9 from Riverdale arrested for gun store theft

$2K reward offered for info on guns

All nine suspects tied to the smash-and-grab burglary of 86 guns from Autrey’s Armory Dec. 5 have been arrested, police announced Monday afternoon.

Each of the nine are from Riverdale and are alleged members of the Southside Mafia gang, police said. The big break in the case came because none of the stolen guns had magazines with them, said Inv. John Shelton of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

“They had to buy magazines to make them working guns,” Shelton said.

Only a few of the guns have been recovered so far. But now there’s a $2,000 reward for information leading to the location of the guns or information leading to the people in possession of the weapons.

As many as eight sheriff’s detectives worked on the case at any one time, pulling long days as they knocked on doors in Clayton County asking questions and looking for clues or anything suspicious that might lead to the suspects.

From the start they had little to go on but a poor surveillance video that showed how methodical the burglary was, police said. It didn’t show any of the suspects' faces well enough to have any of the suspects identified, police said.

But the old-fashioned detective work paid off, as leads kept rolling until all nine suspects were arrested, Shelton said. All have been ordered to be held without bond pending their trial with the exception of one of the suspects who was arrested today and will have a bond hearing tomorrow.

Fayette detectives said the cooperation from other law enforcement agencies was invaluable, particularly lauding the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Clayton County and DeKalb County police departments, the U.S. Marshalls Southeastern Fugitive Task Force and federally licensed firearms dealers.

Although the nine suspects all face burglary charges, it’s possible they may be prosecuted at the federal level where its a crime to steal guns from a federally licensed firearms dealer, said ATF Special Agent Marc Jackson. He noted that the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Fayette County District Attorney’s Office are involved with the case.

“Suffice it to say this investigation is far from over,” Jackson said.

Getting the stolen guns back is of significant importance because they are more likely to be used in crimes, Jackson said.

“Firearms enthusiasts don’t steal from gun dealers,” Jackson said. “Felons, gang members and juveniles do.”

One of the suspects arrested was 16 years old and is already serving a detention sentence, police said. The others arrested include Melvin “Melvo” Johnson, Kissan “Big Boy” Lynch, Roland “Gucchi” Williams, Brandon “Mickey Mouse” McClure, Fredrick “Fred” Anderson, Cornelius “Trigger Boy” Heard and Anthony “2 Tall” Alston.
Each was charged with felony burglary.

Alston turned himself in Monday morning after learning on the street that the fugitive task force was on his trail.

The suspects’ alleged connections to the Southside Mafia gang is significant in part because that gang was also implicated in the 2004 shooting at a Riverdale park that resulted in the death of a young child, police said.

The suspects used a stolen truck from Clayton County to pry the burglar bars off of the business to gain entry. Once inside they smashed glass cases and used bolt cutters to wrest the guns free, tossing them into a plastic garbage can. The whole burglary lasted just a few minutes.

Shelton posted the surveillance video on YouTube in an effort to drum up tips from the community.
In addition to the outstanding cooperation from other agencies, he also lauded the hard work of his fellow Fayette detectives.

“If not for these people working their tails off every day, it would not have gotten done,” Shelton said.

This is just great work on the part of the Fayette County Sheriff's department. Congratulations to each member! Sadly, this type of work is just going to grow. Now, hope the DA will live up to the standards established by the Sheriff's Department and prosecute to the FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW!!

while we're putting up the wall on the border with Mexico why don't we also put one around the northern, northwest and northeast parts of Fayette County. Only 1/2 joking!

weave a circle 'round him thrice and close your eyes with holy dread, for he on honeydew hath fed and drunk the milk of paradise. STC-KK

5% more sales tax in order to put up toll booths on all roads into the county from the north. We would go back to a thug free suburban paradise, crime would plummet by over 80%. Ahhhhhhhhh, oh sorry, i started day dreaming again.

BTW, on the crime reports for Fayette County, do they take down the place of residence of the criminal? I'm sure those stats would help propel the toll booth to fruition.

We need inflated prices as a dissentive to coming here. Also we need to get rid of the some 600 shopping centers that have opened up (both empty and leased) in the past couple years and just keep the pavilion so we can contain the crime in one area. While I'm in La-La Land, we should also do like Chicago and charge $20 to enter the county for those without Fayette County tags.

An extra "crime tax" on all stores north of Banks Rd would probably do us a lot of good. Most of the stores offered in the pavilion are just about as close to Point South as the Wal Mart and others in Riverdale. if it was more expensive to shop in Fayetteville, most of the thugs might decide to shop in their home county. Man that would be sweet.

but thats all OT, WAY TO GO FCSO!!!!!!!!

I agree with you too. Isn't it true that when you purchase large items,ie: vehicles, appliances, furniture, that you are asked for your zip code and don't you get charged the tax from that area? You should have to show your license to prove where you live and pay accordingly. An inconvenience? Perhaps but don't you think it would cut down on the people "shopping" here that just want to cause a problem?

Yup, with those names, they are Triads come to America to rob and kill us besides taint our food. Not innocent blacks from Riverdale! If we are to water board, can we also use tax payer money and build a border fence? Tired of those with a modicum of intelligence wasting it on crimes and imagined lifestyles of the MTV images, instead of becoming useful members of society. Send them to Afghanistan or Iraq. Let them kill each other or the terrorists take them out instead of our soldiers. You know the English had the right idea with convicts in Australia. They did eventually become upstanding citizens.

Many were also sent here by the Brits who were given the choice of a boat ride to us or the pokey! Some were for religious reasons also.

So more alleged gang members heading to Fayette County to commit crime? Hope the other's see where they end up. Thanks to the police agents for doing their jobs.

When the video of the robbery first was posted, someone ask why everyone jumped to the conclusion that the scum who did it were black.

Let's see, "Melvin “Melvo” Johnson, Kissan “Big Boy” Lynch, Roland “Gucchi” Williams, Brandon “Mickey Mouse” McClure, Fredrick “Fred” Anderson, Cornelius “Trigger Boy” Heard and Anthony “2 Tall” Alston."

That person was correct, how could we have been so careless..... this now has all indications of being an Asian gang.

After typing a comment arguing that it doesn't sounds like an Asian gang, I picked up on the sarcasm. As I typed the last line, I said, "wait a second..."
Wow, I didn't get good sleep last night. Thanks, cause that made me laugh at myself pretty hard.

Good job. Now lets hope the judges and DA do just as good and not let them bond out. Let them rot in jail.

Thank you Fayette County Sheriff's Dept. and the other law enforcement agencies. Your hard work got this scum off the streets. Hopefully they will tell you where the guns are.

Be safe

I have absolutely no problem with sending these predators to Gitmo and water boarding them until they fess up and these stolen weapons are recovered. I truly believe that lives will by saved by water boarding these pieces of trash.

Waterboarding saves lives - it doesn't take them.
