The African American doesn’t need the ‘800 Register’ to have documentation of his place in American History/Culture.

African American Lives tells many stories and yet one. Its six hundred and eleven biographies span more than four centuries, presenting the lives of men and women whose backgrounds and achievements are as varied as their talents, skills, and knowledge. Taken together these lives of distinction attest to the integral character of African Americans to the life of this nation. . .to their abiding influence on American culture and institutions.”

Henry Louis Gates and Evelyn Brooks Higgenbotham edited this book. (Harvard professors and African Americans). Oxford University Press publishes the book.

Graham, the author of the ‘800 Register’ is an elitist. Read today’s AJC – and note the comments of the members of the top family (other than the Kings) in Atlanta. [The Dobbs and the Jackson’s]

If one were looking to encourage their sons and daughters to achieve – a good parent would refer them to Gates book rather than Grahams. The founders of Jack and Jill instilled in their children the desire to use their talents in service to the community. Just as there are ‘white’ people who ‘need’ to be publicly listed for validation – there are also ‘black’ people who have the same need. God bless ‘em. If you want to know who are the real contributors to African American culture – take a look at Gates book.

It’s in the library!

The best of the best, of black society, in a social register format. I think this is great and I commend Graham for putting this together. It helps to break the stereotype we have, and the mindset that if a black person is wealthy then they must be an athlete or rap star.

I've seen the whitey-white 'Who's Who' in American society book, which would make most of us lose our lunch because it is so snooty, however, it's time that black society have the same social register and be proud of their accomplishments.

I have several friends in the Jack and Jill club and I love being around them - they are extremely educated, hard working, and most are more driven than I am (I am white). Their children are all on the honor roll and have set high goals for their kids, and they are all awesome. What a difference good parenting has on kids, regardless of race (listen up parents of Andre Scott). I have no doubt that my black friends in Fayette, all lawyers and business professionals, would and should be in Grahams book.

I'm proud to know them.

The Who's Who book targets anyone they think will buy their over priced book. They ask for pictures, but I don't remember them asking for race. It really is just a scam they make money by selling the people they "feature" in it, the book. They target low income rural markets, because many of the people there are trying to be "somebody".

No one needs Whos Who it is a big sales scam.

I don't know how they get people's names and addresses.

Thanks for the civil reply...just tryin' to inject some humor. This board is so serious, which is good, but we ain't eggzakly gonna solve the world's problems here. Everybody is makin' some great , relevant points, but we mustn't take ourselves or our points of view too seriously or we run the risk of being like those we gripe about here! Anyway, you seem like a good sport and like most everybody here are probably very nice once one gets to know you. Hope all enjoyed this gorgeous day ! Peace!

I was working, I did not leave until 1. I had to go get regeisterd to vote since we no longer live in the same district, I saw a red converible- I almost beeped but then I saw it was a lady- so and she was driving slow so I knew it wasn't you, I had to pass her. I will keep looking while driving- I am always in PTC.

I do hope kbets the situation is okay, it's been on my mind lately.
I hope they let us know. It's a long time if he's still in a coma, maybe they will see this and let us know.

It is beautiful- my relatives still live in N.C. and my Dad said it snowed a couple of inches there a couple of days ago, but he says now it's like spring. Sometimes I miss a little snow.

My son has been to N.C. and even got to go sleding with his cousin when he was younger- when he was 2 it snowed at Christmas when we went, I tried to get him to walk in it, it was about 2ft. deep scared him to death. We don't ski, I am too cold natured for that.

I have to pick up my son from school, I'll be looking- you know one day I have to see you.

One day I did see a car back in the summer and it was a converitable but this guy had a little boy in it. Was that you????

Have a great day- if you hear about kbets let me know. Thanks

Even before my mom and sister passed about 2 and half years ago, I am sensitive to people that hurt. Even though my mom and sister have passed as hard as it is daily and I mean daily- it hurts deeply- so I feel even more so for people- even if I haven't gone though the same thing- the pain of loosing them would have been unbearable if I didn't believe in God.

I still hurt over them, I don't think you ever get over it, I think Muddle described it as C.S.Lewis says it like a amputee and I agree for me it's like a stab or two pieces of my heart that can't be replaced. It's hard- Are you parents still living? I have to say loosing them is the hardest most difficult thing to go through- but I do trust God, He's still Good- has blest me loads- my husband, child, friends and your friendship even though I can't see you - just see this cool avatar. BTW mine is the best than yours. Ha.

I have to get my son or I will get a ticket. Later - Go drive in the great weather. Feel sorry for me I just have a sunroof. Ha.

This so so funny to me, I have had two parents say to me my child was listening to music or music was on and they started dancing and I said how did you learn to dance that way and they said Mrs. bpr. My husband is much better than me. Michael is like a slinky snake, I want to dance like that. Well one thing they will remember I taught them to dance. Ha.

Now that's where I just absolutely have to draw the line.

Here's one of the grotesque skeletons in my closet: In the early 80s, when my wife and I were in our early 20s, we owned and listened to popular albums by Michael Jackson (Thriller) and Lionel Richie (Dancin' on the Ceiling). We even had some Kenny Rogers (You gotta know when to hold 'em) and Alabama (Take me down where I wanna be).

I say to my own shame that I was utterly unaware of the new and remarkable talent that was Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The 80s were a sheer travesty when it came to music. The Allmans spent that decade divided between doing nothing and producing crap with a distinctly 80s sound. This was the decade of glam rock with all of the noodling lead solos. One big exception: U2's Joshua Tree album. Otherwise, SRV was one of the few carrying the torch of real music that focused on musicianship rather than showmanship, glitz and pyrotechnics. (I'm trying to imagine Neil Young or Jerry Garcia moonwalking across the stage.)

Anyway, I had not always been that way. I had been an Allman Brothers/Dead/CSN&Y/Zeppelin/etc. head but suffered from a musical brain fart in my early married life once we started having kids. Call it my "conservative turn."

I have since repented of my lapse into pop and soft rock, and now proclaim the gospel of blues and jam bands from the mountain tops. Smiling

The original 'Social Register' was created back in the 1880's (a listing of old money aristocrats) and one must be nominated and voted on, in order to be included in the book. You can't purchase a spot for yourself, in this particular register. This is the Social Register I was referring to in my original posts, not the other Registers or Who's Who books that focus on a particular industry or profession, where you can purchase a spot for yourself.

Yeah, "scam" is exactly the right word.

There are academic versions of these. Every other year I get a letter: "You have been nominated for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities!" All I have to do is submit my information, and, perhaps, agree to buy a copy.

It's pure crap.

I've received those letters in years when I've done absolutely nothing that should single me out from the thousands of other university professors in the country who have contributed much more than I have.

There's a similar thing--an invitation to take part in the "Oxford Roundtable." Each year, these invitations are sent out. To take part, you have to pay a substantial amount. I have to suppose that the thing actually takes place. But this is just another "vanity" affair. A colleague received one of these a couple of years ago. His initial reaction was to be flattered. Then I showed him my letter....

Why should I care about anyone's accumulation of material wealth? The register seems to me to perpetuate yet another stereotype: that of the liberated black whose view of human flourishing essentially involves material possessions. (I'm reading Brokaw's new book, Boom!. One comment from one of the black leaders in the Atlanta area is that Martin would have been surprised to see how large some of the homes of blacks are. Somehow, I'm not sure that such things were at the core of the Dream.)

Here's an idea: A register of America's most virtuous people. The only catch, though, is that, since humility is a virtue, anyone who agrees to be listed is automatically disqualified.

Black crime (smash and grab at gun store), gang activity (Fayette High), and welfare moms (Leticia), have been the main topics on this blog for several days. With that in mind, it is great to see a positive story about black society, even if it does involve a snooty social register - I still believe it is great for their culture and maybe something they can aspire to, instead of the alternative.

Granted, most of us don't care about a Social Register, for whites or blacks and most of those who read this 'book' are those that are actually in the thing. To each his/her own.

With Joel Osteen and Creflo Dollar, preaching 'Prosperity Gospel', maybe this is the new 'flock' that is being created - one of wealth and stature. And maybe that is a good thing. It sure beats trailer trash and welfare moms.

The Sheriff's Depts. report said they were black males. The officer in charge of looking at and enhancing the images from security cameras is very good. If they used a digital color camera he can get it down to the color of their eyes in 5 mins. or less. The eyes of each individual is as different as each persons fingerprints, and if you have these cameras, it is just as easy to track. If this officer said they are black they probably are.

No, the complete report would not appear in the paper, if thats what you mean (just like our work). The original report in this paper 12-5-07 said the Sheriff's Dept was looking for 6 black males. Now the story is they arrested 14 people, but no description of the people.

If they had the digital color cameras, the info from the security cameras was probably very helpful. Inspite of the great lengths those criminals went to so as not to be caught, it would have been very easy to enhance the images. They think they pulled a fast one with the smoke, but my point was technology is way ahead of them. Easy to identify criminals and it does hold up in court.
