Count on it: God is in controlThis year has gotten off to a bizarre start on some fronts. Along with the grisly Gary Hilton alleged murders, several weird events have made the news. Earlier this month, a tracking dog apparently stepped on a loaded shotgun in the bed of his owner’s pickup truck, causing the gun to fire a fatal blast into the man’s thigh during a goose hunt. Perry Price shot a goose, set his gun in the back of his truck and was about to open the tailgate to release his dog when the shotgun blast went through the truck and into Price’s leg. Paw prints from the dog were found on the muddy shotgun, according to sheriff’s department authorities. Evidently, the dog, excitedly jumping around the truck bed, stepped on the gun, releasing the safety and hitting the trigger just right. Then, in New York City, two men wheeled a dead man through the streets in an office chair to a check-cashing store and tried to cash his social security check before being arrested on fraud charges, according to police reports. Associated Press writer Marcus Freeman reported that David J. Dalaia and James O’Hare pushed Virgilio Cintron’s body from the Manhatten apartment that O’Hare and Cintron shared to Pay-O-Matic, about a block away. Spokesman Paul Browne said witnesses told police that they saw the two men pushing the chair with Cintron flopping from side to side and the two individuals propping him up, attempting to keep him from flopping from side to side. The men left Cintron’s body outside the store, went inside and tried to cash his $355 check. The store’s clerk knew Cintron and asked the men where he was. They said they’d be right back with him. Just as the two were about to wheel Cintron’s body into the check-cashing store, emergency medical technicians arrived. Then police arrived to arrest Dalaia and O’Hare. Then there’s the “meanest mom in the world.” The AP reported that Jane Hambleton, after finding alcohol in her son’s car, placed an ad to sell the car: “OLDS1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don’t love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under the front seat. $3700 /offer. Call meanest mom on the planet.” When she bought the car last Thanksgiving, she set two rules for her 19-year-old: no booze, and always keep it locked. Her son said the booze belonged to a passenger and was not his. He was not pleased, to say the least, but the mom stood her ground and made her point: abide by my rules clearly stated on the front end or suffer the consequences. These events remind us that life is full of uncertainty, and sometimes even danger. And every decision carries a repercussion. Sometimes we pay the price of using poor judgment. All that is to say we’re not too far into 2008 once again to seek God’s guidance and protection in this New Year. Actually, we need to seek God Himself every day. As Proverbs 3:5, 6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Life gets crazy, but God is in control. Let’s trust Him and place our confidence in Him. login to post comments | Dr. David L.
