What's with the guns on New Years?!

McGannahan Skjellyfetti's picture

I may be relatively new to these parts and this area of ATL., but what is the deal with the guns, LOUD, dynamite like fireworks and in some areas (U.C., Fairburn) machine gun fire??? on New Year's EVE? I can understand the fireworks somewhat, but it was a little ridonculous this year. I'm just curious as to how some of you other people out there feel. Maybe it's just me/us but, seriously it's just a bit much...not to mention probably a tad dangerous and I'm thinking maybe illegal dontcha think?

Well.... we shot off 5 mortar-like fireworks at exactly 12:00, sorry to say. They were so loud that the sound echoed out over the lake and behind us up the mtn. (central PTC). After the first one went off, I ran into the house - scary things - but the party-goer kept loading the 'tube' with 'em. They were real pretty when they exploded though.

We were in Tennessee this past summer and picked up several cool fireworks, not knowing what the heck these were. I don't think we'll be buying those kind anymore.

I guess I have become a redneck! Smiling

That's not the same as shooting randomly in the air........it may be loud, but fun and not as dangerous to the neighborhood. Look, if you're on 25 acres in Pike county somewhere, although still not quite what I'd be doing on my land, but knock yourself out. And believe me, there was a time when I'd probably do it anyway Smiling Plus, I don't think you're a redneck.....at least not yet Smiling

just something that is done here in the south. During my bike commutes in LA, I would see several spent rounds laying in the streets after New Years, July Fourth, and Cinco de Mayo (I did say it was LA). Some cultures have this "thing" about shooting guns in the air to celebrate.

Where I am from you would say they don't have a lick of sense. Don't you agree- yes- it happens everywhere.

And, if you call the police chances are they won't be able to help in any way. I say this because - a gentleman that I work with was telling me that he came home from church on New Years Eve to find something dusty on his dining room table, he looked up to see a hole
in his ceiling; saw the same dust on the carpet and looked down and found a bullet! He called the police and was told they would file a report, but not much they could actually do.

I was young once, and remember being silly and foolish, but I certainly don't remember carrying on like folks do today!

I lived in Upstate NY for years, it was, how should I say it, as rednecky/hickish as you can get and never was it like I've witnessed here over the past several years. That being said, it seems as if these people are firing in the air at some imaginary Sherman in the sky....in to the sky!!! Where do they think that stuff goes? Does it just trail off into the ozone or something? I know of a young woman who was at the peach drop a few years back and out of nowhere she feels a sharp stinging in the side of her neck. She immediately falls to the ground and to this day she has a bullet lodged in the side of the back of her neck. She's in excruciating daily pain but realizes she is VERY, VERY LUCKY. This was in the middle of downtown Atlanta....a supposedly major, metropolitan city. In all my years of living in metro NYC (yes, lived there too) I never once heard of anything like that at the Ball drop. I'm just ranting I know but I don't get so much about many things in this area and this is one of them and it is potentially and foolishly dangerous to me and my family. We were all young and foolish once but this baffles me. At least some can agree with me on this one and, like spy said, at least we have the right to defend ourselves....I just never thought I'd have to carry just to feel safe.

There are a few backwards idiots everywhere, and they ruin it for everyone else.

I don't understand it either, so I can't explain what some people are thinking when they fire a gun into the air. Where I grew up everyone went out of their way NOT to look like an uneducated hick. The people with the fireworks and the guns shooting in the air are the same people that get angry anytime a comedian gives a negative portrayal of the south.

Ignorance and selfishness know no regional boundaries and the South has no monopoly on either. Peace and love is the way to educate those we don't agree with, not hate and venom. Peace to all this holiday season!

what Sky said, that pretty well sums it up.

McGannahan, I'm hoping that you will come across more people who are kind, caring, and all those good things we like in neighbors; than the negatives.

You are so right, I am from the mountains of N.C., thank God I don't talk that way, and I use to hate The Bev. Hillbillies, people were just like that. Now, I do like Andy Griffith- I knew people just like that. btw my husband is not a hick- I would not have married him if he was - hey we were so and still are into music- notice it's not the hick kind.

Warren Haynes? Now you're talking!

I hated to see Dicky Betts leave the Bros. several years ago, but the combination of Warren and Derek is simply unbelievable!

My son-in-law, who lives in Asheville with my daughter and family, got free tix to this year's Christmas jam. Mule played until late in the night/early morning. Must have been incredible.

Gotta love the Bros. with and w/o Dickey. The combo of Warren and Derek is awesome and when they bring on the special guests it's priceless. Keep on muddling!

A couple of anecdotes:

First, my oldest son is--without any bragging here whatsoever--a phenomenal lead and slide guitarist. He's now 32 and just keeps getting better.

Back in about '98, he answered a message on a musicians' message board for someone wanting musicians to jam with. The message was from Vaylor Trucks--Butch's son and Derek's cousin. (Oh, and he's the kid on the cover of the ABB album "Brothers and Sisters.") My son spent an evening jamming with Vaylor at his place in Buckhead. The next night, he and I went to the Frogwings show, where Derek was performing (with Jimmy Herring, Butch, Edwin McCain, etc) with Vaylor sitting in. After the show, we met with Vaylor and Derek, and they invited my son to go with them to a jazz show in town the next night. He got cold feet and declined! I've always wondered what might have developed with his music had he gone!

Here's a weird one. The evening that my son jammed with Vaylor, he shared some of his own music that he had written years before. One piece titled "Mad Hatter," has a very intricate double lead guitar passage. He and Vaylor played it together. A year or two later, Frogwings released a CD "Croakin' at Toads" that included a song (Kick N Bach) that has, note-for-note, the identical passage! No kidding here. Coincidence?

In '99 my wife and I drove our 2-seater Del Sol all the way to Denver to see the ABB at Red Rocks. We were there for Derek's official debut with the band (though he had sat in before). He was clearly nervous and timid, sticking to basic scales. Nothing like now.

Seen him with Clapton? How appropriate for him to be performing Layla with him.

Is right HERE!

There is a network of musicians that, in one way or another, intersect with the Allman Brothers Band. The musicianship, improvisation and creativity is unparalleled.

I must say, I do like your taste in music (very similar to mine).

You must be an old hippie at heart.

My spouse just bought us 'The Best of Buffalo Springfield' for Christmas (Mr. Soul, Blackbird, Broken Arrow). I've requested Canned Heat's, Cookbook, for my bday. Love the old 60's music.

Happy New Year muddle!

Yes, it is illegal to shoot a gun at night, unless someone is threatening your life or the life of your family. The beautiful thing here is you have the right to protect the lives of your loved ones as well as yourself.

I thought the state fire marshall put a ban on all outdoor burning and fireworks because of the drought?? I did not see any news story that said he reversed his decision. I think we are still in a drought.

You can call the cops in your area about the noise. or You can sit back and hope the offensive people get hurt with their fireworks....then they will stop.
