Mayor Harold Logsdon

The following is the summary of an interview conducted with Peachtree Mayor Harold Logsdon on Jan. 28, 2008:

Mayor Logsdon said the meeting at City Hall between City Manager Bernard McMullen and police Chief James Murray involved McMullen providing the chief with the information about the chatroom logs and the chief deciding to retire.

“The information was presented to the chief and he just up and said that he decided he would rather retire,” Logsdon said, adding that McMullen didn’t present Murray with any potential punishment but was instead looking for an explanation.

“It never got any farther than that,” Logsdon said.

“It was, ‘Here’s some information we have, and do you have an explanation for this,’ and, ‘I think I’ll retire,’” Logsdon said. “It pretty much went that way.”

Logsdon said there was “never an investigation” and that there was no “witch hunt” to get rid of Murray. He added that Murray never, to his knowledge, offered an explanation for the explicit material that was attributed to his city computer.

Logsdon said it was not retaliation for the DUI on a golf cart charge that McMullen received in June 2006 from Peachtree City police officers.

About the meeting and the sheriff’s deputies being called to City Hall, and Murray being asked to surrender his weapon:

“It was one of those things that you take a precaution because you don’t know how people will react. ... It was nothing more than just a precaution. It turned out we didn’t really need him (the deputy) anyway.”

Logsdon said he hadn’t talked with McMullen in detail about how the meeting with Murray went.

Mayor Logsdon got his wish and destroyed the police chief.

Logsdon said there was “never an investigation” and that there was no “witch hunt” to get rid of Murray. He added that Murray never, to his knowledge, offered an explanation for the explicit material that was attributed to his city computer.

Yeah, it was so casual the mayor brought an armed sheriff's deputy.

I agree this was a powerplay pay-back. Getting Chief Murray to officially surrender his weapon to uniformed deputies was an “in your face” snub. McMullen and Logsdon must be small men that never had a real career in the military. Think about it--- if Murray was a risk with a weapon, they should have stripped him of it a year ago. What did they think he was going to do when confronted with charges of surfing the net---- go postal ? What a joke. Rumor has it that Wayne was embarrassed to be called in for that but followed orders and did it as cleanly as it could have been done. If you cleaned out all of us in law enforcement that did anything close to this, this county would be down to the crossing guards. This was political all the way.

While I agree that it was indeed a concerted effort to rid the city of the Police Chief, let's not bring the military into the fray. Mr Logsdon served in the National Guard long enough to receive retirement benefits, I believe. Mr McMullen to my knowlegge has not worn the uniform.

Irregardless of prior military service they took the easy way out. Further, they insured that in doing so, they would not be held liable for any litigation that could come their way. Having deputies present, at least to me, demonstrated the lack of courage of one's convictions by either the mayor or city manager. If they were afraid of him, and one has admitted that fact to me, why on earth did it take this long?

Truly, we are in a sad state of affairs when a sitting mayor and a city manager has neither the gumption nor the backbone to act upon something they have known since the fall of 2007.

As far as the military, I've known Privates who would have made a better decision.

Drinks around the horn at the Y-Knot. Now that Jim Murray is gone, the famous DUI’vers license is back. Fear is now gone from the drinking and driving golfer/Amphiteatre crowd. Look for a new Police Chief who will get the message when he hears “Don’t you know who I am?”. Ever since Bernie Mac got his DUI you know that they were gunning for Jim Murray. Murray did a great job for us and this child’s play on his part was a little silly but no big deal. Enjoy your retirement, Jim. We will miss you.
