A man who snatched a woman’s purse at the Fayette Pavilion Friday morning was arrested after he crashed his vehicle just across the Clayton County line on Ga. Highway 314, sheriff’s deputies said.

The original incident was reported near the Target at the Pavilion and a witness said the suspect left the area in a green car, police said.

A deputy happened to be nearby on Hwy. 314 when the call went out and got behind the vehicle, starting a pursuit in the northbound lanes, said sheriff’s Lt. Belinda McCastle.

As the deputy and suspect approached the intersection of highways 314 and 138, the deputy halted the chase due to congested traffic but the suspect kept going, crashing into three vehicles, McCastle said.

The suspect and a juvenile in the car were taken into custody and charges are pending, McCastle said. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Gabriel Joel Wheeler, McCastle said.

No details were immediately available on the charges that will be filed on Wheeler and possibly the juvenile. It is anticipated that Fayetteville police will have some charges from the original incident, Fayette County sheriffs will have additional charges from the pursuit and perhaps Clayton County police will have some charges resulting from the crash.

Good teamwork between the PD and the SO. The only way to stop these idiots is for us to keep working together. Not without a fight Clayton.
