McIntosh head football coach Dwight Jones resignsWed, 01/30/2008 - 4:03pm

The McIntosh Chiefs are on the search for a new head football coach. Dwight Jones has resigned as McIntosh’s head football coach to take the same position at Jones County High School. He was expected to turn in a letter of resignation either Thursday or Friday, according to McIntosh athletics director Steve Cole. In an e-mail sent out Wednesday afternoon, Cole said the following: “Coach Jones has decided to accept an offer to become the head football coach at Jones County High School. We appreciate what Coach Jones has done for our program over the past two years and for our school. We will begin our search for a new head football coach immediately.” Cole expounded further on Jones’ departure in a phone interview Thursday morning. Jones’ resignation didn’t come as a surprise to Cole. “I had heard through the grape vine that he was looking for another job,” Cole said. “Dwight was courteous to let me know a few weeks ago that he was looking at other jobs.” Cole said he doesn’t regret hiring Jones. “We felt we did the right thing in hiring him,” Cole said. “He put all his heart into moving McIntosh forward. Sometimes things don’t work out.” Cole has received phone calls and e-mails regarding McIntosh’s head coaching vacancy, but he hasn’t interviewed anybody yet for the position. “I don’t expect to start interviewing anybody until about two weeks from now,” Cole said. “It could even be a week and a half. I would like to get somebody in place fairly soon. “The coaching search is wide open at this point. This is a tricky place to coach. My main goal is to find the right fit for this position. [McIntosh principal] Mrs. [Tracie] Fleming and I have to find a profile for the right coach for us.” Jones went 2-18 in his two seasons as McIntosh’s coach. Jones has coached football in Georgia and Alabama for 28 years. His first head football coaching job was in 1990 at Russell County High School in Alabama. He coached there for five years before coaching Hardaway High School for six years, Auburn, Alabama High School for one year and Northside, Columbus for four years. In an interview with The Citizen in 2006, Jones cited the challenge of the McIntosh job as one of the biggest attractions to the position. “Everyone says that they haven’t ever won at McIntosh,” Jones said. “We expect to win, though.” Attempts to reach Jones were unsuccessful. login to post comments |
