Mayor Logsdon talks about chief’s resignationTue, 02/05/2008 - 4:39pm
By: John Munford
The following is the summary of an interview conducted with Peachtree Mayor Harold Logsdon on Jan. 28, 2008: Mayor Logsdon said the meeting at City Hall between City Manager Bernard McMullen and police Chief James Murray involved McMullen providing the chief with the information about the chatroom logs and the chief deciding to retire. “The information was presented to the chief and he just up and said that he decided he would rather retire,” Logsdon said, adding that McMullen didn’t present Murray with any potential punishment but was instead looking for an explanation. “It never got any farther than that,” Logsdon said. “It was, ‘Here’s some information we have, and do you have an explanation for this,’ and, ‘I think I’ll retire,’” Logsdon said. “It pretty much went that way.” Logsdon said there was “never an investigation” and that there was no “witch hunt” to get rid of Murray. He added that Murray never, to his knowledge, offered an explanation for the explicit material that was attributed to his city computer. Logsdon said it was not retaliation for the DUI on a golf cart charge that McMullen received in June 2006 from Peachtree City police officers. About the meeting and the sheriff’s deputies being called to City Hall, and Murray being asked to surrender his weapon: “It was one of those things that you take a precaution because you don’t know how people will react. ... It was nothing more than just a precaution. It turned out we didn’t really need him (the deputy) anyway.” Logsdon said he hadn’t talked with McMullen in detail about how the meeting with Murray went. login to post comments |
