14 arrested for gun store burglary

A total of 14 people have been arrested in connection with the Dec. 5 smash and grab burglary of about 75-80 guns from Autrey’s Armory in north Fayette County, sheriff’s deputies announced today.

At least some of the suspects are gang members, according to Lt. Belinda McCastle of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

More information will be revealed in a press conference scheduled for noon Monday. Stay tuned to TheCitizen.com for updates as they become available.

The robbery occurred around 4 a.m. and was caught on footage from the store’s security camera. They used a stolen truck from Clayton County to pry off the burglar bars to the business, and then six men entered the store, smashing glass cases and using bolt cutters to cut the cables securing the rifles.

They got away with mostly Sig Sauer and Glock pistols, most of which didn’t have magazines. The guns were tossed into a blue trash can and a smoke device was detonated in an apparent attempt to obscure the view on the security camera.

Although the video shows six men entering the store, deputies have not said how the other eight persons arrested were connected to the scheme.

Autrey’s Armory is located off Ga. Highway 314 near Roberts Road north of Fayetteville.

I am very glad that the cops were committed to solving this crime and I hope that the guns are recovered as soon as possible. I just want to be sure the county does not rush to judgment on these young men. They have arrested more people than were involved so not everyone is guilty. The strategy of "arrest everyone and don't let lack of evidence get in the way" would steal freedom from those who were not involved. Don't become a gang of enraged citizens who advocate conviction before the facts are presented. These are very serious crimes and the young men, no matter their race or social standing, deserve a fair day in court. I pray that the members of Fayette county have peace and safety and I also pray that those who may be innocent be granted the same thing.

The invetigators from the S.O. were required to obtain arrest warrants for the 14 arrested. This meant they presented their case to a magistrate judge who determined there was enough probable cause to issue the warrant. Chances are the 14 arrested were involved, will all of them be found guilty, probably not, there are sympathetic juries, along with incompetent prosecution, and good defense lawyers. The strategy of "arrest everyone and dont let the lack of eveidence get in the way" is BS, this isnt the south in the 50's and 60's. Let us all watch this play. PS They weren't caught stealing beer, it was 80+ guns that are not being used for what they were designed,I am most positive of that.

Way to take a bite out of crime!!! Now, I hope they get the book thrown at them. We need to send a message and become a stand out in the metro area; Fayette County gives NO BREAKS!!! Fayette County is the toughest on crime in the metro area! I feel if this holds true and its shown time and time again, it will lessen the amount of crime here. GREAT JOB GUYS!!!

I hope they got all of the criminals in this crime. Do they have all the weapons accounted for? 75-80 guns out there in who knows what hands? If these are the criminals may they be incarcerated for a long time. I just hope they didn't sell the weapons to other criminals. Our streets are still not safe.

Since Dec. 5 - I have had a feeling of insecurity knowing that somewhere in our community were individuals who had the fire power to do great harm. Kudos to Fayette County law enforcement!

I wouldn't be feeling too safe yet. They didn't mention if any of the guns were recovered. And I bet these thugs weren't from our community but from Clayton County.
But I agree, our law enforcement is great!

You're so right - back to insecurity and reality. I hope it's published when the weapons are recovered.

Don't rest too easy. It seems many of our regular posters here are well armed and a bit high strung.

I can't speak to the "high strung" part of your post but as for being well armed, rest assured.

What exactly do you think was going to become of those 80 guns that were stolen? It would be good to hear that all of them were recovered.

There's a good 'letter to the editor' you should read.

Ga.’s gun laws – even for those with permits – make sitting ducks of us all

When criminals have guns the only way to win is to have bigger, better and more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens.

Not that they don't try but, 'there's never a cop around when you need one'.

It's a lot easier to 911 once the criminal is dead.

This whole guns for self defense issue is indeed a difficult one to get to the bottom of. There are good arguements to be made in both camps. If you want to boil it down to a simple case of " a competent and decent citizen has a gun on him while a bad guy commits a crime and thus gets the drop on the bad guy and saves the day" well then, yeah, that scenario would seem to justify carrying a gun for self protection. Unfortunately, the off chance for such a scenario to go down like this falls short of a convincing arguement for arming everybody in the hopes of deterring crime. We live in a society predicated upon the rule of law. In such a society, people go about the business of living, expecting within reason for others to behave lawfully. You don't drive a tank to work because some random nut might shoot at you even though it is possible. But you might, for example, use caution in a bad part of town at night, that's where the reasonable expectation part comes in. Most crime happens suddenly and without warning for the victim. Just because we can truck out the rare case where a bystander with a gun could have saved the day doesn't make up for the myriad problems posed by thousands of would-be Dirty Harrys drawing a pistol at every perceived threat. Few people are competent and capable of safely handling firearms loaded and ready for self defense. Few people are capable of behaving calmly and rationally in a dangerous situation. NO people are legally or morally entitled to act as judge, jury, and or executioner simply because they carry a weapon. It's bad enough that we let everyone above a certain age handle a steering wheel, I certainly wouldn't feel safer being anywhere where all the yahoos around me are carrying guns. Like I say, this is an issue that can't be decided in a few blog posts, but these are points I feel need to be made to appeal to our better angels. Let the law and law enforcement work. Let society work. We don't need to go back to the Wild West. Just my 2 cts and thanks for listening.

LordByron, glad to have you on the blog.

"You don't drive a tank to work because some random nut might shoot at you even though it is possible." You’re correct, we don't drive tanks nor should we have to. Although there are times when trying to commute to and from Atlanta that I truly wish I did drive a tank.

An additional thought on that subject would be the requirement that every few years everyone has to re-take a drivers proficiently test. The state of GA ranks as one of the lowest for experienced drivers actually knowing the rules of the road.

As to you statement of: "But you might, for example, use caution in a bad part of town at night, that's where the reasonable expectation part comes in." I personally don't go into a "bad part of town" at night or in broad daylight. Odds are there's nothing there I can't buy somewhere else.

The only real problem I have with your logic is that the "bad part of town" can be anywhere. The Avenue, Kroger/Target, Wal-Mart/Home Depot, local apartment complex or the parking lot where I work. The location of crime is just as random as the type of crime. (No I don't work at a Post Office)

As for, "NO people are legally or morally entitled to act as judge, jury, and or executioner simply because they carry a weapon." it is somewhat inaccurate. In the state of GA, yes you can be, legally. See "Georgia 'shoot first' law takes effect"

I agree with your statement, "Few people are competent and capable of safely handling firearms loaded and ready for self defense. Few people are capable of behaving calmly and rationally in a dangerous situation." As I have expressed many times before people that have guns need to become and stay proficient with them. That means taking classes, often. Not just one but one every few months.

There are always news articles where trained police officers have shot at a suspect several times and missed. Happens all the time, anybody can panic.

So like driving a car, before you get a license you practice, practice, practice, take classes and then practice some more. A concealed weapon permit should be no different.

OUTSTANDING JOB!!! Way to go Fayette Co Sheriff's Department.
If other agencies were involved in the arrest, hat's off to them too.
Our streets are a little safer now with them in custody.
Again, thanks for a job well done. Your very much appreciated by me.

Just wondering, could there be any connection between the burglary/robbery of ammo store and Student arrested at FCHS Both articles stated "gang related". All arrested very close together. Maybe 1 person arrested decided he was not going down alone, and wanted to take his "friends" along with him. Who knows, just feel better about the arrest in general.
