Surprise meeting in Tyrone for multiple changes to town’s charterTue, 01/22/2008 - 5:09pm
By: John Thompson
Less than a month into its tenure, the new Tyrone town government is already doing things a little differently. Town Clerk Valerie Caldwell confirmed Tuesday the Town Council will hold a special meeting this Thursday at 7 p.m. The two subjects to be discussed are changes to the charter and an executive session for personnel. Caldwell could not comment on why the meeting was not announced at last week’s meeting, or does not appear on the town’s website. During last week’s meeting, town attorney Bill McNally explained that he had examined the document and made changes to several sections that needed to be updated and brought into compliance with state law. He asked the Town Council to look over the changes and explained any revisions would have to be sent to the General Assembly for changes. McNally said the town would have to act with some speed to get the measures passed during this session of the legislature. “If everything’s ready to go, we still should be fine sending it after the Feb. 7 meeting,” McNally said. The hurried aspect of Thursday’s meeting is causing some concern from the community and on The Citizen’s website. “What are these charter changes that are so critical that they can not be done at a regular scheduled council meeting? Why did the council not announce that they were planning on holding this meeting at the regular council meeting and explain why?” asked one blogger. login to post comments |
