Life in Mayb... FayettevilleI love living here. I lived the first 18 years of my life elsewhere (mostly Decatur), but my parents moved here during the 70's white flight out of DeKalb County. Dad built his home here and we moved in 1977. The problem was (and really, still is), there was nothing for a young adult to do. We had a Dairy Queen and Melears, and a tiny movie theater. You bought your food at Food Giant (where Big Lots is now) until Wooo! Big Star opened up (where Michaels is now). For any entertainment (i.e., concerts), you headed for Atlanta. I've moved away a few times, but came back in 86 when I bought my first house, a starter home until I could get my bigger house. But life gets in the way of plans, and so I still am in my starter home, and now ponder why I would leave since it is perfect for a retiree (sigh, I got my first invite to AARP this week). But, I have at least 15 more years to work, my house is too small for the new husband, his son, and my one daughter remaining at home, so I've been looking for houses. Lots to pick from, but way, WAY out of my price range. The ones that are in my price range are in North Fayette and Southeast Fayette (no and NO!). Some of these houses I looked at when they were being built in the 80's and 90's, and even then I thought they were too much! I've also been looking for my oldest daughter, but where are the starter homes? Not here in Fayetteville. Closest I've found is the townhomes that are really 1 bedroom apartments on Jeff Davis, but even those are going in the low to mid 100's. If she could qualify, she could buy my house for the price of the townhome! Oh well, I'll just keep checking ziprealty.com and keep my eye out for a fixer-upper. Hey, can anybody tell me why, when in the rest of the city we're laying cart paths (which I am thrilled with), the new sidewalks downtown are still standard size, and they're brick? I don't think a golf cart is going to fit on those, so I guess the cart paths will be restricted to Redwine and Grady? Kind of like roads to nowhere, since shopping and entertainment are north and east of us, with no cart paths. At least when the path on Grady is done, kids can ride their bikes to the Elementary and Middle Schools. Is there a master plan to link these paths to shopping? Will they cross 54 and enter the Villages area so we can get to the Ampitheatre or the High School complexes? I like the thought of buying a golf cart for my 16 yo instead of a car, knowing that they would be restricted to redwine, grady, and the schools. Back to work...
