The McIntosh Chiefs are on the search for a new head football coach.

Dwight Jones has resigned as McIntosh’s head football coach to take the same position at Jones County High School. He was expected to turn in a letter of resignation either Thursday or Friday, according to McIntosh athletics director Steve Cole.

In an e-mail sent out Wednesday afternoon, Cole said the following: “Coach Jones has decided to accept an offer to become the head football coach at Jones County High School. We appreciate what Coach Jones has done for our program over the past two years and for our school. We will begin our search for a new head football coach immediately.”

Cole expounded further on Jones’ departure in a phone interview Thursday morning.

Jones’ resignation didn’t come as a surprise to Cole.

“I had heard through the grape vine that he was looking for another job,” Cole said. “Dwight was courteous to let me know a few weeks ago that he was looking at other jobs.”

Cole said he doesn’t regret hiring Jones.

“We felt we did the right thing in hiring him,” Cole said. “He put all his heart into moving McIntosh forward. Sometimes things don’t work out.”

Cole has received phone calls and e-mails regarding McIntosh’s head coaching vacancy, but he hasn’t interviewed anybody yet for the position.

“I don’t expect to start interviewing anybody until about two weeks from now,” Cole said. “It could even be a week and a half. I would like to get somebody in place fairly soon.

“The coaching search is wide open at this point. This is a tricky place to coach. My main goal is to find the right fit for this position. [McIntosh principal] Mrs. [Tracie] Fleming and I have to find a profile for the right coach for us.”

Jones went 2-18 in his two seasons as McIntosh’s coach.

Jones has coached football in Georgia and Alabama for 28 years. His first head football coaching job was in 1990 at Russell County High School in Alabama. He coached there for five years before coaching Hardaway High School for six years, Auburn, Alabama High School for one year and Northside, Columbus for four years.

In an interview with The Citizen in 2006, Jones cited the challenge of the McIntosh job as one of the biggest attractions to the position.

“Everyone says that they haven’t ever won at McIntosh,” Jones said. “We expect to win, though.”

Attempts to reach Jones were unsuccessful.

Did you get your money's worth in the bonuses you paid Jones????

McIntosh's handicap to get coaches starts at the Top. She doesn't like sports. She doesn't like the Fuss of parents complaining about every sport, every season. Sports is extra-curricular and is not required Excellence, as is Academics. Steve Cole is an great AD, but is hand-cuffed. The needle in the hay stack way Mc looks for coaches will keep sports programs down. The candidate must fill the teaching vacancy. They must be an award winning teacher. Be able to afford to live in the area... That is why Mc promotes JV coaches.
Solution; Forget H S coaches. Travel Teams get athletes Exposure and develops your player. Why is Mc's soccer so good?
Why is Mc's volleyball so good? H S season is the Off Season.
It is a shame Mc can't develop your player.
It is a shame Mc penalizes multi sport athletes.
H S athletes have a 2-3 year shelf life. Pick your sport by 9th grade. The summer of their Soph. year is the most important. Point them, don't push them. Success will propel them.
My players shelf life is almost up. I wish I knew this 5 years ago.

To the tune of "Along Came Jones"

I plopped down in my chair and browsed "thecitizen.com"
The McIntosh ball coach was there, it seemed he dropped a bomb
Two wins in two whole years ain't much, still he had us all believin',
"I think it's time to go" he said
That's right! The coach was leavin!
And then he laughed at us (and then)
As he packed it up (and then)
He turned around and then (and then, and then...!)

And then along went Jones
"Two Seasons" Jones
Coach Dwight Jones
"No Offense" Jones
Along went long, lean, lazy Jones

I sat there in shock, so I got up to get myself a snack
I heard a lot of players gripe by the time that I got back
Down on the old ball field, some kids were havin' fits
"We can't believe that coward had the nerve...
He just gets up and QUITS"!
And then he thumbed his nose (and then)
as he hit the road (and then)
He's Macon-bound it's said... (and then, and then...!)

And then along went Jones
"Two-Eighteen" Jones
Coach Dwight Jones
Job-hoppin' Jones
Along went long, lean, lazy Jones

I know some of the players, and they gave it their all. Coach just wasn't a good fit. Keep the faith, someone will take the job and get them to .500 soon enough.

Is winning half the time the prevailing mindset? Is .500 all you aspire to? Is that good enough? It's still not WINNING!! Why not find someone who expects to go 10-0?

When that goal is met, another goal can be set.

Well...it's better than .100, however, .500 is not winning!! Using that logic, why not settle for .250?

unless ways have already been found to meet them. More of that false optimism.
In this case:
a winning coach with a mediocre team is coming
several players who were 1st or 2nd year players are coming along well
a few senior players are back who look good
many more go out for football to put a stop to losing
a JV team has been running a year or two to train players
and others.....

Any of that happening? Any recruiting from Clayton or Fulton county going on?
Want some more suggestions? Just how badly do you want a winning team?

What do you think is realistic goal for McIntosh?

When was the last time they reached my proposed goal? I know it's been a while.

"Why not find someone who expects to go 10-0?"

Short answer: Anyone who thinks McIntosh can go 10-0 most likely won't pass a drug test! Sticking out tongue

I'm not so concerned about Job-hoppin' Jones as I am about athletic director Cole. Jones had a history of bailing out every 2-3 years. Cole wants to wait two weeks before he STARTS doing anything? This guy obviously doesn't have a sense of urgency about the football program....spring practice will be here before he knows it.

What else is so high-priority on Cole's agenda that he cannot or will not fill an important vacancy?

when asked to evaluate his team's chances for the upcoming season said, "I am excited, we were 0-10 last year and we have everybody back!" Keep the faith.

Sniffles5, with all due respect, it's the current lack of high expectations that will insure continued mediocrity, or worse. It's sort of like a microcosm of society, you see. I don't think a short answer will solve the Chief's current situation, but thanks for trying. Today....I can pass a drug test.
Peace out!!

Spear- you've got that right! Too many of the parents want everything to be fair. I swear, it's like the parents are making pansies out of so these boys. "Don't say this and that to little Johnny and be sure to give little Johnny equal amount of playing time". And yes, Mrs. Flemming doesn't appear to be behind her staff by backing them. No, she appears to be the one watering the pansies. Coach, I know you will see real men with supportive parents in Jones County. Good Luck to you!!!!

Hi There... you have no clue whatsoever about what happens on the practice field, the game field, or the locker room. Parents don't have a say in who plays or how much. Coach Jones ran the team his way, and if you survived training camp, you were doing well. He worked those boys hard, and although they lost they gave 110% for coach Jones. A new coach is always a difficult adjustment for everyone, and Jones' quick exit from McIntosh indicates that is just wasn't a good fit for him or the school. Coach Jones had complete support from the school, the athletic director, and the parents and players. Sometimes, it's just not meant to be. Too bad really...

If what you say is accurate, volley819, it is a real shame that Jones has pulled up his stakes and moved on so quickly. Perhaps it is somehow for the best. I know the boys deserve better.

This community has got to get serious about having a competitive program in football. We have too many good athletes who come up through the local PTC Packers program for this to be happening when they get to the high school level. There has got to be an urgency and an expectation of winning. It's great that the fans show up to the games to support the team; that's the way it should be. But as long as everyone simply accepts these kinds of seasons and considers them to be inevitable, nothing will change.

Whoever the next coach is will need to get tied into what's going on at the middle school level at Bennett's Mill and JC Booth. If the staff at McIntosh doesn't get plugged into what's happening at the previous playing level, it will be difficult to compete. These younger athletes should be getting indoctrinated to the McIntosh system and schemes so that they can make a faster transition to the high school level. The more successful programs in the state know this already.

Mr. Cole, you say that McIntosh is a "unique" place to coach. Please don't accept anything less than the best possible football coach you can possibly hire. To do anything less is to cheat the young men who compete in the McIntosh football program, as well as the PTC community that supports this program.

All true, there has to be involvement in middle school. We have excellent athletes in Peachtree City, just like anywhere else with a similar population. However, there is one huge difference, and that's the demographics 'in town' in Peachtree City. We always seem to suffer from a lack of speed. Speed can win games, and without it, it's difficult to compete. You can't teach speed. The other thing McIntosh hasn't had in the last 5-6 years (or longer) is a quarterback who can make the big play when it counts. We've had good running backs, some decent receivers, great kicking game, and even a good defense (most of the time). We've even had some good offensive lines, but never really had the QB that could get the job done.

After one game last year. So we had that going for us at least...... which was nice. Good luck, dude.

You got to have some athletes that want to play football. Everyone knows SOCCER is king at McIntosh. Sure the guys that played football had all the support they needed. But it take more than just support to win.

need to lighten up on this coach. From what I heard he came and gave it his all, it didn't work. Be glad he's making way for someone else. If I remember McIntosh will be in the same region with Fayette Co. and Starr's Mill, Whitewater, etc. Guess he saw there was going to be no winning going on and he couldn't compete at the same level due to whatever. At least Mc beat Sandy Creek and no one will take that away from them, wish I had been there, heard it was some celebration.
