish it in downtown then they said they would move them back out after they where done, did they? NO they did not drive through harmony village and see how many people are from tech wood projects. why you are there why dint you ask them how many have tattoos or deal or do drugs or have ever stole or robbed all may say yes to all but dint have tattoos because as another viewer pointed out new generation educated people with jobs get them for own personal reasons now a day. I read some of this garbage and just say WOW! i cant believe people dint help in more of a positive way, like why dint you ask PTC to widen the cart paths? how about add lights to the criminal paths? how about check all the illegals in our town? the mexican population is on the rise also...why?... because here they can have free transportation on our paths and all live in a government house all eight of them because no one does anything...find some new subject matter that really reflect on our community not some silly tattoo shop. As matter a fact drop me a line i will go there with you and well get one together, I'll pay for yours.

Hey Cookie does the two teenagers who left a bomb in a mailbox injuring a postal worker fit under your definition of "Pleasing Ambiance?" What about the police chief who chose to resign/retire when questioned about sexually explicit conversations on his computer? That doesn't seem so "Ambient" to me...I highly doubt you find anyone screaming for help because someone else is holding them down forcing a tattoo onto them...but I bet that postal worker was probably yelling for help...The element that you are insinuating that this tattoo shop is bringing into peachtree city is apparently already there..

I hate to let you know that I don't have to move my TATTOO SHOP in a year!I plan on staying right where I'm at.I have a good lawyer and will fight this even if I have to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.I don't live in Peachtree city yet,is the house next door to you for SALE$ Cookie?

All this sorting about what business can be started confuses me.

Hottroddz,
The best thing to do is stay off these blogs and stop trying to defend your new shop. Some of the people on here can be very cruel, and they will make you look like the bad guy.

They do not realize that your customers are their 30-something, college educated, church-going children. They still think that drunk soldiers and Hell's Angels are the ones being tattooed. I think it's called a generation gap.

Submitted by justcurious on Sat, 02/23/2008 - 10:57pm.

Amen - tattoos are not taboo like they used to be. I'm one of those 30-something, college educated people you refer to and I got mine 4 years ago and I want a second one. I will gladly be one of their first customers! Smiling

Great, yet sorrowful, letter Ms. McClure. I agree that this city is going in the wrong direction. To the commenters who see being anti-tattoo parlor as sticking our nose in other people's business, that's simply not the case. While I would personally elect not to get a tattoo, if someone wants to that is their choice and they have every right to do so. This is a quality of life issue. You're probably smirking in your chairs thinking I'm some sort of alarmist. "Oh my God a tattoo parlor is coming to town! It'll only be a few days before the four horsemen come riding!" That's an extreme use of hyperbole, but let me explain. PTC used to be a family oriented community, a city where I came to form some of my best memories as a child. The PTC I used to know and the PTC of today are vastly different. This city used to be somewhat of a microcosm embodying everything that was good and pure in America. Neighbors being neighborly, children playing outside until twilight, taking long bike rides on our safe cart paths, and being proud of where we live. Now it is different. The essence and tradition of Peachtree City is being eroded by modernism, inclusiveness, a rogue city council, a creeping crime wave, and for what? So we don't have to drive nine miles (in either direction) for imported consumer goods? There are vacant retail spaces throughout the city, yet our oh-so-wise council and planning committee still give the green light to greedy and unscrupulous developers to plow more of our trees. It's sickening. I don't want the tattoo parlor here not because I believe that tattoos are somehow wrong or immoral, I don't want it here because it clashes with the idea of PTC being a family friendly, good, clean, planned community. Not to mention, it makes the slippery slope we're already on even more slippery. Ms. McClure, I tip my hat to you for having the heart to write your letter. Most people aren't going to start caring until it's too late.

I take long walks on the paths all the time. I frankly don't see the problems you talk about in your letter.

You talk about too much development, are you advocating a moratorium?

Where are you getting numbers that would say that PTC is undergoing a creeping crime wave?

Submitted by PTC Avenger on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 6:13pm.

Gee, I don't know, maybe it's the multiple armed robberies we've seen in the past months (a dollar store, a tire store, et al), or maybe it was the man who was threatened with a gun on the cart path near Wal-Mart on 54 (thanks so much Doug McMurrain.) Anyone who shops at the Braelinn Village shopping center surely rememebers the "Wanted" fliers describing suspects on the doors of the shops. What about the attempted robbery of the Wachovia bank? Or then again maybe it was the methamphetamine dealer who was caught trying to peddle his product on the cartpath, but, again, it could be the many wrappers of "tobacco" rolling products that litter the cart path, mainly around certain parts of the path. Oh yeah, don't forget about the recent gas station robberies in Tyrone and the labeling of Fayette county as a "High Intensity Drug Trafficking" area. To think that Peachtree City will somehow be magically insulated from all this is nonsense. In 1996 the PTC police department answered 17,683 calls. In 2006 they answered 70,357.
And yes, I am advocating a moratorium. I think we need to temporarily halt development and form an exploratory committee comprised of city council members, city employees, and citizens in order to engage in frank discussion of various issues and decide what is in the best interest of the city.

I think waiting until it opens before wailing about the sky falling or equating it with the further decline of PTC might be a better idea. If it turns out to be a dump with nothing but skinhead neo-nazi's hanging out, yeah, then call it not family-friendly. To assume it will be some kind of "bad place" before it even opens though is ridiculous.

I think you are dead on man. Let the people decide. If it doesn't work for this area it won't make money - if it makes money it fills a demand.

Problem solved.

I don't know where you people get your info but it shows you don't know what your talking about when it comes to tattoos.I'm not some shady aids infected drugged up biker who wants to corrupt your city.I'm a hard working business man who wants to raise my kids with same advantages your child has. What makes you think your a better human being than I am just because I'm not Mr. 9 to 5.This is America I'm American born right here in Georgia.Would you rather have another liquor store or gas station? All you talk about is the empty retail spaces throughout the city, it seems like we are the answer to your problems yet you are never happy.

just might do you some good, Cookie. Why, if I choose to get a tatoo(I have four), shoUld I be restricted as to where, because you feel this is wrong? If I want to desecrate my body, it's my choice and PTC sees this as a possible revenue (taxes) generator. Lighten-up and get some art on your butt.

Tatoo parlor, massage parlor, spa, barber shop, nail salon - all the same thing. Walk in and get something taken off or put onto your body.

Don't want additions or subtractions from your body? Don't go in.

Don't like other people enhancing their body? None of your business. If you can't keep quiet - join NOW or PETA and get a big sign to show around.

Cookie, this is from another thread, but feel free to share in this message:

Rodney Pendleton: Welcome!
Submitted by AF A-10 on Sat, 02/23/2008 - 11:09am.
I'm a guy with the same skin I was born with (minus some weathering from a life of refusing to grow up). Even though I don't do tats, I'm a big fan of living in a free country; one that doesn't dictate what art one may or may not put on their body; where and how many new holes one can come up with and hang things on and through. That being said, poor Mr. Doug Tucker sums up this confused and self-conflicting town very well. Your local conservatives will say they like small government and personal freedom, but re read what Mr. Tucker and his like-mindset locals really feel:

"I find tattoos distateful and demeaning to people, probably because they reflect an art of self-mutilation.

I'm also getting older and less comfortable with change. "

Rodney, so that you may remain above the fray, I'll answer Mr. Tucker for you:

Dear Mr. Tucker: Welcome to America, where there are brave men and women out fighting for our rights at this very moment; many of them with tattoos all up and down their arms, legs, backs. Names of their units, their fallen brothers and sisters, phrases that keep them going in the face of death. I can not speak for them, but I will speak for myself: IF YOU FIND TATOOS DISTASTEFUL, DON'T GET ONE! If you don't like change, keep yourself how you are, but you have no right to my body or any one else's who is not your minor child or dependent. I find sansibelts, shorts and black socks distasteful, but feel FREE to keep wearing them.
Rodney, I hope that helps a bit. Best of luck, and if you see a teen aged black girl, 5'6", last name King in your shop, you had best show her the door!

Cheers,

Kevin "Hack" King

ps: Mudcat, you said said:
"If you can't keep quiet - join NOW or PETA and get a big sign to show around."

She's one of yours brother! Believe that!

Please tell me that you're not prone to sexual discrimination.

My name is David Pendleton, I am the brother of the guy opening the tattoo shop in Peachtree city, I will be working there also and I see this as my chance to finally break away from SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and make a living of my own....I receive SSI because I was disabled in a motorcycle wreck...and speaking of motorcycles, if we was to open a motorcycle shop in PTC would everyone freak out and think "Oh my, the hells angels are moving in!?" No, I don't think they would, so why the big issue with us having a tattoo shop there? What you see as a hinderance I see as a way of finally getting out from underneath the lousy $600 a month the government gives me to "live on" and to start building a future for myself and my family. This is 2008 after all and not 1950, time changes and people must change with the times...For those that have shown their support of us opening up there, I thank you very much.....and for those that assume we are bringing ill will or some kind of "Evil element" to your town you couldn't be any farther from the truth.

Hi David,

I'm looking forward to the shop opening. Make sure you search all the blogs that have been posted. I have been in support.
Also tell your brother to check his email. He listed a email address in a previous post. I emailed him last night.

Looking forward to seeing the new place. I'm sure you don't have to be told, just follow the rules, keep a clean place, and make sure to keep the teenagers out. I assure you, they will try to sneak in to get a look at the work being done. Just don't give the residents something else to talk about!!
