Walt Banks intersection would remain 4-way stop with increasing delays

The Peachtree City Council is being asked to sign off on a plan to add more turn lanes and a traffic signal to the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Crosstown Road.

The recommendation also calls for additional turn lanes for the Parkway and Walt Banks Road, but no traffic signal.

The consulting engineering firm hired by the city noted that a traffic signal at the Parkway and Walt Banks would be the ideal solution along with the proposed turn lanes, but added that the current four-way stop would still be “within the acceptable range” through 2007, despite increased delays and lower “level of service.”

“A signal would also provide the safest environment for the golf cart crossings,” said the report from GCA, Inc.

The additional turn lanes for Walt Banks and the parkway include right turn lanes on the westbound and northbound approaches and a left turn lane on the southbound approach.

For the Crosstown Road/Parkway intersection, right turn lanes would be added to the northbound and southbound approaches and left turn and right turn lanes would be added to the eastbound and westbound approaches.

For more than a couple of decades, I've driven through at least one of these intersections at least once a day. For the most part, the 4 way stop at Crosstown/Pkwy works. I think a light would actually make things worse. But at Walt Banks/Pkwy... a light would help move folks along, though I think you'd get more of a back-up going SB on the Pkwy, from a long line of cars going through to the Aberdeen/Pkwy stop sign all at once.

Crosstown/Parkway has the worst drivers in PTC that congregate at that intersection every weekday. I know, I'm on it daily.

Thrill to the utter confusion as inattentive drivers can't decide who goes when! Scream as the 90 year old bearded lady waits for 30 other cars to go first because her reflexes just aren't what they used to be! Howl as cellphone yakkers fail to notice anything going on. Lose your lunch as teens just ignore the stop signs and go on through!

It's been recommended for about 15 years now that a light be put there. It's past time for it, even though it will back some traffic up to the shopping center area if it's timing isn't set right.Council has continually voted it down while waiting for more wrecks and maybe a fatality or two, but I think this time we'll see it since extra lanes would get put in also.

Oh yeah..ah hah. Yep - JUST what we need more of in PTC.

Crosstown and the Parkway are just fine the way the way it is now. For the most part, the honor system works ....faster and more aesthetically pleasing then a traffic light.

At both intersections, in my opinions.

Yeah, if someone required lessons for most as to just how to determine who is nest properly. Most seem to think that edging out and bluffing is the preferred method!

talked of towns he knew of in Germany where they did not even have stop signs. The system seemed to work well because the people had to police themselves. Keep the faith

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Yeah Germans will jump off a cliff behind a leader (Fueherher) even if they can see the bodies piling up at the bottom of the ravine! As long as Opera music is playing, they will obey!
Now watch some of them jump upon my spellong!
