Obama: Against all odds!

The Democrats in Fayette County aren't alone!

From the New York Times:

Only slothful thinkers still view Democrats in the West as Prius-driving latte-sippers along the Left Coast. The larger story is about home-grown identity. Eight of the 11 Western States have Democratic governors. The Democrats picked up two Senate seats in the West in the last two national elections, and are poised to pick up two more this year, in Colorado and New Mexico.
Early on, Obama took a chance on the West, sending paid staffers to places like Boise, Idaho and Wenatchee, Washington. And the Alaska office for Obama – that was a knee-slapper at the time, but no one’s laughing now. He won the Last Frontier state by a 3-1 margin Tuesday.
Obama has made cynics wilt, and stirred the heart of long-dead politicos in places where Democrats haven’t had a pulse in years. Cecil Andrus, the eagle-headed eminence of Idaho, a former governor and Democratic cabinet member, nearly lost his voice introducing Obama in Boise on Saturday. He recalled a time when he was a young lumberjack who drove down the Clearwater Valley to see Jack Kennedy speak in Lewiston, a day that changed his life.
“I’m older now, some would suggest in the twilight of a mediocre political career,” Andrus said. “I, like you, can still be inspired. I can still hope.”
This kicked off the second biggest political rally in Idaho history. And the first? That was when President Dwight Eisenhower came to visit. Last week his granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, made a small bit of family history on her own. She said that if Obama is the nominee, “this lifelong Republican will work to get him elected.”

This is history in the making!!

According to Mr. Lowery - White people are the one's that are misbehaving:

Beaver - we're not illiterate! Take a deep breath. Your hate is taking it's toll on your heart. According to past contributions from this group - they're against 'criminals' not a 'race'. Am I wrong?

"We shall work and vote for the day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around, yellow can be mellow, the red man can get ahead man, and white will behave all right!"

Why does Lowery single out whites as misbehaving, when the demographics of the prison population suggest otherwise?

Righhhht. And I suppose Don Imus just tells bad jokes.

That is pure B.S. It is obvious to me that Lowery hates whites.

LOL. Crappy poet may be true - but the video you referred us to bring back memories that have long been suppressed. That was a time that our current election is putting behind us. There aren't many politicians or 'whites' in general who would feel 'correct' in speaking so unintelligently about our Constitution. I think we're at the 'good thing' that you mention in your post. We're looking at the person - not the gender or the race.

I certainly hope that this is so.

I plan to put in a vote for McCain on election day. I cannot, in good conscience, vote for either Obama or Hillary. But it has nothing to do with either race or gender.

In all honesty, I would love to vote for a black candidate as a kind of closure on all of the racial division that we've experienced as a nation. Indeed, if candidates A and B were, in my opinion, equally qualified, but A was black and B was white, I would likely allow A's ethnicity to tip the scales so that I would vote for him/her. I think it would be good for our country in the long run. I really do.

But I am afraid that Richard has a point. I deeply suspect that there is not a small number of Obama supporters that are motivated only by the concern that I just expressed, and are willing to place the vote for a black candidate regardless of other relevant considerations.

Voting for McCain.

However, I too would love to be able to vote for a female or minority to break the barriers down further. If I drank, I would rather have a beer with Obama than any of them.

Policies first though ... after all, it's politics - not popularity.

Nicely put.

I suspect that I would really like the guy.

In a similar vein, I have found over the years that I have gotten along much better with professors and colleagues who did not share my worldview (they tended to be naturalists) than I have with a lot of preachers, etc., who did.

For one thing, the former tended to like beer.

Submitted by Davids mom on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 6:30pm.

I certainly respect that - and believe you! The interesting reality here is that the 'black' community is/was almost equally divided between Hillary and Obama. Many blacks just felt that their vote would be wasted voting for Obama - because they didn't believe he was could be elected. This campaign is historical in that he has brought together a coalition of blacks, white men, and young students - to challenge the Clintons. This, I believe, is the beginning of change in this country. Obama's winning or losing is not my issue . . my issue is the joy in witnessing this change!! (However - I would match his Harvard degree against the current president's Yale degree any day!!) LOL!

Agreed, David's mom. I thought it was quite a stretch for beaver to relate Lowery's article with the shooting at City Hall. I read Lowery's article twice now, to try and glean whether he was pointing a bigoted finger at whites, and I just didn't see it. I did gather from Lowery's article that he's peeved at the the old 'guard' that has been charged with running this country for decades, and I agree, it's time for a change.

I wonder if beaver encountered some horrible incident in his/her younger days, that has caused him/her to sound so racist at times?

Submitted by Davids mom on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 2:40pm.

I don't mind so much his apparent racism - but it's his complete disrespect for the intelligence of the participants on this blog. Most don't even respond to him anymore - but I'm concerned about the 100+ who read his 'stuff' and interpret our silence for agreement. Thanks for taking the time to 're-read' Lowrey's article. (I did the same thing - thinking that I was missing something.)

TruthSleuth1958's picture
Submitted by TruthSleuth1958 on Sun, 02/10/2008 - 11:45am.

I am trying to understand the racism you and others are referring to. Are you choosing to focus on a few bloggers and disregarding the huge number of 'whites' voting for Obama?

If so, why are you looking so hard for the few who are even considering race and disregarding the so many who are not?

Being bi-racial is a curse only whenever people choose to make race an issue.

Obviously, the masses are disregarding race in the political contest at hand, why not join us?

muddle's picture
Submitted by muddle on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 3:03pm.

No, you are right. There is nothing in the Lowrey post that justifies whatever in the heck it is that Beaver is trying to say.

So the guy who shot up the town hall was black? Is that it? (I seem to have missed a clear statement that this is so.)

If so, this is something of an anomaly, as, statisically, I am far more likely to be the guy to do that sort of thing than my black neighbor: White, middle-aged, generally conservative beliefs, etc.

It seems to me that such finger-pointing is highly selective.

from Tybee Island. We are down here celebrating yardwoman's birthday. I happened to hear the Romney had called it quits and just HAD to check in and see what the buzz was in ole Fayette County. Imagine my surprise when I ran across this article which is not so much about Obama as it is about the decrepit state of the Republican Party in the West. Reaganland has come to realize that their future lies with the Democratic Party. It is not so much that the Democratic Party stands for the things that the Westerners believe in, as much as the Democratic Party believes that everyone, EVERYONE deserves a seat at the table. Over the past seven years it became evident that unless you happened to be an oilman or one of the "inner circle" you were pretty much shut out of input. And the Republican "sheeple" marched lockstep to support them. {read What's The Matter With Kansas? if you want a true picture of how the neocons have used the voters of the GOP} The West has always been ahead of the curve in this country in trends, and it looks like, politically, they are there again. Will check in later between strolls on the beach and seafood to die for. Anyone know anything about Pearl's down here? Keep the faith.

are greatly appreciated and will be passed on to Mrs. Yard. I am surprised that no one jumped on my comments on the Obama article though. Combined with the startling turnout numbers nationwide for the Democratic Party, it would appear that the Republican Party is on the ebb. The last few years have done more to coalesce the progressive electorate in this country than anything else. As noble as some of the actions of the current administration may appear to the conservative population, the struggle for the "soul of the nation" must recognize that there is an alternative that the people are searching for. Keep the faith.

Yardman,

Pearl's Elegant Pellican is fabulous (although I think it changed names since I was there). It's still on LaRoche (I think). But the absolute BEST dining experience is at Georges on Tybee. The wine list is to die for and the dessert chef is award winning. One insider tip: skip Elizabeth's on 37th. I thought it was snooty, over priced and I left hungrier than when I got there.

It's that whole crew of neo-cons, including FauxNews. I don't mind conservatives; I like McCain. Ironically, I came to this website a couple of years ago, and spoke up for McCain, when he was a "maverick" who was being shunned by mainstream Republicans. I was ridiculed by several of the regulars here.

McCain has always had real integrity. He spoke out early on about how the war in Iraq was being mismanaged, when that position was very unpopular among Republicans, but he supported Bush's decision last year to use a troop surge and "stay the course", even when other Republicans were hemming and hawing, and distancing themselves from the war.

Personally, I thought the troop surge would not work at all, but it does seem to be working better now than before the surge. Just think how well things would have turned out if Bush had listened to his generals and sent enough troops to do the job right in the first place. Or better yet, if he had stayed out of Iraq altogether.

In any event, McCain spoke with integrity, and Bush would have done well to have listened, instead of surrounding himself with yes-men.

I suspect the Democrat nominee will be Obama, and I'll probably vote for him. However, if McCain takes office, we will be in good hands. You can be sure that he WILL listen to his generals, and he WILL take care of our troops, not stick them in some hell-hole without a real plan.

muddle's picture
Submitted by muddle on Thu, 02/07/2008 - 3:55pm.

I really don't understand the antipathy towards John McCain on the part of certain republicans. I'm not exactly out putting up signs for him. I wonder what the heck he had in mind with that bit of stuff on immigration that he did with Ted Kennedy. And the "Bomb Iran" joke was a bomb.

But I think he has served our country with integrity. And I figure that I should either be willing to compromise with candidates on some issues or run myself (which would be a disaster).

I'll place a vote for John McCain and sleep well that evening.

Conservatives who speak seriously of voting for Hillary in a McCain vs. Clinton election simply have to be out of their minds.

Why do they hate McCain?

Because he is a strong supporter of legalized abortion? Nope, he has a lifelong career record of being anti-abortion.

Because he is a supporter of amensty for illegals? Gee, so is George W. Bush!

Because he is for less war overseas and will get us out of Iraq? Heck no, he has stated he expects US troops in Iraq for "the next 100 years," and says war with Iran "is still on the table.

Because he will restore our relations with the rest of the world? Umm...he has strongly criticized European countries in the past, and is one of Russia's strongest critics!

Because he supports life in prison instead of capital punishment? Nope, he is lifelong supporter of the death penalty

No the reason the extremist wing of the Republican party (the enigmas, the BPRs, the Conners of the world) hate McCain because he went on record and called them for what they are: "agents of intolerance"!!

Luckily, we opted for the 26 mile trek rather than the 60 mile trek. I was crying at the 13 mile rest stop (across the street from the Bonnie Castle) and didn't want to leave. I really, really wanted to flag down the BRAG truck during the last 13 miles. I had to walk my bike up slight inclines. I thought my legs were going to fall off, my hands hurt from gripping the handle bars and my back was throbbing. Our biking thoughts had always been....gentle rolling hills...how relaxing and scenic. -Osama Bin Laden has not been killed by us.
-My money is worth less everywhere I go.
-Our President says we are in a long war but won't raise money to pay for it.
-Our President has said that a vote for democrats (who, coincidentally are Americans) "is a vote for terrorists"
Our President does not communicate very well.

Other than that, I like him; great father and husband, but I'm looking more for someone who can run a country; no what I mean? Anyway, I come in peace and always will. Have a great weekend with your adorable kid and overly handsome husband. Smiling

Cheers,

All of us will be rooting for you in your upcoming bout!

Here's a couple of random thoughts...

- Would Bin Laden still be alive if John Kerry or Al Gore were elected?
- The economy is a nightmare....but would the mortgage bubble have busted with Gore or Kerry as president?
- The age ole' question...do you lower taxes and expect the top income folks to spend more, or do you raise taxes on the "evil" rich?
- That's just propaganda...we all know that if Hillary or Obama were elected that an immediate withdrawal would be a nightmare...
- You are dead on...Bush does have issues communicating. Bush versus Obama in a debate would be quite interesting, even for this republican!

Bush is a good family man, just like Obama. I won't speak about Clinton....maybe she is OK, even after her husband's past transgressions. McCain shouldn't bring up marital issues when you objectively consider his past...

PS: I don't post often, but I have "lurked" for quite awhile. You always do a good job of remaining objective in your posts...

Let's just say that "remaining objective" has been a process. Smiling Nice to see you weigh in. I'm trying to cut way, way back on blogging, so this is a rare moment of blog productivity for me.

That is not an answerable question, Rock. I would like to think any other president would have acted on the Presidential Daily Bulletin "Al Qaeda determined to attack within U.S. using aircraft," but we will never know. What we do know is President Bush's fiscal policies have not been very fruitful, and our foreign policy has been a bit adrift.

We can ask if another captain of the Exxon Valdize would have run it aground, but we definitely will not look to hire the captain that DID run it aground or anyone that swears "he has really been a great captain." Just my opinion though. Enjoy the weekend!

Would like to hear your description of a "family" man! Just leave religion, Jewery, Muslimic, etc., out of it, please.

Does a family man's wife sell MaryJanein college? Do his kids have fake I.D.s, so as to be able to drink in bars?
Is he in favor of "waterboarding?" AA meetings, maybe?
And on and on?
