Bring one for the chipperThu, 12/27/2007 - 4:36pm

Area residents can now drop off Christmas trees that will be chipped into mulch or used as a wildlife habitat at this year’s “Bring One for the Chipper.” The event educates the public on recycling and environmental conservation. It also allows communities to put discarded Christmas trees to good use. The program assists local governments in complying with Georgia’s yard trimmings ban implemented in September 1996. The ban prohibits the disposal of yard trimmings in lined municipal solid waste landfills. Statewide last year 241,589 trees were recycled into mulch and nearly 10,400 trees were put into lakes for fish habitats. Since the program began, 4.8 million trees have been diverted from landfill disposal. Last year, 439 trees were dropped off in Coweta. Sponsors of the program are The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Keep Georgia Beautiful Program, The Home Depot,Davey’s Tree Expert Company, Coweta County Environmental Management and the 4-H Club of Coweta County. Residents can drop off Christmas trees at one of 11 Coweta County Compactor Sites now. On January 5, 2008 trees can be dropped at the Temple Avenue Recreation campus from 9 am -4 pm. Seedlings will only be available at the Old Fair Ground on Temple Avenue on Saturday, January 5, 2006 For information, call 770-254-3785. login to post comments |
