Surprise meeting in Tyrone for multiple changes to town’s charter

Less than a month into its tenure, the new Tyrone town government is already doing things a little differently.

Town Clerk Valerie Caldwell confirmed Tuesday the Town Council will hold a special meeting this Thursday at 7 p.m.

The two subjects to be discussed are changes to the charter and an executive session for personnel.

Caldwell could not comment on why the meeting was not announced at last week’s meeting, or does not appear on the town’s website.

During last week’s meeting, town attorney Bill McNally explained that he had examined the document and made changes to several sections that needed to be updated and brought into compliance with state law.

He asked the Town Council to look over the changes and explained any revisions would have to be sent to the General Assembly for changes.

McNally said the town would have to act with some speed to get the measures passed during this session of the legislature.

“If everything’s ready to go, we still should be fine sending it after the Feb. 7 meeting,” McNally said.

The hurried aspect of Thursday’s meeting is causing some concern from the community and on The Citizen’s website.

“What are these charter changes that are so critical that they can not be done at a regular scheduled council meeting? Why did the council not announce that they were planning on holding this meeting at the regular council meeting and explain why?” asked one blogger.

Oldbeachbear what are you so defensive about? You and your fellow bloggers screamed for open government but let anyone question the actions of this "new group" and you start attacking them? Why? You helped put this new group in but I have been around since the 80's and there has not been any elected officials previously in Tyrone that have tried to exclude the citizens like this group. A newspaper reporter job is to ask questions. The press helps keep a government honest and accountable. Do you not want honest and accountable government? The citizens did not ask for this called meeting, it was a council decision and they should be held accountable for their actions. If they are not willing to provide any explaination for the urgency of this meeting nor willing to tell the citizens what is going on, then you have truly put the wolf in the hen house.

Let me say it real slow for you...so you don't miss anything....Not posting signs on property to be rezoned...is not what anyone would call O.P.E.N ....G.O.V.E.R.N.M.E.N.T...

Giving a developer friend, or boss of relative, the ok to bill on land with a large power line covering a great area of it ...not to mention a CEMETERY in the middle, with no due process for the citizens, that is not open government. Giving that same developer the ok to have an 'easement' for a road into said subdivision, so he wouldn't have the expense of a road, even though the town charter calls for curbed and guttered roads in a subdivsion....that is ok right? This also deprived the citizens that bought in there of door front services they will have to pay for. Simple things like trash pickup and mail.
I never saw a meeting where any of this was discussed...can you tell any of us when this was? I'm all ears.

John Thompson, why don't you get some stone tablets for your one and only discontented blogger to write on. So much for unbias reporting or even reporting at all.

to post signs on any and all property that are going to be considered for changes...I heard the sign posting was taken out unknown to the citizens. So much for you and your one sore looser blogger who is crying out for ethical goverment...too bad we haven't seen it in Tyrone or his 'watch'
