Shots fired as cops break up mob at teen’s birthday partyTue, 01/08/2008 - 5:10pm

Sheriff’s detectives are working to identify a person who shot several times in the air while an out-of-control birthday party was being broken up at a north Fayette home late Saturday evening. The shots occurred as the party, organized by a parent for a teenager, was being shut down after about 200 people showed up, said Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. “Some partygoer became disgruntled and fired several rounds in the air,” Pope said. The partygoer was unhappy that it was being shut down just after 11 p.m., Pope said. The reason for the large showing of people was because the party was advertised on the MySpace website, drawing interest from people who didn’t know the hosts or anyone else attending, Pope said. Teens should be careful not to advertise parties or other gatherings on MySpace for fear of attracting unwanted people, Pope said. “That was the worst thing in the world to do,” Pope said, adding that it was fortunate that no one was hurt. The incident occurred at 155 Laydon Avenue just off Kenwood Road in the northeast section of the county, Pope said. Detectives recovered shell casings and also have some tag numbers of cars to follow up on, Pope said. No one was hurt, as police followed up with area hospitals to make sure no one was treated for a gunshot wound, Pope added. Alcohol was apparently not served at the party, deputies said. The party was being thrown by the honoree’s parents, Pope added. login to post comments |
