Did bullying factor in teen bomb incident?

1 suspect accused different bully earlier in year; suspects told police fellow Starr’s Mill student targeted for bullying

One of the two Peachtree City teens accused of manufacturing and placing two homemade bombs in retaliation for an alleged bullying incident reported earlier this school year that he was bullied by a different student at Starr’s Mill High School, officials said.

The teens, ages 15 and 16, were charged with manufacturing an explosive device and were released back to their parents with conditions on their release ordered by a juvenile court judge.

School officials served a cease and desist order Monday on the student accused in the latest bullying incident, school spokeswoman Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said. Such orders, which must be signed by students who receive them, notify the students that if another incident comes to light they will face punishment per the school’s student code of conduct.

Berry-Dreisbach said Starr’s Mill officials tried to serve the cease and desist order Friday but the accused bully wasn’t at school that day.

For bullying, which includes not just physical assaults but harassment and intimidation, students can face being suspended or expelled from school, depending on the result of a disciplinary tribunal hearing on a bullying report, Berry-Dreisbach said.

Berry-Dreisbach could not confirm whether the most recent bullying report was filed against the 17-year-old whom police said was the target of the two homemade bombs that were found Friday and Saturday at a residence in the Foreston Place subdivision.

One of the bombs was found on a porch and the other was found in a mailbox, injuring a postal carrier who was treated for a minor chemical burn and inhalation injury.

The bombs were made with a plastic container using a chemical reaction between drain cleaner and aluminum foil. The two teens were charged with manufacturing an explosive device and were released back to their parents with conditions imposed by a juvenile court judge.

Berry-Dreisbach said the school system takes bullying reports seriously, and she said the matter was appropriately handled by school officials.

There is no bullying problem at Starr’s Mill, she added, noting that a total of three bullying incidents have been reported this year so far.

It is also possible that some bullying incidents at the school aren’t reported by students, Berry-Dreisbach said.

At least “Nitpickers1” got the point. The Citizen and their “free speech” abomination which I am currently utilizing is a symptom of the problem, not part of the solution.
We have bullies, just like every other community. We also have faltering property values—not because our school system has become less desirable due to gangs or bombs, but because the entire nation is reeling from the effects of a 7 year hyper-inflation of housing prices. If you take a moment and search the internet for rental rates, it will become abundantly clear that it is just as cheap (or expensive) to live in the Mundy’s Mill or Lovejoy high school zones as it is to live in a place where your child can roam the golf cart paths of Peachtree City or the hallowed halls of McIntosh and Starr’s Mill. The Citizen and “free speech” make their money by mongering fear and promoting racial tension. The problems our community faces can be controlled by real dialogue and dialed-in parents. While we vent on this tawdry website, our children face tough decisions. The real problem is that Fayette parents are oblivious. To further explain my point: go to a McIntosh basketball game and you will hear hip-hop songs with sexually and criminally suggestive lyrics blasting through the P.A. speakers during timeouts. Go to a game at Jonesboro or Creekside and you will hear thumping beats during timeouts, but the lyrics will be conspicuously absent. Sandy Creek has similar policy: no lyrics allowed. The parents and administrators at these schools are more in-tune with reality. I’m not saying that hip-hop lyrics played in front of a school audience promote bombs and gangs. I am saying that Fayette County parents are out of touch with their kids and that this website is direct proof of that fact. Personally, I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any more.

shadowalker

thank you thank you

if the family is not involved in the teens life

they will be running foul

the mother and father should not allow what is happening and take
it to the school and tell them to make the school a place of leaning

and then back the school.

In your claim that Nitpicker got your point, that's not a bragging point, my friend. Nit likes to post just to get a rise out of anyone who will fall for his antics.

I'm addressing your post where you state the REAL problem in Fayette County is Fayette County parents:

Howard - you state "Fayette parents are oblivious" and the example you use to prove your point is music played during timeouts at MHS. But within the next two sentences, you contradict yourself with "I'm not saying hip-hop lyrics played in front of a school audience promote bombs and gangs." Well, which is it and why is that your barometer that we are oblivious? Do you really think the people (meaning students and parents) who recognize the music, with or without the lyrics, still realize which song they're hearing and most likely a great many of them are singing the lyrics whether or not they're being played? I do. I'm one of those parents who can remember the music WE grew up listening to wasn't much different. Yes, it wasn't as graphic, but for the day and time, our parents had a lot of the same objections.

I like how your posts on The Citizen blast: The Citizen, the posters, the school admins, hip-hop lyrics, PTC, golf cart paths, Fayette County parents, and on and on and on. You complain about the very avenue you continue to post your discontent, anger, and opinions on: The Citizen's "taliod blog."

So, how do you propose to help Fayette County parents not be out-of-touch with their kids? You don't offer any ideas or suggestions (just blame), and that you're mad about it and not going to take it anymore. I'll be looking for you to start the wave of change that will forever improve this county and how we parent.

Wait a minute, people! Am I the only person who recalls the guy who shot a postal worker to get medical treatment in the federal prison system??! If injuring a postal worker is a federal offense, why was a State juvenile judge permitted to release these little miscreants to their parents' custody? There's a lovely federal facility in downtown Atlanta that will accommodate them just fine.

Student(s) did NOT report being bullied by this student - ever. Parents reported it to the school on Friday.

School attempted to act on it that same day, Friday, when reported but "alleged bully" was absent.

That same day the parents first reported a possible problem with the 'absent bully', Friday (eve.) student and his friend (both African-American Juveniles) 'bombed' the alleged bully's house and mailbox, house bomb exploded, mailbox bomb remained undiscovered until injuring a mail worker Saturday morning.

Arrests were made and kids were sent to RYDC Saturday.

Kids were released from RYDC and remanded to parents.

Monday: First day alleged 'bully' returned to school, Starr's Mill issued him a cease and desist letter and suspended him for first offense bullying.

Tuesday: Student bombers attempted to return to Starr's Mill but were not allowed to do so because of the violent off campus felony statue of the Fayette County Board of education.

Bully and bombers are suspended and bombers are awaiting trial.

Sounds to me like everyone did what they were supposed to do but the bombers.

I am amazed at how quickly some of you blame the school or the police for the actions of two juveniles who could have maimed or killed a student, his family, and a mail worker.

Would you same people be defending the bombers and blaming the school if they had done, or do, this same thing on campus next time?

As far as I am concerned this is top-notch work from the school, and the police. Now, whomever let them out of RYDC needs a new job. That is why we have RYDC for crying out loud!

So these two kids make two bombs, intend to injure someone by putting one on a porch (maybe just scare them) and really do injure a postal worker and they go home with mommy and daddy? They don't get locked up? Then they claim they were the victims because someone "bullied" them and the focus changes to the bullies.

Was this a gang initiation? Were they white and whites don't do gangs?

It is because of the "race card" they were let go!! If they had been white they would still be in jail where they belong!!!

Let's face it, their worthless parents failed so far, why turn them back over to their "parents"????

The only reason they were let go is yellow-bellied scotty is afraid of the race card.

Note to the parents: you are carless irresponsible dolts....MOVE!!!!!!

Admitted that it was possible that some incidents maybe weren't reported!
I would say that MOST weren't reported as it always has been true.

Although setting out bombs that could hurt just anybody could indicate why they were "bullied," it certainly requires more than a session in the office to correct.
Hail fellow, bully, bully!

I didn't see where the person was proved to be a bully. Were they?
Surely one accusation only with no broken nose doesn't indicate that!

I say, "lock up the bathrooms," that will stop it!

Again, this is an embarrassment to our community. Not the bombs or the bullies. Homemade bombs and homemade bullies arise all over the state and the county. It is the sensationalist nature of this tabloid internet blog masquerading as a legitimate news source that leaves Fayette County with a black eye. Take a moment and realize what is wrong here. Go rent "Goodnight and Good luck." Subscribe to Harper's. Or at least recognize that this is a very flawed system.

Mr Beale this is an embarrassment to our community. I guess you are mad at the TV station that reported it too?

In Hilton Head they toss parents out of subdivisions if their kid does any vandalism. Which would be a good policy here. Those kind of kids and parents lower the home values for everyone.
It's about time someone reported this crap. I just wish they could have named the parents to embarrass them into being "parents" for a change. This does not happen in every community. This is not the norm, or even normal behavior. The parents here are more irresponsible than the kids.

These kind of crimes have increased here in the last 2-3ys. Most of the time the victims never press charges. Just because some people are too afraid to report this crap, doesn't mean it isn't a crime. It also doesn't mean that it hasn't happened.

The parents and kids that are out of control here are ruining home values for all of us. Most people will not pay top dollar to live in a community that tolerates kids and parents that are felons. That is what we have here. No, not all of them, but more kids are involved than most of you want to admit.

These people are the ones who blame the school, the police, and everyone else they can hang it on but the kids themselves. That's why they have the gumption to do this bombing to begin with .... no consequences. And now .... It's the schools fault! Sad .... very sad.

Thanks for the hint on Hilton Head---kid hater territory!
Old fogies.
I think that is illegal.

Submitted by skyspy on Sat, 02/02/2008 - 8:18pm.

and there is a difference. They don't hate kids they hate crime and careless idiot parents.

It isn't illegal. Eagles Landing also has covenants for their subdivision, against anyone with kids out of control. First the parents are fined and warned, then they have to leave. One family had to leave before their home sold.

Kids that are out of control lower property values, that is basically stealing money from other people in your community.

Actually they are not all "old fogies" some are 30's-40's yuppies who like nice things, and they don't want those nice things destroyed by brats!!

Have a nice night.

Boo-hoo!

You should be glad SOMEONE is bothering to warn parents 'bout this stuff, cause the all-is-rosy school system sure ain't!

What's so "sensational" about an innocent person (the mail carrier) being injured anyway?

Bigger problem here is if bullying isn't addressed we'll get another Columbine. Think bout it people!!!

Go back and read what I got from the Police - the alleged 'bullying' was addressed the day it was reported.

A better question is: Why are they already out of RYDC? OR, who will they bomb next, where and why?

This is simply not true! My neighbor has been up at Starr's Mill several times this year dealing with a group of 5 bullies who have targeted her son, and two other children. Right there, that is more than three incidents. I've had to report incidents in the past but not this school year.

Mom to 3 (and all of their friends, who love to hang out at my house-- LOVE THAT, almost always know where they are!!!)

A few years ago my son was the victim of bullying by a couple of brothers that live in our neighborhood. At one point they threatened to “kill him and his dog” in front of a witness. I knew that there was a 99% chance that they were just running their mouths but I reported it to the school anyway. It took the assistant principle that was in charge of investigating this incident, 3 days to talk to the witness. When I asked why it took so long she said she was busy. The final result was that she had a “good talk” with the grandmother of these kids. Nothing else happened. My advice to any parent that thinks that their child is in any real danger is to forget the schools. Go straight to the police. Is it any wonder kids feel that they have no recourse but to do something drastic to stop the bullying ?

You said "It took the assistant principle that was in charge of investigating this incident, 3 days to talk to the witness. When I asked why it took so long she said she was busy"

I think we can figure out who she is if you tell us what school. Female administrators are at every school but usually only one plus the Principal. If 'she' didn't take it seriously, you should call the county office and et them know!

Do you really think that the police would do more?

They would question your son and you more than anyone! What about that vicious dog?

Aggravating poor old Grandmas over abandoned kids is sinful anyway.
Cops should have found the "daddy."

poipendicular's picture

I don't think the police would do much besides talk to the bullies and the grandmother. It would let the guardian and the children know that a file was made about them, and perhaps warn the bullies off picking on the child in case further incidents happen, and perhaps child services would intervene.
Also what good would finding 'Daddy' be? Perhaps he is incarcerated? Or the worst the father is deceased, and the guardian is stuck raising the children and they have gone wild because of the situation.
I believe this person took the correct first step in notifying the school especially if the bullying also occurred in school. While notifying the school, also let the administration know that next occurrence would lead to a report filed with the police. For most people having police come to the home would be embarrassing. If nothing else, the humiliation would do it.

As always, there are two sides to every story. Police et.al. have to hear both sides before making a determination. Sometimes a warning is enough, sometimes, no matter what you do, a person can violate orders and hurt someone. Women deal with this quite often in bad relationships.

The student here actually did NOT notify the school but the parents did on the day their son bombed the alleged 'bully's' house.
