The Fayette County NAACP in collaboration with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Fayette County Board of Education will host the Fifth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Parade January 19.

The Fayette County NAACP cordially invites all local churches, businesses, civic organizations and citizens to enter floats, automobiles and/or marching units to participate in the parade.

“We are looking forward to including the entire community as we celebrate the belief of Dr. King and the diversity in Fayette County,” said Rev. Edward Johnson, chair of the annual parade planning committee.

The parade will line up at the Fayette County High School parking lot and begins at 11 a.m. Immediately following the parade, a brief program will be held at F.A. Sam’s auditorium to observe the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and showcase the talent of Fayette County Youth. The program will feature keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Francys Johnson, Southeast Regional Director of the NAACP. Johnson is a local minister, educator and attorney.

This is the seventh year that a public program in recognition of Dr. King’s birthday has been held in Fayette County.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

Please call 770-460-9934 for more information and to register your organization to participate in the parade.

How it used to be

-----------------------------------------------------------
“...the term “democrat” originated as an epithet and referred to ‘one who panders to the crude and mindless whims of the masses.’”
